Abstract

The issues of the ethnic diversity of the Malaysian way of life, have been explored in scholarship on Fernando’s selection of Malaysian Short Stories (2006), consisting of six fictional narratives on life in pre-independence Malaya namely “Nannan and A Certain Cry” by Cynthia Anthony, “Ratnamuni” by K.S. Maniam, “Pasang” by Pretam Kaur, “The Third Child” by K.S. Maniam, and “Birthday” by M. Shanmugalingam, through the lens of post-colonialism. The stories have been described as an exceptional compilation due to the fact that Fernando is able to assemble stories written by authors from different ethnic backgrounds and cultures other than their own but we argue in this paper that the short stories do not contain intercultural sensitivity as they depict more ethnocentric orientations. We define ethnocentric experiences here as interculturally-sensitive elements which trigger a series of complex emotions in avoiding cultural differences either by denying their existence, raising defences against them, or by minimising their importance. Using the understanding of ethnocentrism as conceptualised by Milton J. Bennet (2013) as part of his Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity, we attempt to examine the type of ethnocentric experiences depicted by the authors through selected characters in two out of the six short stories. Our findings demonstrate that the three types of ethnocentric experiences, denial, defense and minimisation of cultural differences, are indeed found embedded in the unconscious minds of the authors through their portrayals of selected characters, which in turn provide a platform of cultural fertilisation in Malaysian pluralistic society.

Abstract

Questioning is an essential strategy for effective communication. This study examined questioning techniques used by students and the Critical thinking processes involved in questioning. There was also an attempt to find out the differences between the patterns of using questions between the two groups. Data were sourced from student learning group through audio and video taping the sessions and were analyzed using types of questioning. Findings indicated that students asked higher order in level questions such as open - ended, interpretive, and evaluative, inquiry, inferential, and synthesis, while most students raised lower cognitive questions including facts, closed, direct, recall, and knowledge type questions. It is suggested that using higher level questioning technique, more frequently used by teacher as more competent speakers in comparison to students, can foster learning and students are required to attend higher levels of questioning techniques to enhance their speculative, inferential and evaluative thinking ability

Cultural diversity that includes ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity is a gift and grace from God Almighty that must be managed and well maintained by all elements of the nation. Caring for diversity and harmonization in multicultural society in the era of information technology or globalization is the biggest challenge of the day. The goal is to maintain harmony and unity in the midst of a multicultural society. In such conditions the ability and understanding of the language politeness play an important role in maintaining the harmonization of multicultural society. Based on that, this article aims to reveal that the problems that can threaten the unity and integrity of this republic are not only derived from differences of certain political and ideological attitudes, but may also originate and begin from languages impoliteness to hate speech. Applying language politeness theory proposed by Pranowo (2009) which extracted values embedded the local wisdom of the Indonesian is considered capable in anticipating hate speech actions. Thus harmonization in multicultural society in Indonesia can be well maintained.

Abstract

As a contemporary American female writer, a devout Christian, Marilynne Robinson gets her religious thoughts fully manifested in her Gilead. The novel is actually a home epistle that an aged and ailing father Ames passes to his 7-year-old innocent son, which narrates the three priesthood generations’ life changes from the Civil War to 1956 by making use of Ames’s first-person narration. However, the outsider John Ames Boughton (Jack) has been subject to diverse academic interest, which proves that he dominates an important textual place. This research makes the priest Ames’s baptism for prodigal Jack as an entry point. Ames has baptized Jack and has to reluctantly confer the name “John Ames” to Jack under the request of his bosom friend Boughton. Due to Ames’s mixed feelings (jealousy) in addition to Jack’s own diverse prodigality, Ames does not want to accept Jack at all. With the focus on the tiny difference between the religious ritual baptism and the true meaning of baptism in the novel, this research aims to put forward that the priest Ames has dilemma in conveying the Bible doctrine “love your neighbors”. However, at the end of novel, after seeing the unacceptable prodigal’s love and responsibility toward his old father, colored wife and interracial son, Ames starts to introspect his inappropriate attitude toward Jack. Under the guidance of the divine epiphany, Ames is willing to accept Jack and to give Jack the spiritual consolation. By analyzing Ames’s inner conflicts between his own “covetise” and the divine epiphany—the developmental process of Ames’s acceptance of unacceptable prodigal godson, this paper hopes to argue that the last blessing Ames gives to Jack reveals that Ames’s divine epiphany overwhelms his human nature—covetise which enables him to accept even to love the unacceptable people or unpleasant things in life so as to make faith and spiritual pursuit truly become a part of contemporary life.
