Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the improvement of the students’ ability in reading the report text by using the trading place strategy.  The research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (Arikunto, 2006). The subject of this study was the nineth grade students in MTs S. AL-Husna, Medan, in academic year 2016/2017. The class consisted of 30 students. The data were taken from the students’ score, observation sheet, diary notes and documentation. Based on the reading tests, the students’ score kept improvement in every test: from pre-test to post test of cycle I and post test of cycle II. The improvement can also be proved by the result of observation sheet and diary notes. Therefore, It was found that teaching reading the report text by implementing the trading place strategy could improve the students’ ability in reading comprehension of the report text.

Abstract

This article analyzes the strategy for language politeness of Dyah Galih Agung Senior and Junior High School students, Deli Serdang District, which is realized through the use of speech acts. Every speaker should have knowledge on language politeness. Pragmatically speaking, language politeness is related and realized in speech acts. Speakers should understand speech contexts of their utterance and meanings contained in it. Some utterances may hurt the listeners but with choosing and using proper dictions and applying politeness, it will not hurt the listeners. The data collected using observation and conversation method (Sudaryanto, 2017) and then analyzed using Searle’s speech act theory (1979) and Leech’s politeness principles (2014). The findings show that the students in Dyah Galih Agung Senior and Junior High School, Deli Serdang District, use assertive, directive, commissive, and expressive speech act. Regarding the strategy for language politeness, the students use direct speech act more than indirect one which is influenced by the close social relationship among them. The findings also show that the application of Leech’s politeness strategy (2014) is able to improve the students’ language politeness ability.

Abstract

This research focuses on social values reflected in Tere Liye’s novel entitled Hujan. The research is aimed at revealing the kinds of social values in the novel. Soekanto (1982) states that social value is a concept in a man in a society about what is considered good and bad, beautiful or not and right or wrong.  In this reserach, the theory of social values is proposed by Djamaris (1993) who claims that social values can be divided into ten kinds namely Affection, Forgiveness, Obedience, Courtesy, Deliberation, Mutual Cooperation, Sympathy and Empathy, Wisdom, Respecting Others, and  Responsibility The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative and structural objective approach developed by Semi (1985). The research result shows that seven kinds of social values are found in the novel: Love, Forgiveness, Obedience, Mutual Cooperation,  Wisdom, Respecting Others, and  Responsibility. However, the most dominant social value found in the novel is affection; which is reflected mainly from parents and friends.

Abstract

Karonese mengket rumah mbaru tradition is a ceremony to thank God and to share happiness to the relative and friends because one manages to build his own house. Karonese has a community kinship system named merga si lima, rakut si telu, perkadekaden sisiwah tambah sada. All of them have different functions in mengket rumah mbaru tradition. There is one part of mengket rumah mbaru ceremony that all of them give some kind speech to the host. This research try to find out interpersonal metafunction meaning in the mengket rumah mbaru traditionis. This research employs descriptive qualitative to analyze interpersonal meaning performed in the ceremony by studying the utterances by anak beru, kalimbubu and senina during in one part of the ceremony. The researcher directly involves in this ceremony to observe all the data.  Theory of interpersonal meaning proposed by M.A.K Halliday is applied to analyze and classify the mood auxiliary, personal pronoun in pronoun system. The finding informed that mood positive declarative appears 88,4%. Imperative appear 10.1 %, negative declarative 0%. There are 25 modal verbal found in the ceremony, “will 52% must 16%, can 32% 0%. Personal pronoun “we” 60%, you 24, it =9, she3%, he 4%. Tenses shift future 60%, present tense 40%, and past 10%.

Abstract

Psychology takes the important role in literature, because the composition of literary work in its story could not beapart from the psychological aspect. Psyche structure is one of the way to analyze the character. The writers applied personality theory from Sigmund Freud that consists of three structures namely the Id, Ego and Superego, These three parts work together to create a complete personality to analyze the main character in “something the lord made” movie that was released in 2004. This movie tells about first doctor who handle “baby syndrome” case. The aim of the research is to find out the psyche structure of Vivian by using theory of Sigmund Freud. The data was obtained from two sources that are primary data which is taken from the movie script directly and secondary dara which is taken from books and journals that supported this research. It was conduct by using qualitative research. Based on the data analysis, the writers found that there was 11 data which related to psyche structure of Vivian Thomas. The analysis of research result shows that psyche structure is used in Something the Lord Made movie.

Abstract

This research is concerned with the  analysis of figurative language portrayed in Rihanna’s selected songs. Figurative language is a kind of literature that emphasize in connotation meaning than literary one. It is language that uses word or expression with a different meaning than literal interpretation. It can be found in literature and poetry where the writing appeals to the senses. It can do this by giving a word with a specific meaning, by comparing two things in such a way that it finds the comparison interesting or by using words that have unusual constructions or sounds.The objectives of the study are to identify the types of figurative language and to state how the figurative language is in Rihanna’s selected songs. Figurative language theory applied in this paper is proposed by Perrine (1969) stating that figurative languages are another way of adding extra dimension to language. The findings show that there are significant figurative language in Rihana’s selected songs: Hyperbole, Personification, Simile, Metaphor, Symbol, Repetition, Imagery, Alliteration, Metonymy, and Assonance.

Abstract

Dirty words are considered as a part of language phenomenon. They have their own forms and categories. This research discusses the Japanese dirty words which is contained in Miki Yoshikawa’s Yanki-kun to Megane-chan comic. it is aimed to describe lexical form in Miki Yoshikawa’s Yanki-kun to Megane-chan comic. This research utilizes descriptive qualitative method. The data research is obtained dirty words in Comic Yanki-kun to Megane-chan comic volume 1. In analyzing the data, theory of Fargo (2007) and Jay (1992) are used to describe lexical form of dirty words. The result of this research reveals that those are five categories out of ten found. There are 9,5% of obscenity, 40% of slang, 3% crusing, 27% of epithets, and 20,5% of scatology. This shows that slang and Epithets are the most used in Miki Yoshikawa’s Yanki-kun to Megane-chan volume 1 comic.

Abstract

In understanding the women’s culture, historians see and distinguish various aspects of identity, roles, relationships, attitudes and pictures of women's lives formed in the culture of society in general. Female writers also express and present the women’s culture in their works. This study discusses how the women’s culture is represented in a novel written by a woman. A work that is written with attention to the cultural elements of women that presents women's lives through experience and narration. The object analyzed in this study is Oka Rusmini's novel entitled "Kenanga" which tells the women’s lives with Balinese cultural background. Oka Rusmini, the author is also a Balinese woman. The novel is analyzed by using the approach of Subjectivity (Spivak,1994) and Elaine Showalter cultural model (Showalter,1982) especially women's writing and women's culture model. This study shows that women authors represent experiences and women's issues in their works. Women authors also write down their responses and perspectives on the patriarchal culture that surrounds their lives with a Balinese cultural setting. Oka Rusmini also conveys resistance of social and cultural constructions which make women become subordinate through the attitude and life of the characters in her novel.

Abstract

Reading and writing have been seen as solitary, boring and individualized among ESL learners. Hence, teaching and learning critical reading and creative writing, can pose even a challenge to educators and learners of a second language, at all levels. The challenge is even greater in the digital era where students would rather spend time online on gadgets than flipping pages of magazines. As a receptive skill, reading a textbook outside the classroom would be next to impossible. This paper shares how second language educators can use an authentic material like Reader’s Digest magazines to propagate fun, engaging and outdoor critical reading and creative writing activities. It incorporates various elements such as team building, collaborative learning and problem-based learning while engaging students to learn vocabulary, sentence construction and paragraph writing in an outdoor setting.

Abstract

Brochure as a media in promoting a product has developed by the growing of technology in this multimedia era. The inovation in brochure in fact is needed to support a success marketing. The images and words which are showed in the brochure should be present in meaningful and creative ways. It will catch the interest and raise the curiosity of the customers. Seeing the situation, studying the popular product by the brochure delivered is very important. “Hafiz and Hafizah Talking Doll” is one of the popular product in this global era. It is a kind of educative toy that is contained of many features as its superiority . This product has caught many customer and we can find so many online brochures in the internet. Therefore, analyzing the brochure of “Hafiz and Hafizah Talking Doll” is very essential. Multimodal Discourse Analysis is applied in this research to get the understanding of the brochure.
