Abstract

There are barriers in teaching and learning foreign language but there are always ways in overcoming the problems. One of the most challenging tasks faced by (English as a Foreign Language)  EFL teachers is how to elicit the students’ interest so that they will be more motivated to learn and successfully develop their English proficiency. Educational psychology theories developed by Russian psychologist, Lev Vygotsky have been recognized as having great contribution to language education and teacher training. Education experts also insisted that in order to motivate the students, English which is presented in EFL classrooms should be authentic in order to immerse students into the real usage of English communication. This article discusses Vygotsky’s sociocultural approach and the authentic materials used in the classroom to develop students’ English proficiency.

Abstract

As the most important school level among the others, elementary school has become the main concern of societies since it serves as the basis for the foundation of education for the children. To achieve qualified teaching learning process in this level of education, it must be supported by qualified teachers too. If the teachers don’t have professionalism, they may contribute to the students’ misfortune in the future. However, nowadays in reality, the quality of public elementary school is still being questioned. There are two factors influencing this phenomena (1) insufficient  professionalism of the teacher, and (2) low monitoring. In this context, as the certified civil servant teacher in elementary school, teachers should improve their professionalism as mandated  by Teacher Law.

Abstract

The study is an attempt to estimate the intra-rater reliability of students’ self-assessment of their writing performances and to find out whether rater training improves the reliability. The rater training used is adapted from the model developed by Herman, Aschbacher and Winters(1992). This quantitative study which employed equivalent time-samples design has two variables; they were the reliability coefficient of students’ self-assessment and the rater training. The data were collected by asking 25 students conducting self-assessment on their four writing tasks and analyzed using Spearman coefficient correlation. It was found that the rs were 0.798, 0.772, 0.699 and 0.637; it showed that the consistency within students in assessing their own writing was moderately high. However, the rs of the intra-rater reliability of the self-assessment after the treatments is not higher than that of other experience being available in the absence of the treatment. It is concluded that rater training has not been able to improve the intra-rater reliability.

Abstract

Social changes and development of technology force EFL teachers’ struggle to utilize potentially useful technology and promote learner autonomy. Edmodo as a highly versatile micro blogging platform is needed to develop learner autonomy in virtual learning environments. Keeping this need in mind, this paper reports on the attempt to develop learner autonomy online of 65 EFL learners in the fifth semester of English Department in STAIN Ponorogo through Edmodo. Data were collected through observations and the analyses of the observations light on the overall experience of learning with Edmodo especially through the lens of learner autonomy. The results showed that Edmodo afforded students the opportunity to take responsibility for their own learning and involve them in taking ownership (partial or total) of many learning processes. However, lack of access to internet and the ambiguous task instruction also contributed to a limited level of social interaction in virtual learning environments. Finally, it can be concluded that well-designed tasks and accessibility to internet are essential to maximize the potentials of Edmodo for learner autonomy.

Abstract

This paper aims to portray the implementation of Genre based Approach (henceforth GBA) in English Language Teaching context in Indonesia. The emphasize of the paper is on GBA as a new concept when it is first introduced as a new curriculum  in Indonesian education system and how it gives impact to Indonesian curriculum development. GBA, which is highly influenced by Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics highlights the process of learning as opposed to the result of learning. Thus, the description on GBA implementation is expected to give different perspective in ELT in Indonesia.

Abstract

In business and human resource management, mentoring has been acknowledged as an effective way to develop career and achievement. This may be true to English teaching. Mentoring can be used as an alternative strategy to help students improve their language proficiency.   English Department of IAIN Tulungagung possesses unique characteristic since it is a non-Islamic study which is run by an Islamic institute. Its unique characteristic lies on the number of the Islamic content courses, of which proportion is much bigger comparing to the same kinds of department which is run by non-Islamic universities. This causes to the less credit of English skill and content courses offered to the students. To meet the students’ need of a good proficiency at English skills, especially speaking, any effort must be conducted. One of the proposed alternatives is conducting a peer mentoring. This article proposes and discusses a model of peer mentoring program to improve the English students’ speaking ability. The peer mentoring model is selected since it gives fruitful benefits to the junior students as the mentees, the senior students as the mentors, and the faculty members or the English department lecturers as the supervisors.

Abstract

This paper aims to discuss Indonesian Qualification Frameworks (IQFs) holistically. Today, we are being exposed to the discussions on IQFs through many socialization programs and government publications. As education practitioners, we have to be familiar with universal concepts of National Qualifications Framework (NQF) which most pioneers of NQF hold. It is not enough only having that, moreover, this paper presents other essential points about NQF and, specifically for Indonesian context, those are the potential benefits, the reasons of formulating IQFs, NQFs across countries, and further issues. I realize that this paper has not successfully contextualized into ELT as IQFs has recently been developed. However, this paper is significant engagement to IQFs for successful implementation.

Abstract

Curriculum development as the guide to instructional implementation should be able to ‘bridge the gaps’ of the needs among the parties in teaching learning process. Needs analysis is then a crucial step in curriculum development. It includes the needs of the intitution, the target needs, and for the most, the learners’ needs. Indonesian curriculum may change as the result of the current situation or policy, yet the concern remain the same, that is to identify needs and accomodate those needs. Introduction on curriculum development, a brief review on ESP, discussion on needs analysis, and reflection of the curriculum development in Indonesia related to needs analysis would be delivered in this article.

Abstract

This paper overviews the use of portfolios as  potential “source” in publishing journal applied in Academic Writing course. The first part presents the idea behind the use the students’ Academic Writing’s portfolio in preparing the students’ publication. The students work with their portfolio project, meanwhile the teacher takes part as the editor who asses and evaluate the students’ best portfolio. The second part, the project is initiated by stating the objective of the project where the  students are to produce one good article at the end of the Academic Writing course as the final product. Both teacher and the students are  engaged that the main purpose of the course is to produce an academic article, therefore during the teaching and learning  process,   the students  are  given an intense and comprehensive discussion  about academic writing as the core subject as well as the practicing and revising the students’ work as the feedback. The students practice on quoting,  paraphrasing, referencing, and summarizing in their writing. Finally, the teacher revises the students’work in every meeting until the final draft. An important aspect  to do is also dealing with ISBN (International standard book number) procedures as one of requirement in publishing a book. Unfortunately, the recent online procedure of ISBN was very helpful which enables the teacher to publish the edited students’ portfolio in to a book.
