Abstract

Genetics is a biology topic that applies several mathematics principles. It causes numeracy skills in genetics to be important for students. Therefore, a good mastery of numeracy skills could help students to solve genetics problems and achieve genetics competencies. Based on this statement, this study was conducted to analyze the numeracy skills of class XII based on the Minimum Competency Assessment (Asesmen Kompetensi Minimum/AKM). Fifty-four students were involved as research participants. Furthermore, 30 questions were used in this study. The result showed that the numeracy skills of class XII were still in the low category due to the lack of experience in solving AKM-type questions, learning experience, mathematics ability, mastery of genetics concepts, and students' perceptions of genetics. The low students’ performance on numeracy skills should be considered especially by an education provider to adjust the learning implementation that can improve students’ numeracy skills in genetics.

Abstract

This study explores the effect of mini research project learning on high school students critical thinking skills in household waste management activities. To achieve this goal, this study used a pre-experiment method with one group pre-test post-test design. Data were taken from first-grade students in one of the senior high schools in Bandung as research subjects for the experimental class without a control class. The test instrument (essay) adapted from Facione (2011) was used to measure students' critical thinking skills. The results showed that there was an increase in students' critical thinking skills after learning the mini research project with an average N-gain score of 0.55 (medium). The criteria for critical thinking skills had also changed from the average critical thinking score achievement which was very low (not manifested) to high (strong) which was seen based on the results of the initial and final tests.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to identify the effect of a virtual laboratory application on the student results in the environmental changes topic at SMAN 16 Bandung. A virtual laboratory is an activity of learning with the use of software as a simulator containing all necessary equipment in preparation, tools, working step demonstration, and practicum observation. During the teaching and learning process, the teacher guided the students to understand the concept of learning, especially in the concept of environmental changes topic (pollution and climate changes). The students were directed to analyze and identify the problem of the topic itself, so they would develop the ability to think critically and solve the problems. The method used in this research was pre-experimental with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample in the research consisted of 34 students in one class experiment. Instruments used in this research consisted of 30 multiple choices questions with six options and a questionnaire about the attitude cases to the learning process. Supported research results showed that there was an effective effect in the application of virtual laboratory, with an N-gain value of 0.72 with the category of high effect. The average learning mastery of students after implementing a virtual laboratory was 88%. Learning outcomes about students' attitudes when learning using virtual laboratory showed a very good category with an average of 81%, with the highest attitude on indicators of collaboration and critical thinking.

Abstract

Low creative thinking skills, the approach used in learning has not facilitated students to understand problems and express many ideas. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Google Classroom-assisted STEM approach on creative thinking skills. This study used a quantitative research type with Quasi-Experimental Design. The population in this study were all students of class VIII SMP Negeri 20 Bandar Lampung, with a sampling technique that is cluster random sampling obtained Class G as the experimental class and Class H as the control class. The data collection technique used a test instrument in the form of an essay test to measure students' creative thinking skills. Hypothesis testing was using the Independent Sample T-test which was preceded by a pre-requisite test for normality and homogeneity of the data. The results of the t-test hypothesis test obtained a significance of 0.00 0.05, meaning that H0 is rejected so that it can be concluded that the STEM approach assisted by Google Classroom has an effect on students' creative thinking, with the acquisition of each indicator: 79.7% originality indicator, 80,7% flexibility,82% elaboration, and 81.2% fluency. This increase can be seen from the impact on students that becoming more enthusiastic by motivating each other among friends through creative thinking so that they are able to make decisions and solve problems well.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of STEM learning on students' numeracy skills. STEM learning was carried out through the activity of making a UV sterilizer prototype in one class with six groups in it. Data collection was carried out before, during, and after learning. The instruments used were written tests of numeracy skills, observation sheets, and students’ questionnaires response. The effect of learning was tested through paired sample t-test and N-gain. Data collection was carried out in one class of XI IPA at Senior High School in Bandung with 21 participating students. The results showed that STEM learning had an effect on numeracy skills, with significant results (t (21) = -5.87, p = 0.00), and moderate increase (N-gain = 0.46).

Abstract

The quality of education must always be improved to get maximum results. One way to improve it is by developing learning media. Based on the results of field observations in this study at MA Raudlatus Shibyan, the use of learning media was still not optimal. For this reason, researchers developed an Interactive E-module product containing Ecology topic in Biology Learning as a supplement to learning. An interactive e-module is an electronic module that contains materials, videos, audio, animations, quizzes, and evaluations, which allow students to study independently. This descriptive research consists of three main stages, include Planning, Project, Evaluation (PPE). The interactive e-module developed was compiled using the Canva web, then the file was saved as a PDF, after which editing was continued using the Flip PDF Professional application. The product was then validated by a material expert and got a percentage score of 98.12% in the "Very Feasible" category. Validation by media experts got a score of 93.25% in the "Very Decent" category. After going through validation and revision according to the suggestions, the product was tested on Biology teachers and students of class X science. The score from the teacher's assessment is 79.76% in the "Eligible" category. Assessment from students got a score of 80% in the "Eligible" category. Based on the results obtained from product validation and testing, the interactive E-module developed by the researcher was feasible to be used in the field in terms of valid and practical feasibility.

Abstract

Critical thinking skill is one of the higher-order thinking skills which has to be mastered by students. However, many studies showed that students' critical thinking skills are still relatively low. So, it is necessary to carry out learning activities that can increase critical thinking skills, one of that is through the application of learning models. The purpose of this study was to find out the types of biology learning model that can improve the critical thinking skills of class X students, the biology learning model that was most recommended to improve the biological critical thinking skills of class X students in terms of effect size value, and biology learning model that was most recommended to improve students' critical thinking skills in each material content of class X in terms of the effect size value. The type of research used was quantitative research with the research method used in the form of meta-analysis. The results of the study revealed that there were 17 types of learning models that were proven to be able to improve the biological critical thinking skills of class X students. The guided discovery learning model based on e-learning was proven to have the highest effect size value of 1,07. The learning model which was recommended to improve the critical thinking skills based on material includes: problem-based learning for biodiversity material, think pair share (TPS) cooperative model for environmental pollution material, problem-based learning combined with student facilitator and explaining for fungi, and guided discovery and e-learning based learning for ecosystem materials.
