Abstract

  This study aimed to investigate the effect of anonymous peer assessment on students’ writing ability. Quantitative approach was used in this study. Post-test only control group design was the design used in this experimental study. The post-test only control group design was designed to discover the purpose of this study which was to investigate the significant effect on writing ability between students who obtain feedback from anonymous peer assessment and students who obtain feedback from conventional assessment. The study was conducted at SMK PGRI 1 Singaraja. The eleventh grade students in Academic Year 2017/2018 were chosen as the population. The samples were 44 students from XI AP and XI UPW. The instruments used in this study were lesson plan, anonymous peer checklist, writing scoring rubric, and writing test. Writing scoring rubric and writing test were used to obtain the data through post-test while lesson plan and anonymous peer assessment were used during the treatment. The data then was analyzed by using SPSS 16. The results of the analysis show that (1) the mean score of the experimental group was 77.55 while the mean score of the control group was 68.77. (2) The t-observe was 3.892 and it exceeded the t-critical value which was 2.018. Therefore, based on the aforementioned results, it can be concluded that there was a significant difference on writing ability between the eleventh grade students who obtained feedback from anonymous peer assessment and those who obtained feedback from conventional assessment at SMK PGRI 1 Singaraja in academic year 2017/2018.

Abstract

This present study aimed at finding out the types of communication strategies used by the English teacher to communicate with D/HH students during teaching and learning process in the classroom, the teacher’s reason used those communication strategies and whether the teacher communicate with each student the same ways or not. This present study was a case study with qualitative approach. The subject of this study was an English teacher of Senior High School who teach D/HH students in SLB Negeri 1 Gianyar. The data was collected by using observation sheet, interview guide, and audio-video recorded. Then, the data was analyzed descriptively by using three steps, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification. The results of the study show that there are 7 types of communication strategies used by the English teacher to communicate with D/HH students, namely: lips or speech reading, sign language, cued speech, total communication, conceptual language, visual media, and literal translation. The main reason why the English teacher used those communication strategies was in order to ease him to communicate with D/HH students and help him in explaining the material toward D/HH students. Then, it was found that the English teacher used different communication strategies to communicate with each student. Based on the finding above, the teacher used all types of communication strategies in every class and supported by logical reasons.

Abstract

The aim of communicative language teaching is enable learners to communicate in the target language. A learner is sued to perform the micro and macro components in each utterance produced. Consequently, students need to know the linguistics forms, meanings and functions of that target language. They need to know that many different forms can be used to perform a function and also that single form can often serve a variety of functions. Students must be able to choose from among these the most appropriate form, given the social context and manage the process of negotiating meaning with their interlocutors. However, knowing learner’s English learning motivation is an urgent variable to be considered in creating conducive atmosphere classroom which will raise the learners to do more toward speaking achievement. The aim of this study is to know and describe the English learning motivation affecting students’ speaking ability of 48 students of XI grade of science program at catholic senior of Saint Ignasius Loyola Labuan Bajo, West Flores, Indonesia. Correlation design with purposive procedure applied in this research. Data were collected through questionnaire, interview, and students’ speaking document. Result shows that motivation is significantly affecting students’ speaking ability.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the creative thinking abilities of students in science lessons, describe the obstacles faced by teachers in improving the thinking skills of fourth grade in elementary school No. 2 Pemaron Buleleng and describe the efforts of teachers in improving the thinking skills of fourth grade in elementary school No. 2 Pemaron Buleleng. This type of research is qualitative descriptive. The subjects were students of class IV and science teachers, while the object of this study is the ability to think creatively IPA on students. Results of this study are as much as 46.45% of students scored below average including medium category. Results of the indicator analysis shows that original thinking is an indicator with the highest percentage of the total percentage of 84.17% of the indicators of current thinking, thinking elaborative and indicators to think flexibly. Constraints faced in the ability to think creatively is the interest of students is still low, inadequate facilities, lack of utilization of the environment as a source of learning, learning methods that are less attractive and less parental supervision of their childrens learning activities. Efforts are being made to improve the ability to think creatively IPA, among others, teachers use a more varied learning methods and implement learning activities more interesting and fun as more invites students to conduct experiments in the classroom or outside the classroom.

Abstract

This present study was a research and development (R&D) which concerned in; identifying the kinds of vocabulary were appropriate to be developed as Guessing Game (GG) for teaching vocabulary to the fifth grade of students of SD Negeri 5 Kubutambahan, analyzing the quality of the developed Guessing Game (GG) for teaching vocabulary to the fifth grade of students of SD Negeri 5 Kubutambahan. This study followed the R&D design proposed by Dick and Carey (2005). This design involves: need analysis, instructional analysis, learner and learning environment, performance objectives, assessment rubric, story board, design and develop, formative evaluation, revision and final product. The subjects of the study were students of fifth grade and the teacher of SD Negeri 5 Kubutambahan. the data were collected through observation, questionnaire, interview, document review and expert judgment. The result of the study shows that: (1) there were four guessing games have been developed with four different themes which were aimed to be used as a media for teaching vocabulary to the first semester of 5th grade students. Those guessing game were designed based on the criteria of English syllabus of school based curriculum for the first semester of 5th grade students and also based on criteria of educational app by Lee & Cherner (2015). The final of the guessing game were presented into CD and a manual guide book for teacher. (2) the overall quality of the developed guessing game from the judgment of experts was categorized as excellent (2.73).

Abstract

This design and development research aimed at designing and developing a culture-based English e-media to support the implementation of curriculum 2013 for the first semester of grade VII of junior high schools in Buleleng sub-district. This research focused on developing e-media that is integrated with Balinese culture. The object of this research was culture- based English e-media that was developed by using Adobe Flash CS6 program. The source of data was taken from the need analysis conducted by Dewi and Batan (2015), related literatures on developing the e-media, and the result of expert judgement. The data were analysed descriptively both qualitatively and quantitatively. This research was designed based on the adaptation of puffers et al.’s model (2007) that consisted of six phases namely: (1) identifying the problem, (2) describing the objective, (3) designing and developing the product, (4) testing the product by using expert judgement, (5) evaluating the testing result, and (6) communicating the testing result. The result of experts’ judgement score showed that the total mean score 3.8 which means the e-media had a good quality and it can be used in teaching and learning English for the first semester of grade VII of junior high schools in Buleleng.

Abstract

This study aimed at: (1) identifying e-learning based English materials which were needed by the tenth grade students of Light Vehicle Department at SMK N Bali Mandara; (2) identifying the design of the e-learning based English materials for the tenth grade students of Light Vehicle Department at SMK N Bali Mandara; (3) measuring the quality of the e-learning based English materials for the tenth grade students of Light Vehicle Department at SMK N Bali Mandara. This study applied Research and Development designed by Lee and Owens (2004). The data of the study were collected through document analysis, questionnaire, and expert judge. The results of the data from the document analysis and questionnaire were analyzed descriptively; the data from expert judge was analyzed quantitatively by using a formula proposed by Candiasa (2010). The result of the study showed that the tenth grade students of Light vehicle Department at SMK N Bali Mandara were still taught using general English and the students needed English materials which were developed in accordance with their expertise program. Thus, this study developed four topics based on the students’ expertise, namely: 1) Describing Hand Tools; 2) Signs at the Workplace; 3) Stating Capabilities in Repairing Car; and 4) Inviting Customer. Each topic was designed using Moodle version 3.3.x and focused on improving the students’ four language skills. Based on the result of expert judgment, the mean score from both judges was 92 and was categorized as good materials.

Abstract

This study aimed at describing types and implementation of reinforcement strategies in motivating EFL students at KG B Class in Bali Kiddy School. This research was conducted in the second semester in the academic year of 2016/2017. The subjects of the research were a teacher and 22 students aged 5-7 years old. The data collected by two methods: observation and interview. It was found that Bali Kiddy used 5 types of reinforcement strategies, namely verbal reinforcement, gestural, contact, activity and token reinforcement. Each of these types consists of positive and negative reinforcement. For positive reinforcement Bali Kiddy used “good, very good, very good job, good job, excellent, thats good, wow, strong child, smile, nodding head, thumbs up, clap hands, hugging the student, stroking the student back, rubbing their head, outdoor playing, writing student name on board, studying on floor with teacher, more time for playing, appointed as leader of a group, storytelling, break time at computer room, sticker and write comment on student book”. For the negative reinforcements were "sssstt, tetot, forefinger in front of mouth, point the student and crossed hand in front of chest”. 5 ways of implementation were also found in study. They are: first, reinforcement was given with warmth and enthusiasm, second, negative reinforcement was avoided, third, reinforcement was emphasized on meaningfulness, fourth, reinforcement was given to both group and individual and fifth, reinforcement was given with variation in types and purposes.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating (1) types of ICT tools implemented in teaching and learning process (2) English teacher’ planning of the use of ICT tools in lesson planning (3) procedures implemented in teaching English using the ICT tools (4) the problems faced by English teachers who used ICT tools in teaching and learning process at SMA Negeri 2 Semarapura when using ICT tools in teaching and learning process. This study was descriptive qualitative research involving three English teachers of SMA Negeri 2 Semarapura. The instruments used for data collection were researcher, questionnaire, interview guide, teachers’ lesson plan, observation sheet, and recorder. The methods of data collection were survey, interview, lesson plan analysis, observation, and recording. The result of the study showed that English teachers of SMA Negeri 2 Semarapura had already implemented ICT tools in teaching and learning process. Types of ICT tools used were laptop, LCD projector, speaker, video, Power Point, internet, and e-learning namely Quipper School. Before implementing those types of ICT tools, teachers planned ICT tools in the lesson planning. The use of ICT tools were planned explicitely in teaching media and tools as well as learning resources, while implicitely in steps of teaching and learning activity. In implementing ICT tools, the teachers had their own procedures which depended on types of ICT tools used and topic taught. Teachers encountered four main problems namely infrastructural problems, technical problems, problem of time, and lack of teachers’ competence in using ICT tools.

Abstract

This study aims to (1) analyzing the types of politeness strategies used by teachers and students of Class X in Ilmu Budaya dan Bahasa (IBB) in Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 1 Sukasada during English classroom interaction; (2) analyzing the factors that influence the choice of politeness strategies. This study was designed as a qualitative descriptive study. The data that has been obtained was analyzed based on the theory of politeness Brown and Levinsons strategy. The results of this study indicated that (1) there were three types of Brown and Levinson politeness strategies used by teachers and students namely bald on record, positive politeness, and negative politeness; (2) as for the factors that influencing the choice of politeness strategies are payoffs: as a prior consideration, circumstances: social variables, and integration of the assessment of payoffs and the weight of the risk of choosing politeness strategies.
