Abstract

The present work aims to investigate 1) the inequality and income structure of maize farmers’ households; and 2) the contribution of maize farming to the household income of the farmer. Furthermore, this research was conducted in Gorontalo Regency for four months. It relied on the survey method, in which the data were collected from questionnaires and interviews. The data consisted of primary data from 132 maize farmers randomly selected from each area using the proportional allocation method. All data were analyzed using the quantitative descriptive method, Gini coefficient, and z-test for proportions. According to the results, moderate inequality was caused if the household income was from maize farming and other farming. The inequality would be categorized high if the non-farming income was included in the calculation. Based on the income structure, this inequality was likely to occur since the non-farming income contributed significantly to the percentage of the total income of high-income farmers. Maize farming income was significant to the farmers’ household income, meaning that farmers relied on maize farming as their primary income source.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the current state of ex-transmigration villages and regional policy makers' perceptions regarding transmigration's existence and sustainability. The study was conducted in Jambi Province. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. Primary data collection was carried out through Focus Group Discussions (FGD) with policymakers at the provincial and district levels. According to the study’s results, the implementation of the transmigration program in addition to showing various successes also resulted in a number of negative excesses for the destination areas. These negative excesses are mainly related to the disparity between the transmigration area and its surrounding area, the low leverage of the transmigration area on the surrounding area, and the potential emergence of poverty in the transmigration area. Related to this, future revitalization of the transmigration program must focus on the development of transmigration areas that are functionally related to the surrounding area, based on the expertise required by the local area, and increasing the role of the community and private sector in the diversification transmigrant business patterns.

This research aimed 1) to describe the characteristics of grape farmers, 2) to show the perspective of grapes farmer, and 3) to identify problems and expectations in carrying out grape vines cultivation in South Tangerang City. Data collected through the interview, observation and sharing questionnaires. The number of samples was determined proportionally to 68 grape farmers, who are members of the grape community in South Tangerang City (KAT). The results showed that grape farmers tended to be knowledgeable and educated, specified by productive age (20-40 years old) with less experiences in grape cultivation. Based on the perspective analysis, farmers were attracted to grape farming not because of the influence of farm-families background, but because of hobbies and self interest in grapes cultivation. Farmers considered that agriculture was a noble and a matter of pride. The most common problems facing grape farmers were the insufficient land, inadequate agricultural funding base, and formulating the ideal growing media. The results of the expectation analysis proved that training program was the most desired assistance for farmers, especially effort to increase grape productivity.
