Abstract

Tourism is an important component of the Indonesian economy as well as a significant source of the country’s foreign exchange revenues. According to the Center of Data and Information - Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the growth of foreign visitor arrivals to Indonesia has increased rapidly by 9.61 percent since 2010 to the present. One of the most potential tourism destinations is Komodo Island located in East Nusa Tenggara. With the island’s unique qualities, which include the habitat of the Komodo dragons and beautiful and exotic marine life, it is likely to be one of the promising tourism destinations in Indonesia and in the world. In 1986, the island has been declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism continuously promotes many of the country’s natural potential in tourism through various media: printed media, television and especially new media. However, there are challenges for the Indonesian tourism industry in facilitating entrepreneurship skills among the local people in East Nusa Tenggara. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (2011), East Nusa Tenggara is considered as one of the poorest provinces in Indonesia where the economy is lower than the average, with a high inflation of 15%, and unemployment of 30%. This research is needed to explore further the phenomenon behind the above facts, aiming at examining the role of new media in facilitating entrepreneurship in the tourism industry in Komodo Island. The results of this study are expected to provide insights that can help local tourism in East Nusa Tenggara. Keywords: Tourism, Entrepreneurship, New Media

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia is a fertile ground for flourishing respect towards differences as well as nurturing diversity, considering its unique history and genealogy of its formation. Despite the progress of information and communication technology for the last two decades, added with the emergence of informational politics or online politics after the reformation era 1998, there arose several radical groups and extreme social organization threatening the very foundation of multiculturalism in Indonesia, namely the freedom of religion/belief. Through analyzing and synthesizing the framework of critical multiculturalism and online politics, this research results in producing four parameters (accessibility, interactivity, criticality, solidarity) to measure the level of pro and anti-multiculturalism within certain websites. Here, the role and influence of sympathetic communication power is highly important because online politics depend more on the soft power rather than hard power, rational persuasion in communicative action framework rather than physical violence and politics-by-mass movement. Critical multiculturalism is properly needed in an era of information proliferation and easy access to various power relations. For the sake of a better future, critical multiculturalism should participate further and deeper in the context of emancipation, empowerment, and struggle for justice, especially justice for “those who have no voice, those who toil, those who live unappreciated, and those who die in silence.” Keywords: multiculturalism, critical multiculturalism, online politics, informational politics,Communication Power, “accesibility, interactivity, criticality and solidarity” parameters

The presence of information and communication technologies to accelerate the globalization of this. Globalization touches all the important aspects of life. Globalization creates new challenges and problems that must be answered, solved in an effort to harness globalization for the benefit of life. Abstract

Interactivity, digitality, and virtuality are three important aspects of Internet technology, among others. Thanks to its break-through characteristics, internet brings many changes into the lives of people. Due to its accessible features and loads of information, many people’s needs on information, entertainment and social interaction are necessarily answered. One of the most interesting and widely developed features on internet is online game. Online game promises its users the ability to connect with other fellow users in real time. This paper intends to view online game as a second reality, different with the real world we live in. By employing psychoanalysis theory initiated and developed by Sigmund Freud, this paper sees online game as a playing field for human Id (Freudian biological desire), constantly repressed in real world due to its persisting conflict with ego and super ego. Online game commonly perceived as “unreal virtual sphere” facilitates its users to freely conduct certain actions which, in normal and real life, are forbidden, such as killing and raping. Therefore, online game could be perceived as catharsis, or outlet for bestial desire of human being. The hypotheses needs to be proven in this paper is whether sexual and violent character of online game really possess catharsis function to release the biological desire of the users, or, the other way around, namely, repressing the Id. The methodology used in this paper is case study with both observation as well as literature study relevant with online game in question. The authors attempt to observe directly and also conduct interview with ten children in five different internet shop (warnet). The theoretical paradigm used is twofold, namely, catharsis theory and Freudian psychoanalysis. To support the main paradigm used, the authors also use media dependency theory proposed by DeFleur, including, but not limited to, arousal and aggressive cues. Abstract
