Abstract

This paper presents the realization and design of a linear switched reluctance motor (LSRM) with a new stator structure. One of the setbacks in the LSRM family is the presence of high force ripple leads to vibration and acoustic noise. The proposed structure provides a smooth force profile with reduced force ripple. Finite element analysis (FEA) is used to predict the force and other relevant parameters.A frequency spectrum analysis of the force profile using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) is presented.The FEA and experimental results of this paper prove that LSRMs are one of the strong candidates for linear propulsion drives.

Abstract

The five-level inverter has been used for many applications in renewable energy systems. Even though its harmonic distortion was lower than the conventional two-level inverter. The five-level converter has some disadvantages such as increasing power semiconductor, complex pulse width modulation control methods, and problem with the voltage balancing of the capacitor. This paper aims to propose a modified five-level inverter based on sinusoidal pulse width modulation using phase shifted carrier to enhancing the capacitor voltage balancing. This modified five-level inverter reduces the overall cost and the complexity of the pulse width modulator. Thus making the proposed control system highly simple. The performance and its controller were validated by means of standard laboratory equipments. The analysis, simulation and implementation result showed better performance of five-level inverter.

Abstract

In this paper, a new control method for quasi-Z-source cascaded multilevel inverter based grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system is proposed. The proposed method is capable of boosting the PV array voltage to a higher level and solves the imbalance problem of DC-link voltage in traditional cascaded H-bridge inverters. The proposed control system adjusts the grid injected current in phase with the grid voltage and achieves independent maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for the separate PV arrays. To achieve these goals, the proportional-integral (PI) controllers are employed for each module. For achieving the best performance, this paper presents an optimum approach to design the controller parameters using particle swarm optimization (PSO). The primary design goal is to obtain good response by minimizing the integral absolute error. Also, the transient response is guaranteed by minimizing the overshoot, settling time and rise time of the system response. The effectiveness of the new proposed control method has been verified through simulation studies based on a seven level quasi-Z-Source cascaded multilevel inverter.

Abstract

This paper proposes a binary DC source reduced switch 7-level inverter. Binary DC source reduced switch inverter is triggered by the Unipolar PWM strategy having sinusoidal and trapezoidal reference with triangular carriers. These Pulse Width Modulating (PWM) strategies include Phase Disposition (PD), Alternate Phase Opposition Disposition (APOD), Carrier Overlapping (CO). Performance factors like Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), VRMS (fundamental) and crest factor are evaluated for various modulation indices. Simulations were performed using MATLAB-SIMULINK. It is observed that UPDPWM strategy with trapezoidal reference provides output with relatively low distortion and UCOPWM strategy with trapezoidal reference provides relatively higher fundamental RMS output voltage.

Abstract

Below is given the brief analysis of development trend for vehicle traction levitation systems with magnetic suspension. It is presented the assessment of potential development of traction levitation systems in terms of their simplicity. The examples are considered of technical solutions focused on reducing the complexity of transport systems. It is proposed the forecast of their further development.

Abstract

Shunt active power filter based on multilevel inverter is used to compensate the power factor and to delete the harmonics. This one permits to reduce the inverse voltages applied to the filter switches and their switching frequencies. Nevertheless, the high number of used switches requires a complicated controller and increases the switching losses; where the necessity of finding another resolution system. In this work a new topology of multilevel inverter is proposed as a shunt active power filter using two IGBT transistors in series of opposite sense meticulously controlled by a parallel control algorithm, with the concept of reduced number of six switches which are able to create five levels of the output voltage. This system substute the classical system of eight switches. The harmonic currents identification is carried out using the instantaneous active and reactive power method. The simulation is performed using Matlab/Simulink. The obtained results show that the filtering performances are well enhanced.

Abstract

This paper presents an approach to minimize the harmonics contained in the input current of single phase Modified Half Bridge Resonant inverter fitted induction heating equipment. A switch like IGBT, GTO, and MOSFET are used for this purpose. It analyzes the harmonics or noise content in the sinusoidal input current of this inverter. Fourier Transform has been used to distinguish between the fundamental and the harmonics, as it is a better investigative tool for an unknown signal in the frequency domain. An exhaustive method for the selection of different power semiconductor switches for Modified Half Bridge Resonant inverter fed induction heater is presented. Heating coil of the induction heater is made of litz wire which reduces the skin effect and proximity effect at high operating frequency. With the calculated optimum values of input current of the system at a particular operating frequency, Modified Half Bridge Resonant inverter topology has been simulated using P-SIM software. To obtain the Input current waveforms through it, further analysis has been employed. From this analysis selection of suitable power semiconductor switches like IGBT, GTO and MOSFET are made. Waveforms have been shown to justify the feasibility for real implementation of single phase Modified Half Bridge Resonant inverter fed induction heater in industrial application.

Abstract

Speed Estimation without speed sensors is a complex phenomenon and is overly dependent on the machine parameters. It is all the more significant during low speed or near zero speed operation. There are several approaches to speed estimation of an induction motor. Eventually, they can be classified into two types, namely, estimation based on the machine model and estimation based on magnetic saliency and air gap space harmonics. This paper analyses the effect of incorrect setting of parameters like the stator resistance, rotor time constant, load torque variations and also Voltage unbalance on various adaptive control based speed estimation techniques fed from the machine model. It also shows how the convergence mechanisms of the adaptation schemes are affected during these conditions. The equivalent models are built and simulated offline using MATLAB/SIMULINK blocksets and the results are analysed.

Abstract

In this paper, a comparative evaluation of two modelling tools for switching AC-AC power converters is presented. Both of them are based on average modelling techniques. The first approach is based on the circuit averaging technique and consists in the topological manipulations, applied to a converters states. The second approach makes use of state-space averaged model of the converter and is based on analytical manipulations using the different state representations of a converter. The two modelling techniques are applied to a same AC-AC converter called matrix-reactance frequency converter based on buck-boost topology. These techniques are compared on the basis of their rapidity, quantity of calculations and transformations and its limitations.

Abstract

With the rising fuel cost, increasing demand of power and the concerns for global climate change, the use of clean energy make the connection of power electronics building bloc in the heart of the current research. The high output current applications make the parallel connection of modular inverters to be a solution for the use of low power building block inverters where the output power cannot be handled by a single inverter configuration. In this context, average-modeling using average phase–leg technique allows the n-parallel connected inverters to be analyzed accurately and rapidly without requiring the complexity of the full switched inverter topology. The obtained analytical solution along with the equivalent circuit model makes easier the design of the control loop. The analytical solution of the n-parallel connected inverters shows the impact of the line and grid impedance on the performance of the overall system. The impact of this coupling has to be investigated such that the main feature of paralleling inverters is guaranteed and that the inverter mode of operation will not be compromised. The main advantage of paralleling inverters can be lost for a certain coupling impedance considerations.
