Abstract

This paper deals with the problem design of an unknown input observer (UIO) for a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) subject to disturbances. These disturbances can be considered as unknown inputs (UI). The state space model of the DFIG is obtained from the voltage equations of the stator and rotor. Then, this latter is used for the design of an unknown input observer (UIO) in order to estimate both the state and the unknown inputs of the DFIG. Furthermore, the UIO gains are computed by solving a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Simulations results are given to show the performance and the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract

In the deregulating electricity market, many private sector power producers are participating actively. With growing number of the wind mills and solar power generation, the reactive power production will be more because of induction generator and inductive type load. Many blackouts have happened in the past decades due to more reactive power which lead to a decrease in the magnitude of real power. It is very essential to compensate the reactive power, increase the real power flow in the transmission line, increase the transmission efficiency, improve the system stability and be in a safer place to save the fossil fuels for the future. In this paper the importance of reactive power and its various compensation techniques are applied to a five bus deregulated test case modeled and analyzed. The simulations were done using Matlab Simulink, for various FACT controllers such as STATCOM, SVC, SSSC and UPFC compensation and the results were tabulated and compared.

Abstract

This paper investigates the utilization of a predictive current control for a fourport DC/DC power electronic converter with an input port, two storage portsand a load port suitable for a Hybrid Electric Vehicle. Being a power converterwith multiple ports, it has different operating modes. While the Stateflow con-troller is employed to handle mode selection, the predictive current controller isemployed for the inductor current control. The control laws governing each op-erating mode is derived out for valley current control. By making the inductorcurrent in the upcoming switching cycle equivalent to the reference, the duty cycleis predicted. Simulation and experimental results show improvements in currentripple minimization, faster dynamic performance and comparable to traditionalcontrol method.

Abstract

This paper deals with the synthesis of a speed control strategy for a five-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive based on backstepping controller. The proposed control strategy considers the nonlinearities of the system in the control law. The stability of the backstepping control strategy is proved by the Lyapunov theory. Simulated results are provided to verify the feasibility of the backstepping control strategy.

Abstract

This paper presents the modified synchronous reference frame based Shunt Active Filter (SAF) for the instantaneous compensation of harmonic current present at the Point of Common Coupling. The harmonics generated by the non linear load are extracted using the positive frame and negative frame of the input signal using the modified synchronous reference frame theory with extended Multiple Reference Frame based PLL (EMRFPLL). Based on the harmonics extracted, pulse width modulation signals are generated using Artificial Neural Network based Space Vector Pulse width Modulation technique (ANNSVPWM). Using this switching technique the losses can be reduced and compensation can be done more accurately The concept was verified using MATLAB / Simulink Simulation and the results confirm the THD at point of common coupling is below the required standards.

Abstract

Recent technological progresses in the wide-area measurement systems (WAMS) are realizing the centralized controls as a breakthrough for improving the power systems stability. The most challenging deficiency against WAMS technology is related to communication delays. If this latency is neglected, it can deteriorate the damping performance of closed loop control or even degrade the system stability. This paper investigates a conventional Wide Area Damping Controller (WADC) for a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) to damp out the Sub-Synchronous Resonance (SSR) and also investigation of the destructive effect of time delay in remote feedback signal. A new optimization algorithm called teaching-learning-based- optimization (TLBO) algorithm has been implemented to normalize and optimize the parameters of the global SSR damping controller. The IEEE Second Benchmark Model is considered as the system under study and all simulations are carried out in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment.

Abstract

Excessive dead time in complementary switches causes significant energy losses in DC-DC power conversion. The optimization of dead time prevents the degradation of overall efficiency by minimizing the body diode conduction of power switches and, as a consequence, also reduces reverse recovery losses. The present work aims at analyzing the influence of one of the most important characteristics of a digital controller, the timer resolution, in the context of dead-time optimization for synchronous buck converters. In specific, the analysis quantifies the efficiency de-pendency on the timer resolution, in a parameter set that comprises duty-cycle and dead-time, and also converter frequency and analog-to-digital converter accuracy. Based on a sensorless optimization strategy, the relationship between all these limiting factors is described, such as the number of bits of timer and analog-to-digital converter. To validate our approach experimental results are provided using a 12-to-1.8V DC-DC converter, controlled by low- and high-resolution pulse-width modulation signals generated with an XMC4200 microcontroller from Infineon Technologies. The measured results are consistent with our analysis, which predicts the power efficiency improvements not only with a fixed dead time approach, but also with the increment of timer resolution.

Abstract

PM machines in which slot number and pole number combination differs by one have to be configured with asymmetric winding pattern in order to maximize it back-emf performance. However, this asymmetric winding configuration inherently results an unwanted Unabalanced Magnetic Force (UMF). Investigations of electromagnetic performance of fractional-slot asymmetric winding PM machines using 2-D Finite-Element Analysis are presented. The investigations are mainly driven by the effort of minimizing the UMF. By employing techniques such as non-uniform number of coil turns in every tooth and asymmetric design of stator tooth, the UMF are expected can be minimized. The investigations show that the radial component of UMF has greater effect than the tangential component on the UMF itself. In all proposed techniques, a slight reduction of machine torque performance is inevitable.
