Abstract

Comics, although they were heavily debated in relation to their position in the fine arts discourse, in the end, they were increasingly accepted, especially since the 1960s. Since then, comic characteristics have been identified and it has been found that the representations presented in comics tend to be more particular, specific, and contextual so that they are often used to represent certain cultural contexts. The comic titled Story of A Boy, A Mother, and A Mountain, which was exhibited at the 2018 Indonesian Art Award (IAA), did not try not relate to a particular cultural context - at least not explicitly -. But for readers who understand the context, and have knowledge of the myths of Mount Tangkuban Parahu or the Legend of Sangkuriang, they will most likely link in that direction based on their background, plot, and symbolic representation. Tangkuban Parahu Mountain itself is a mountain located in West Java and its existence is closely related to Sundanese traditions and culture. Behind the existence of the mountain which is one of the important tourist attractions in West Java, there is a widely known myth, often called the Legend of Sangkuriang. The myth of the Sangkuriang legend is retold in the form of comics without narrative text, without face visualization, and uses more panels that are fluid and dynamic. The reason behind the aesthetic consideration is the emphasis on the unconscious aspect as an expression of the concept of the "Oedipus complex" in Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis, the emphasis of the work not on the narrative, but on its sensations and passions, as the Nietzsche's Dionysian concept, as well as the historical-cultural aspects of comic artists who want to present comics and stories that fit their personal background, also expect an authenticity that emerges from West Javanese culture and Sundanese traditions.

Abstract

The stencil technique is one of the printing techniques in printmaking which is the oldest background design technique. This technique uses a stencil media that is useful as a print barrier on the print media that will paint. This easy way of working using media that can be found anywhere has inspired it to be applied to ethnic dress innovations. Indonesia, which has various ethnic groups, is rich in culture, as well as textile motifs that have their own characteristics. Riau has the pucuk rebung textile motif which is famous for its fusion of Islamic and Malay culture. Pucuk rebung have a philosophical meaning that can be translated into ethnic clothing innovations, one of which is by applying them using the stencil technique. The purpose of compiling this comprehensive study scientific article is to apply the knowledge gained from lectures on Ethnic Dress and Ornamental Design courses, introducing stensil technique as an ornamental technique in fabrics, and develop student creativity as well as improve quality, product competitiveness, added value to ethnic clothing innovation products in preserving the Riau regional culture by using the Project Based-Learning method which can produce permanent knowledge because it provides learning in real situation.

Abstract

Digitalization has brought new complexity to the issue of archival photographs of artworks. This paper explores the relationship between two-dimensional artwork and its representation in the form of digital archive photos. The author mobilizes the concept of the relation between representamens and objects in Charles Sanders Peirce's theory of signs. Based on the analyses carried out in this paper, the presence of the Icon and Index feels very strong in the case of archival photographs of works of art. This finding stresses the need of two types of archival photos of works, namely primary photos and secondary photos. Classification is carried out based on the level of similarity in the representation seen in the archive photo.

Abstract

The participation approach has long been recognized in sustainable design projects. Some recent material innovations strive for demonstrating community participation in their design process to achieve a sustainable outcome. However, the terminology of participation can be perceived and implemented differently for actors involved in the process. Responding to the diverse understanding of participation, this paper tries to examine the implementation of participation in the making of two well-known renewable materials innovations, namely Totomoxtle and Pinatex. The methodology used in this research is a comparative descriptive which is analyzed through literature and comparative studies by referring to the ladder of participation theory by Arnstein, the form of participation by White, and the participation in design by Lee. Based on the analysis, there are different levels of participation held by actors and also various forms of participation occur in the design process. Moreover, the comparative studies also show that the actors who occupy a similar level of participation do not directly comprise a similar form and function of participation. However, the diverse forms and levels of participation in sustainable innovation establish a different type of relation and space for interaction between designers and other actors involved.

Abstract

Benjang ritual performance is a traditional performance born from cultural ceremonies that still survive and are carried out today, especially by the younger generation. Through the functional mindset and lifestyle of Bandung's young people today, Ritual Benjang is present through its distinctive features in the experience of quality ritual beauty and is believed to achieve the life goals of the people of Uj Berung Bandung. Furthermore, the show symbolizes the existence of Benjang as a medium to get closer to God and as a sports activity supporting sportsmanship. This study uses a qualitative method with observation and perception based on phenomena. The concept of taste Sahrdaya becomes a foundation for the entire layout of the space used in the ritual of the performance and the audience in living and even interacting at the Benjang mask show. The higher their understanding of the concept of taste, the stronger the sensibility in responding to attractive mask shows. Similarly, the aesthetic quality of the mask dance performance is also complementary in a ritual performance supported by the concept of taste. The success of the implementation of taste in this show provides aesthetic stimuli for the audience to achieve catharsis for them with the involvement of a sense that gives meaning in life and becomes a person who is always inferior.

Abstract

Environmental conservation and sustainable living were a movement that directed people to return to using eco-friendly materials, especially in creating textile products. One solution to the problem is to reduce textile waste made from synthetic materials by creating organic inks that can be an alternative ink in the textile printing process. This study used a qualitative approach and experimental methods through the exploratory phase of the extract solution of several natural dyes added with the thickener alginate, guar gum, and tapioca flour. The organic ink has been applied to textiles made from 100% cotton using a screen printing technique with a post-mordanting fixation process. This experiment aimed to determine the optimal results of the dye paste solution (organic ink) on absorption, fabric color, fading test, visual and texture results. The experimental results prove that color printing using eco-friendly materials with screen printing techniques can be applied to textiles. Each extract solution, thickening agent, and mordant substance on the fixation process have different absorption with the result that has been made varying colors and visual results on the textile surface.

Abstract

Abstract. The current study focuses on representation about visual artwork regarding its value of paradoxes and harmony. We use material object which is strongly contradictive as usual to get a unique aesthetic value through compotition, harmony, and color in paiting. The present study also uses descriptive qualitative method to analyze the value of human internal organs as a big topic of painting. Result shows that representational mimesis is closely related to the paradoxical context that is arranged in harmony between one field and another with consideration of aesthetic values. Also, succesfull work in this study is strongly linked with ideas (human’s organ) and visual (painting) which creates a perception of beauty regarding human’s organ as an inspiration of artworks.
