Abstract

Sociolinguistics is an interdisciplinary study of linguistics that relates language as an object of study to the social order of society. To analyze sociolinguistics, linguistic theory can be used. In this study, researcher found various types of jargon. The jargons are varied, some are in the form of words, phrases, and abbreviations. The word is the word is the smallest language unit that fills one of the syntactic functions (subject, predicate, object, or description) in a sentence. The jargon in the form of phrases found generally consists of two or more words. In addition, there is also a lot of jargon in the form of abbreviation. acronyms and short are part of abbreviation. In this study, the objects analyzed are sentences that are often thrown out during official activities or during leisure time. The researcher used qualitative research methods in conducting this research because the one who obtained the data was the only research source. In addition, this is a descriptive study because the researcher represents the findings descriptively. The results of this study are sociolinguistic analysis on three extracurricular organizations at the Islamic University of Madura using three approaches, observation, interview, and documentation. In this study, researcher found several patterns of jargon. The results of this study, researcher found 23 jargon in the three organizations. There are three types of jargon patterns. Based on the results of this study, the researcher hopes that the research can become significant data for the linguistic community and a starting point for future researcher, especially those who are interested in studying sociolinguistics. This research is expected to increase the reader's knowledge about jargon and its relationship in society.

Abstract

Legal translation is a translation made for interest and has a legal nature, an example of legal translation is the translation of a notary deed. This translation includes institutional translation because it has a close relationship in culture and is quite difficult to translate by ordinary people. Therefore, here the author will look for several solutions that can be used by other translators when they want to translate the same legal text. Here the author finds several techniques that can be used in translating legal texts and some online references that can be used if you find an equivalent or term in the law. There are several strategies used by the author when translating notarial deed documents, such as the use of literal translation, adaptive translation, calque translation, official translation, cultural equivalence, transference, and various online references that are used to support better translation results.

Abstract

The research objectives were to find answers the perceive also interests Thai EFL students towards teacher-made YouTube videos when learning writing virtually. Thirty students from grade 5 at Ban Nonkokkha School, Loei, Thailand, participated. The method used in this research was mixed methods research with explanatory design type. The researcher collected quantitative data by distributing questionnaires earlier then implemented the qualitative data by conducting interviews to add more reliable results. The researcher analyzed the data obtained from the questionnaire were analyzed using a Likert scale calculation by frequency of the responses received by students expressed in percentages and then explained from the results of interviews. From quantitative and qualitative analysis, it is known that most students agree in virtual writing learning through teacher-made YouTube videos. The findings also showed the teacher-made YouTube videos make learning more enjoyable, make learning English easier, know English words better, and encourage the students to learn English even aside from class. Moreover, they can also learn how to write the correct sentences. Meanwhile, the study results also showed that some students find it difficult when virtual learning takes place. Some of them had low vocabulary mastery problems and poor internet signal.

Abstract

During the 2019 corona pandemic, Indonesia itself decided to conduct online learning, both at schools and universities. Students are required to carry out the virtual learning process in their respective homes. One of the ways in which online classes take place is to conduct online discussions between students. Therefore in this study, the researchers conducted research with the aim of finding out what difficulties students faced in presenting their arguments in online discussions during this corona pandemic. Researchers used qualitative methods through online surveys by giving several questions to correspondents in the form of questionnaires using google form. There are 34 students who are willing to be correspondents in our research this time. The reseachers produce so many surprising facts that have been experienced by students when online discussions take place. Some students did experience difficulties in delivering arguments in online discussion sessions ranging from not being confident and also lack of knowledge in building arguments. There is a lot that needs to be evaluated about the way lecturers make this online discussion in order that students are better prepared to convey their arguments in online discussion.

Abstract

Technology, using its ability to reach audience at anytime and anywhere, has emerged as a powerful platform to assist learners in their language learning. This paper aims to discuss generally (1) how to develop web-based learning using Hot Potatoes and Editplus, and (2) how does web-based learning model using hot potatoes optimize English language learning. Krashen claims that real acquisition happens only as a result of exposure to comprehensible and meaningful input is only slightly beyond their current level of competence (i+1). Developing web-based learning model can be one of the strategy for providing comprehensible input for the learners since it can be accessed at anytime and anywhere by anyone. Besides, web-based learning model help the learners exposed by other platforms easily, leading them to unconscious daily input to English language. Little research discusses about the combination use of Hot Potatoes and Editplus in making a web-based learning. This paper discusses the detailed steps to build a web-based learning using HotPotatoes combined with Editplus, in order to make a web-based learning model to optimize the input in English language learning.

Abstract

Vocabulary is list of words with their meanings, especially for learning a foreign language (Richard, 2002:4). In learning vocabulary, media can be used to transmit the information from the teacher to the students. Conventional flashcard as a media is commonly used in the classroom. In this case, Octaland Flashcard Apps can become alternative media for teaching vocabulary to young learners. This study aims 1) to illustrate the process of teaching vocabulary to young learners by using Octaland Flashcard Apps; 2) to investigate the strengths and weaknesses of the use Octaland Flashcard Apps as media in teaching vocabulary to young learners; and 3) to investigate young learners responses toward the use of Octaland Flashcard Apps in Teaching Vocabulary. This research was qualitative research conducted in SD Negeri Jamaras Cianjur at the fourth grade elementary school. The instrument used observation, interview, and questionnaire. The result of analysis shows that in implementing Octaland Flashcard Apps the teacher divided the activities into three: Pre-teaching, While-teaching and Post-teaching. There were several strengths of using this apps: the apps made young learners happy and enthusiastic, the apps produced native speaker sound, the apps was also added by cheerful music background, and this apps could be multifunction media. However, there were some weaknesses of the apps such as this apps needed good internet connection, this apps needed well-lightening to scan the flashcard and the use of this apps made the students a little bored because of waiting their turn to scan the Octaland Flashcard Apps. Regarding young learners response toward the use of Octaland Flashcard Apps in teaching vocabulary, the learners admitted that it created fun and interesting learning for them because they could learn and play at the same time, the characters on the flashcards could be alive as real object, and it was easier for them to memorize and comprehend English vocabulary. However, the learners also stated that there were some words that difficult to spell and the learning was a little boring because they had to wait for their turn to scan the flashcard. Furthermore, the students felt that the learning needed more opportunities and various cards, and they wanted to continually use this Octaland Flashcard Apps for their learning.

Abstract

This research is entitled "The misery of an alcoholic's life portrayed in Paula Hawkins' the Girl on the Train.". The purpose of this study is to describe the background of the misery experienced by Rachel's character. A poor woman who has an unlucky fate and her life is full of sadness. The approach used in this research is a psychoanalytic approach. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The results of this study indicate that one of the causes of Rachel's misery is the effect of alcohol. Rachel is an alcoholic, so it's hard to control herself. Throughout the story in this novel, alcohol is one of the most dominating and has an impact on Rachel. Rachel has an internal conflict. She experienced conflict with herself, on the one hand she tried to stop being an alcoholic but her intentions always failed because she was an alcoholic who was classified as acute. Some serious problems appear from this alcohol addiction. From the results of the analysis, it was found that alcohol was behind Rachel's misery, including divorce, job loss and depression. Keywords: Misery, Paula Hawkins, The Effect of Alcohol, Alcoholic, internal conflict, psychoanalytic approach

Abstract

ABSTRACTComedies of different countries have their own absurdities. Absurdity is something that human often experience for searching the meaning of life. Therefore, a comparative study of literature is used in this study to compare absurdities in the comedy originating from Madura and England. The objective of this study is to find out how the absurdities are shown in the Madurese and English comedy. Then, the method of this study is qualitative method. The sources of the data of this study are Juragan Hadroh and Gara-Gara Tukang Cukur EDAN!! by Sukur CS that were performed in 2021 and are compared to George Bernard Shaw’s Too True To Be Good that was performed in 1949. This study uses theory of absurdity that can be called the philosophy of the absurd by Albert Camus. The data of this study are in the form of characters utterance, narrator narrations, and gestures. This study found that both of Madurese and English comedies are existed as the form of searching for the meaning of life. Absurdities that are shown by Madurese and English comedies start from the names of characters, utterances and acts of the characters.
