Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out whether using audio visual media can improve the students’ listening comprehension at seventh grade students ofMTs Negeri Tarakan. This research used CAR (Classroom Action Research) conductedin two cycles, each cycle consists of two meetings. The instrument of this researchwere observation checklist for teacher and students, and listening test. The result ofthe observation checklist for teacher got score in the first cycle, meeting I: 74(70.47%) and meeting II: 80 (746.19%) then, the second cycle the score in meeting I:83 (79.04%) and meeting II: 88 (81.90%). And The result of the students score in first cycle 19 (70.37%) students success to reach the minimum passed grade (KKM) and 8 (26.62%) students fail to reach the minimum passed grade. But insecond cycle there was improvement of the result of the students’ score in listeningcomprehension, can be seen from the result that 22 (81.48%) students success toreach the minimum passed grade and only 5 (18.51%) students fail to reach theminimum passed grade. The conclusion in this research by using audio visual media inlearning English can improve students’ listening comprehension especially for seventh grade students in MTs Negeri Tarakan. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a significant difference inimproving the vocabulary of students who are taught using the Extensive Readingstrategy and those taught using the Intensive Reading strategy in the tenth grade ofSMK Kesehatan Kaltara Tarakan. This research method is Quasi-experimental.Samples were selected using the purposive sampling technique. There are two classessampled in this study. The treatment for the experimental class was taught using theExtensive Reading Strategy and the control class using the Intensive Reading Strategy.The research instrument was a multiple-choice written test. The data analyzed werethe pre-test and post-test from the experimental and control classes. In analyzing thedata, researchers used an independent sample T-test at SPSS 23.0. The results showedthat there were differences in the scores of students from the experimental class andthe control class. This is evidenced by the results of the student's average score. Thetest results before being given the treatment (pre-test) of the experimental classobtained an average score of 40.00 and the control class obtained 51.11. Whereas forthe posttest results, the experimental class with a mean score of 69.81, and the posttestresults for the control class with a mean score of 64.26. This can be seen from the twoclasses getting a higher increase after giving a treatment by using extensive readingand intensive reading strategies. The results of the independent sample T-test betweenthe posttest in the experimental class and the control class were (t-score = 2.559) (ttable=2.007)withavalueof0.13.Basedontheexplanationabove,theresultsofthedataanalysis prove that there is a significant difference between students who aretaught using the Extensive Reading strategy and students who are taught using theIntensive Reading strategy in increasing student vocabulary. Ha is accepted when thet-score is higher than the t-table, while Ho is rejected.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out The correlation between students’ grammar mastery and students’ writing achievement at eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Tarakan. Writing is one of the skills that required the users to master the grammar. The sample was taken from one of the 11 classes of eleventh grade students by used purposive sampling, to collect the data the researcher used Grammar Test and Writing Test. To analyse the data the researcher used Pearson Product Moment. This research used quantitative approach with correlation design, from the result of the research found that there was a fair correlation between students’ grammar mastery and students writing achievement. The result showed that between students’ grammatical mastery and students’ writing achievement obtained a significance value of 0.05 with a significant value of 0.0020.05 which means that there was a significant correlation between grammatical mastery and writing achievement, meanwhile for r test value r table with the correlation value was 0.5100.3388, the correlation of grammatical mastery and writing achievement was 0.510 which is a medium correlation between grammatical mastery and writing achievement. Based on the result of the research and discussion it can be concluded that there was a significant correlation between students’ grammatical mastery and students’ writing achievement at XI grade students of SMAN 1 Tarakan.

Abstract

This study tries to analyze and find out students' factors and problems that affect students’ ability in speaking skills. The aims of this study are to answer two research questions: (1) what factors and problems affect the students' speaking skills and (2) what factors and problems are most dominant experienced by students which affect their speaking skills. This research uses descriptive qualitative analysis techniques to obtain data. The object of this study was 5th-semester students in the English department, Tidar university. In obtaining data, this study uses a questionnaire used by Marriam (2015) regarding related research. The intention of this study is to find out the students' factors and problems in speaking skills.

Abstract

The aimed of this research is to improve the student’s vocabulary mastery in English by applying index card match strategy in teaching and learning process  at  the seventh  grade students of SMP  Nasional  Plus  Indo Tionghoa Tarakan.This  research  was use classroom  action research  (CAR). The research consist of two cycles and each cycle consist of three meetings. The research was conducted on February 05th until 21st, 2020 in SMP Nasional Plus Indo Tionghoa Tarakan. The researcher used all the seventh grade students as the research subject where there are only 32 students of seventh grade. The subject consist of 16 females and 16 males. The technique of collecting the data used observation checklist to observe the teaching and learning process and vocabulary test to check the students’ English  vocabulary mastery. The research  result showed that the percentage of success students in vocabulary test for the first cycle was 65.6% and the second cycle was 87.5%. Then the observation result showed that the percentage of first cycle was 91% for the teacher and 84.3% for the students and the percentage of the second cycle was 88% for the teacher and 87% for the students. Therefore, it prove that the index card match strategy can improve the students’ English vocabulary mastery  at  the seventh  grade students of SMP  Nasional  Plus  Indo Tionghoa Tarakan.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out any contribution of self-esteem to the English learning achievement of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Tarakan. This research employed a correlational method and the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Tarakan as the population with a total of 348 students. The number of samples in this research was 186 students who were determined by using the Slovin formula with an error rate of 5%, so that 16-17 students were taken from each class and used the proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The data collection techniques in this research used a questionnaire that was distributed to the sample, an interview to representative students, and documentation which was mainly from the result of final test of the odd semester in the academic year 2020/2021. The data analysis technique in this research used descriptive analysis and regression analysis. The results of the research showed that the mean score of self-esteem was 78.45 with the percentage spread across the very high category of 3.76%, high 41.94%, moderate 34.95%, low 15.05% and very low 4.30%, while the mean score of students’ English learning achievement was 79.93 with the percentage ranged from the very good category of 6.45%, good 43.01%, fair 31.72%, to poor 18.82%. The T-test result was 0.000 which was less than 0.05 indicated that the independent variable contributed to the dependent variable. The regression equation was Y = 16.487 + 0.809, which meant the constant value of the English learning achievement was 16.487 and the self-esteem value was 0.809, where for every point increased in the self-esteem variable, the learning achievement value would increase about 0.809 point. The coefficient of determination (R2) which was 0.088 pointed out that the students’ self-esteem contributed to their English learning achievement by 88%, while other 12% were contributed by other factors which were not explored in this research. Based on these results, it can be concluded that there was a contribution of self-esteem to the English learning achievement of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Tarakan.

Abstract

Writing is the most basic skill after reading. Writing can also express our ideas. What is in our brain, we can express it through writing. Human have 2 brains including, the right and left brains. The capacity of every human brain is very different. Some have hobbies such as drawing, singing, calculating and writing poetry. This research we conducted at SMA GKPI Padang Bulan  used mind mapping technique for students by writing narrative text. Where we only took 2 classes, including class XI IPA1 and XI IPA 2. This research aims to find several kinds of weaknesses in writing narrative text. Which method used in this research is quantitative data, instrument collecting data is an essay test which consists of 3 question. The researcher took the subject is a grade 11 students on the GKPI Padang Bulan private high school which consist of 27 students .

Abstract

The rapid development of technology affects all aspects of life includes education. It becomes essential for teachers to possess skill or competencies on using the internet technology for teaching. Teachers’ belief and competencies affects their attitude towards the use of internet technology for teaching. The aim of this study is to explore the teachers’ perceptions of the use of Internet-Assisted Language Teaching (IALT) for EFL Classroom in Indonesian Madrasah (Islamic School). The data of this survey study is collected through questionnaire and interview. The questionnaires are distributed on-line using Google form to 35English teachers of Madrasah in several regions of Indonesia, but only 26 returned. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and interpreted comprehensively. The result of the study shows that the majority of the English teachers in Madrasah have positive learning experience and positive attitude toward the use of IALT in their EFL classroom. However, they perceived that they lack of competencies and less knowledge to use the internet for teaching. Therefore, they need internet technology training to improve their skill in using and integrating internet technology for teaching EFL classroom.

Abstract

This research aims to design learning media for the XI class of State Vocational School 2 Tarakan. The research design was research and development (RD) using the ADDIE model; Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Data were collected using some research instrument; document analysis, questionnaires, and interviews. This research was conducted from February 14, 2022, to June 6, 2022. The subjects of this research were students of the XI class consisting of 87 students. The results of this study indicated that it has succeeded in developing a product in the form of a simple future tense poster as a learning medium for class XI SMKN 2 Tarakan. Then, the poster was validated by design expert, content. The quality of the posters from the design experts was “good” with a percentage of 88%, those from the content experts were also good based on Core and basic competence, and the language aspect was also good category with percentage of 89%. Furthermore, student response to poster media is “good”, with a percentage of 81%. Therefore, students are interested in learning English with poster media. Thus, it can be concluded that submitting simple future tense posters as a learning media for XI class State Vocational School 2 Tarakan increases student interest in learning English, especially tenses.

Abstract

The purpose of the research was to describe the results of the speaking problem factors of class XI students at SMA Negeri 1 Tanjung Selor. The design of the research was a descriptive. The subject was taken by random sampling technique. The researcher took 28 students of class XI with each representative from 8 classes. To collect the data, the researcher used documentation, questionnaire, and interview. Based on the results of the questionnaire showed that 1) there were 53.6% of students answered the lack of proper vocabulary selection, 2) 42.9% of students answered less confident in pronunciation, 3) 35.7% of students answered that they did not use proper grammar, and 46.4% of students answered that they could not speak English well. The results of interview with the teacher of English and the students showed that there were several problems faced by the students namely weak of grammar, weak of pronunciation in English, not fluent in speaking English, lack of vocabulary, difficulty compiling English sentences, lack of practice speaking at home and at school, embarrassed by wrong pronunciation and fear of being laughed at by friends. Based on the result of the research showed there were some factor of speaking problems faced by the eleventh graders of SMA Negeri 1 Tanjung Selor namely less of confidence, weak of grammar, weak of pronunciation in English, not fluent in speaking English, lack of vocabulary, difficulty compiling English sentences, lack of practice speaking.
