Abstract

Tarîqah as a spiritual organization has grown so rapidly as to the dynamics of Islamization in Indonesia. However, tharîqah today is often stigmatized as a passive organization which contributes nothing to the community due to its religious exclusivism focusing on vertical relationship between man and God. This stigma, on the contrary, was falsely proven by the findings of a tharîqah in Cirebon. Shattariah tharîqah in Cirebon plays an active role in the dynamics of social change in the palace, in the boarding schools, and in the batik industry. By using structuration theory analysis, it can be seen that the Shattariah tharîqah contributes to: firstly, the establishment of the institution of the palace, schools, and the batik industry; secondly, to the synergies between tradition and modernization in the midst of social change in Cirebon.

Abstract

Policy implementation remains one of the most common problems in developing countries due to the some strategic or administrative constrains. This study employs quantitative approach by using theory of public policy as the analytic lens. The research findings reveal that there are some problems and constraints in the policy implementation related to ZIS (zakât, infaq, cadaqât) i.e. Law No. 23 Year 2011 about zakât management. This study portrays a zakât institution in Surabaya, East Java. The readiness of policy operator, namely MoRA and BAZNAS becomes the dominant factor which hinders the implementation of zakât management policy. In addition, the legal problem due to the filing of Law No. 23/2011 to the Constitutional Court by KOMAZ also contributed significantly to the implementation of this Law.

Abstract

Haji Abdul Karim Amrullah is an Islamic reformer from Minangkabau who played a significant role in dawah and tabligh in the spirit of purifying the practice of Islamic values from the practice of bid’ah, taqlîd, and khurafat. His struggle was in line with the philosophy of traditional Minangkabau ‘adat basandi syara’, syara’ basandi kitabullah’. Haji Abdul Karim Amrullah who was known as Haji Rasul preached Islamic teaching both in oral and in writing. Along with Kaum Mudo Minangkabau (the youth of Minangkabau), he shared his thoughts through the Al-Munir magazine. He enforced the foundation of Islamic reformation through education by establishing Surau Jembatan Besi (Madrasah Sumatra Thawalib) and Muhammadiyah as social foundations that concern about the nation. This study examines the figure and the role of Haji Rasul in the development and renewal of Islam in Minangkabau. By employing qualitative method, particularly the historical approach, this study investigates all aspects of Haji Rasul’s life. With this perspective, the profile of Haji Rasul is intensively revealed, ranging from his family background, social background, education, patterns of thought, religious works, dawah activities, his role in education, his institutions, and his impact to the society.

Abstract

The debate on Quranic hermeneutics remains on the rise; especially when the opposition believes that hermeneutics is a scientific tradition born in western culture and used as the interpretation tools for Bible. By this belief, hermeneutics does not applicable to be used as the theory and interpretation method for Quran. Friedrich Schleiermacher is one of experts in general hermeneutics, even considered as the founding father of modern hermeneutics whose focuses are on grammatical and psychological aspects. This article attempts to test the reliability of Schleiermacher’s hermeneutics which interprets Basmallah ayah in Tafsîr Ahkam al-Quran by Ibn al-‘Arabi al-Maliki (543 H/ 1148 AD). Ibn al-‘Arabi al-Maliki is an established figure with Maliki mazhab on the field of legal tafseer in Sevilla, Spain. In this article, the theory and method of Schleiermacher’s psychological hermeneutics are employed. The article concludes that Quranic hermeneutics was interpreted incorrectly, as it is not used to interpret the Quran directly but to interpret the Quranic Tafsîr. The purpose of hermeneutics is therefore to develop the knowledge and the Quranic Tafsîr itself. This principle is in line with the motto, “keeping the good old tradition and taking the best new tradition”.

Abstract

This paper analyzes some anti-Shia articles which are abundantly available in online media. As a minority group, Shia is in a subaltern position where they were published negatively. This publication created negative paradigm of Shia in the society. In the borderless world of cyberspace, the production of Shia articles appears in the form of unequal semiotic relationships. Quite often, the meaning of Shia was published from the subjective perspective of a particular group. For this reason, this research examines the phenomenon of Shia trending articles from the cyber semiotic perspective. The research revealed that the subaltern bridle against the Shia in the media remains so strong. It requires self-awareness to provide equal opportunity for Shia speak up in the media in a balanced way. By such opportunity, the balanced view on the Shia can be obtained. It is hoped that this objective view could establish inclusivity in religious life.

Abstract

University students are young figures who are responsible as the nation successors thus they should have the vision and mission of nationality. However, this ideal condition can apparently not found in all universities. For example, the movement of the student organization at Muhammadiyah University Kendari was proven as not having the vision and mission of nationality. This study employed qualitative methods to describe the student organization at the University of Muhammadiyah Kendari. The findings reveal that: firstly, the university banned the growth and development of religious organizations other than IMM. Secondly, despite the university ban, student organization such as Gema Pembebasan (i.e. the development of HTI) kept appearing. Student religious movement on one hand is an encouraging phenomenon in the Islamic dawah and education. However, when it is not supervised with the concept of nationalism, the student organization of this kind will lead to radical movements in religious organizations.
