Abstract

Background: Maintaining the cleanliness of removable orthodontic appliances is often overlooked so it can lead to changes in Candida albicans into the pathogenic form. Celery leaves are one of the natural ingredients that have active compounds as antimicrobial. Objective: To determine the effects of celery leaf extract in inhibiting the growth of C.albicans found on re-movable orthodontic appliances. Methods: Laboratory experimental studies were conducted with post test only control group design involving 5 samples of removable orthodontic appliances, which were swabbed to obtain C.albicans. Samples were divided into 5 groups, 1 control group and 4 treatment groups with 10%, 30%, 50%, and 70% extract concentration and the inhibitory test was performed. Result: The greater the concentration of celery leaf extract, the greater the diameter of the inhibi-tory zone formed. Conclusion: Celery leaf extract has the effect in inhibiting the growth of C.albicans found on removable or-thodontic appliances.

Abstract

Background : The mixed tooth phase is the most important phase in the growth and development of the child's teeth and jaw. Interseptive treatment is given to children who experience a mixed dental phase, starting at the age of 7-8 years because at the age of 8 year permanent molars and permanent incisors have erupted. Early malocclusion’s treatment can avoid the occurrence of malocclusion and building the confidence in patients. The 2x4 appliance is a tool that provides good stability, which is applied to the first molars and erupted incisors. Conclusion : The corrections of malocclusion do not have to wait until the eruption of all permanent teeth. Waiting for eruption all permanent teeth will aggravate malocclusion and will make the treatment harder, such as treatments that require orthodontic surgical treatment, and extraction of permanent teeth. Treatment of malocclusion at an early age (7-8 years) will ease the correction of malocclusion because it is the age of growth and development of the jaw so the treatment time will be shorter compared to conventional orthodontic treatment.

Abstract

Background: Pain is defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with tissue damage. In orthodontic treatment, pain and discomfort are two common conditions experienced by most orthodontic patients during the treatment procedure. The emergence of this pain will have a major influence on the success of orthodontic treatment, given that the pain can reduce patient motivation in continuing treatment. Objective: to review the effect of orthodontic device movements on the pain caused and the factors that influence it. Method: Scientific evidence and clinical cases were drawn from the literature to support this review and information about pain perception during orthodontic treatment. Conclusion: The pain caused during orthodontic treatment is considered a normal condition because it is a biological event that is interrelated between the force exerted, local inflammation, the mechanism of action of orthodontic equipment on the teeth.

Abstract

Introduction: The apical third of the root canal system is very complex portion and challenging during endodontic treatment. Blockage of the root canal in the apical region by remnants of hard tissue and soft tissue debris, may cause procedural errors such as apical transportations, ledge and perforation. These debris contain bacteria inducing periradicular disease. The apical patency technique is considered as a way for maintaining the apical part free of debris by recapitulation using a small K-file through the apical foramen to assure that the canal system is predictably negotiable. Aim: To review the significance of apical patency as one of clinical approaches to reduce treatment failure on endodontic therapy. Conclusion: Apical patency may im-prove the result of cleaning procedure, for both mechanically and biologically way, in apical third area of canal system.

Abstract

Background: Alginate impression material has a weakness about its dimensional stability being rapidly changing. Some na-tural ingredients contain polysaccharides namely amylose and amylopectin used to modify it. Comparison of amylose and ami-lopectin affects the degree of starch gelatinization; the greater the amylopectin content, the starch gel will be wetter, stickier and absorb less water. Objective: To determine the effect of the addition of cassava starch and sago starch to the dimensional stability of alginate impression. Method: Using a true experimental laboratory method with a cross-sectional design. Result: Based on the 1-way Anova test, the p-value was 0,000; smaller than 0.05. According to the post hoc multiple comparison test, the average difference between alginate plus cassava starch with controls was 0.35500, while alginate plus sago starch with controls was 0.75500. Conclusion: There is a significant change between the addition of cassava starch and sago starch to the dimen-sional stability of the alginate impression.

Abstract

Teething is a normal part of the developmental phase of the teeth that occurs when the baby's first teeth begin to grow, namely deciduous teeth that appear sequentially on the gum surface. Teething usually begins when the baby is between 6-8 months old; the tooth growth occurs when hormones are released in the body causing a number of cells in the gingiva to die and separate so that deciduous teeth can appear. Although teething is a natural process that occurs in the growth of a child's teeth, sometimes it causes pain and discomfort causes parents to experience anxiety. This paper aims to provide an explanation of the theory of teething in handling teething cases.
