Abstract

Various methods are used by humans to respond to an uncomfortable climate. Indonesia has a wet tropical climate where the air temperature and humidity are quite high. Tembok Baluwarti of Yogyakarta Palace functions to encircle the area of the Sultan's residence and Abdi Dalem's settlement as well as the soldier's inspection line. Significant changes in form and function occur when HB VI allows outside Beteng residents to live temporarily in an open place inside and around Beteng. The east and west side settlements are considered to have no thermal comfort compared to the other side. The building and opening orientation factors influence the architectural design to increase thermal comfort in wet tropical climates. The solution to solving the thermal comfort problems carried out by each occupant in most residential and commercial buildings is that they add a trellis or extension of the roof width, then use banners/banners/bamboo to help block the heat of the sun, and the last strategy is to add vegetation in front of his house.

Abstract

The actual energy efficiency is not a new criterion in architectural design. The context of the existence of a building is always determined by the boundaries of climate and building materials. Energy Saving Architecture is one of the architectural typologies that is oriented towards the conservation of global natural environment. UINSA Campus (State Islamic University of Sunan Ampel) in Surabaya became one of the examples of buildings that are less efficient in energy use and have not met the idealized standard after the SNI 7330: 2009 about the college library that the college library should provide a building with enough space for collection , staff, and users with a ratio of at least 0.5 m2 for each student. This research was conducted to measure how far the level of energy efficiency used in UINSA Surabaya library building. Methods of observational research with qualitative descriptive. Observations, interviews, and measurements using measuring tools as a complement to this study. The building will be assessed from the LEED rating system. After the study of the object, the building of this library can achieve efficient energy building target of 60% means reduced 40%. The result comes from 15% vertical circulation using ramp, solar radiation reduction due to oriented building of 15%, Renewable energy use due to the use of solar panels and smart building technology by 10%.

Abstract

Special school for the deaf (SLB-B) in West Surabaya is a special education facility for deaf people in East Java which aims to develop deaf people to become independent and ready for global competition. The school was specially designed according to the characteristics and behaviors of deaf people who have limitations in receiving verbal information (sounds), due to disability in their hearing senses from birth or birth defects, so that the deaf is more likely to rely on the sense of sight to be able to receive information. However, now we live in a world that relies on delivering information through voice media. Therefore, there needs to be a place where the deaf is able to adapt to the environment more and gain education before they are finally ready in the real global competition. Based on these issues, this study aims to design an educational building specifically designed for the deaf (deaf space), with the theme "see the world, face the future" which can be interpreted that education is one of the most important things in human life, education can open knowledge and knowledge to the greatest extent so that with good education people will be more prepared to face global competition in the future.

Abstract

Juanda Airport is an international airport that is one of the infrastructure that is relied on by the Surabaya City government and the East Java provincial government to improve the economy of East Java. The increasing need for air transportation has made Juanda airport require development efforts to meet the needs of users from both locally and internationally while at the same time implementing the policies of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia regarding mass transportation. This study examines the importance of airport train stations presence as a form of transportation integration within the city. As the final result, this study submitted a design proposal with the theme chosen according to the conditions and context suitable for the Juanda airport train station. The airport train station proposal location is in the terminal 1 area of Juanda airport which is right in front of terminal 1. Based on the location, there are several problems, namely access to the station for passengers from terminal 2 and terminal 3 plans, vehicle movement patterns and passenger movement in airport train station operations, and the station's position is right in front of terminal 1 of the airport, this affects the appearance (identity) of joglo terminal 1. From the problems above the design proposal uses the theme "complement polarity" using the postmodern approach. Thus the Juanda airport train station is expected to be able to adjust to the system that has taken place at Juanda airport without disturbing each other.

Abstract

Sleman Regency, has a tourism potential that is high enough if optimized can provide a positive influence on the surrounding community. One of the tourist villages that has potential in Ds. Sendangagung Dsn. Brajan, Kec. Step aside. To produce tourism that is of interest to tourists, it is necessary to develop tourist facilities, namely: 1) Lodging that until now still uses the homes of local residents; 2) Bamboo Classes for Packages for Existence of Learning Bamboo Crafts; 3) Performance area as a place for performing dance and gamelan performances; 4) Bamboo Art Gallery and 5) Bamboo Shop as a container for handicrafts by craftsmen and visitors of tourist villages. The location of the site is an empty land area of approximately 20,000m². From several facts, the issues and goals that have been analyzed appear a red thread which is then used as the design theme, "When Nature Meet Art". The intention is to express the identity of the natural beauty of the Brajan Bamboo Tourism Village and the bamboo handicrafts produced. The design approach uses Localism to manifest buildings towards the environment in the realm of tradition, culture & social. So that the resulting design is able to realize a tourist area that is able to synergize between buildings with natural, cultural, and local wisdom comprehensively.

Abstract

Nowadays evidence-based design in the hospital design process is increasingly needed in making design decisions. This process provides an opportunity for architects to be able to find new solutions in anticipating various problems related to architectural aspects. One of the problems that exist in the hospital building types is the need to accommodate change. The change referred to in this case is a change in the architecture of the building's configuration. The existence of change requires a flexible and adaptive architectural design. Change provides an opportunity to grow and improve but also provides chance for problems. In this case the problem faced is the tendency of the need for spatial changes both due to their capacity and function. the research aims to identify the form of change as an initial step in the design stage. The method used is a literature study and case study at a public hospital in Surabaya to determine the trends in the form of changes that generally occur. Based on the results obtained there are five types of changes, namely Volume, service lines, Patient mix and standard of care, Size and Medical Discovery, and three types of changes that can occur in hospital architecture, namely improvisation, Building changes, Expansion Building (Building Extension). The trends in the types and forms of change in the two hospitals are Volume and improvisation.

Abstract

The meaning of space is one aspect of a successful public space which is seen by social interaction between users of the space. Existence of social interaction in residential areas as living spaces with a relatively high density and proximity can support the vitality of urban areas. The purpose of this study is to obtain a relationship between the formation of public space and the activities of the inhabitant or community, especially in riverbank settlements. Qualitative research methods are used to get a real picture of the situation or setting in the public spaces based on interpretations of direct observation. Researchers' observations are based on a literature review of open space and people's behavior in the public spaces. As part of the process of understanding the facts, street survey techniques were carried out in three open spaces in the Manggar settlement area to determine the pattern of space user activity in terms of penetration, action patterns, behavior mechanisms, and welfare. The results showed that public open space was formed through routine activities of the community naturally, through the process of selecting places close to work access.

Abstract

Kampung Improvement Program in Surabaya is a program that focus on improving housing and settlements based on sustainable development. One of them is by the existence of thematic tourism kampung development that has cultural values both tangible and intangible. The development of this tourism kampung has a positive goal to improve the socio-economic welfare of the village community. But on the other hand, there was a change in the function and meaning of the kampung from a settlement system with low social accessibility to an open settlement for public. Changes in activity can also affect the people’s sense of place perception. This research strategy used is a mixed method that combines qualitative and quantitative research. Quantitative data through questionnaires were analyzed with cross tabulation techniques and qualitative data with literature studies and in-depth interviews which were then triangulated to obtain the final synthesis of research. The results show that the change has a positive effect on the inhabitant’s sense of place in term of activity. The sense of place itself is closely related to the level of community participation and sustainability in kampung development. This research has an important contribution to the development of the sense of place’s theory which can be a direction for the trilogy of settlement development such as government, private parties and local communities in determining the concept of sustainable tourism village development, especially in the city of Surabaya

Abstract

Conservation of cultural heritage area in Gresik has been implemented since 2009. The conservation process includes documentation, classification, and physical improvement. However, damage, change, and quality degradation in heritage area are still occurred. One of revitalized area in Gresik is Kampung Kemasan. The phenomena that emerge today is that the revitalization in Kampung Kemasan is deemed inadequate either to trigger the revival of heritage area in larger scale or to avoid the quality degradation of its surrounding heritage area. Therefore, this research aimed to find a solution of this problem by proposing design that focused on development of Kampung Kemasan buffer zone. This study used a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected through community participation in order to mapping the region's potential, observation, and spatial interpreting. The spatial interpreting in this case is the interpretation of the character space formed in buffer zone. After all the data was obtained, it was analyzed by using the overlay method to obtain spaces that would be planned further. Results of the research are a buffer zone planning with design intervention on street furniture and pedestrian way that reinforces the image or the theme of the cultural heritage area.

Abstract

The construction of the MERR II-C highway is a series of projects in the Surabaya City Government connecting Gunung Anyarto Juanda. The impact of road construction is the splitting of the densely populated of kampong Gunung Anyar. The characteristics of the kampong penetrated by the road construction are formal and informal kampong. The sporadic character of the informal kampong is clearly visible from the debris of the remaining buildings, while the kampong formal is also visible from the neatly arranged character. At this time the character of the building trying to find identity because the character of informal kampong can still be detected but the influence of trade and service functions in MERR II-A and MERR II-B have begun to be seen. So that this research is considered important to determine the character of the building that appears the impact of the construction of the road MERR II-C. In mapping the character of the building using the place making approach, so it can know the building's character. The results showed that the character of the building formed was the character of commercial, service and residential buildings. Many new commercial buildings are found which are modifications between residential and commercial. Meanwhile a new communal space appeared to replace the communal space that had been lost.
