Abstract

The distillation and analysis of wintergreen oil. Wintergreen oil is obtained by steam distillation of herbaceous plant of Gaultheria sp. The main compound of wintergreen oil is methyl salycilate which is used in pharmaceutical, perfume and fragrance, food and beverages industries. Methyl salycilate is also made synthetically by esterification reaction between methanol and salycilic acid with concentrated sulfuric acid as catalytic agent. So far, Indonesia still impor wintergreen oil, meanwhile at the local farmer level wintergreen oil is produced by using traditional distillation methode. Wintergreen plant growth at the highland. The experiment was conducted on the distillation wintergreen of large leaf type from Dieng Wonosobo Central Java, from Gunung Gede West Java and small leaf type from Sukamulya West Java. The oil characteristis produced was evaluated and compare to the characteristics of local oil, imported and synthetic oil. The result showed that the oil yield of large leaf type from Dieng Wonosobo is 0.80 %, from Gunung Gede is 1,20 %, small leaf type is 0,05 % and local distillation is  0,10 %. The methylsalycilate content of those oils are 97,41 %, 85,18 %, 38,20 % and 82,23 % respectively. The imported oil and synthetic oil have 98,40 % and 97,00 % methylsalycilate content. In general the oil characteristics of large leaf type from Dieng Wonosobo is almost the same to imported oil and meet the Indonesian National Standard.

Abstract

Shoots Multiplication, Rooting, and Acclimatization of Gynura procumbensThe research was performance to obtain shoots multiplication, rooting and acclimati-zation of Gynura procumbens was conducted    January  2004 to May 2005 at the Laboratory of Tissue Culture of Gremplasm and Breeding Division. This research was conducted within two steps, i.e. 1) : Shoots multiplication  in : MS + BA (0; 0,1; 0,3 and 0,5 ) mg/l; 2) rooting and acclimatization. Explants were culture on rooting medium MS + IAA (0,1; 0,3); MS + IBA  (0,1; 0,3) or NAA (0,1 and 0,3) mg/l. Acclimatization were performanced on the two kinds of media i.e. dung manure + soil (1 : 1) or husk + soil (1 : 1). Rooting and shoots multiplication were arranged in completely randomized design, with 10 replications and 2 explants for each bottle. Acclimatization was arranged in randomized-block design with 10 replications and 1 plantlet for each treatment. The results showed the best medium for multiplication shoot was MS-free hormone with 5,4 shoots, 2 months after cultured. The highest number of roots was obtained in NAA 0,1 mg/l with 9,3/plantet. MS + IBA 0,3 mg/l give the longest roots (9,58 cm) and IAA 0,1 mg/l the highest number of leaf (12/plantet). Interaction between the source medium and acclimatization medium was observed however, there was no significantly difference between IAA 0,1 mg/l and IBA 0,1 mg/l in number of shoots and long shoots (5,2 and 5,01 cm).

Abstract

Pests Of Patchouli Plant And Their DamageGenerally, patchouli is still cultivated traditionally in Indonesia. Improved technology such as pest and disease control methods, is  needed. Observation of  pests on patchuoli was carried out at Sukamulya experimental garden  from Agustus 2004 to January 2005. Further research was carried out at the laboratory and greenhouse of the Indonesian Spice and Medicinal Crops Research Institute to examine the damage of the patchouli plant due to the main insect attack. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design, with 6 treatments and 4 replications. The experiment used one month-old patchouly seedlings of Sidikalang variety and the main insect (third instar grub) The white grub was invested on pathouli seedling. Each plant was invested with  0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, grubs as treatments. The results showed that grasshopper (Valanga sp), aphids (Myzus persicae), termite (Coptotermes sp), snail (Achatina sp) and white grub (Exopholis  hypoleuca) attack the patchouly plant with low up to high damages.  It was observed that  the grub is a dominant pest which  attacked  1.800  out of 15.000 patchouli plants  at Sukamulya experimental garden. Treatments grubs on patchouli seedlings at one, two, three, four and five grubs/polybag caused death on the seedlings  at 14, 13, 10, 7 and 7 days after investation, repectively. While the control seedlings were still alive until the end of the experiment.

Abstract

Effect of soil cultivation on growth and yield of curcuma (Curcuma aeroginosa) as intercrops between Nias yellow dwarf coconutThe growth and yield of intercrops  between coconut beside affected by mikroclimate condition certainly affected by distribution of coconut roots. It can delay the developmant of intercrops root, more over if soil cultivation not right. This experiment to investigate the effect of soil cultivation technic on growth and yield of curcuma as intercrops under Dwarf coconut was used at Research Station for Intercrops Plantation,  Pakuwon, Parungkuda, Sukabumi, West Java,  beginning from October 2001 until  August  2002.  Randomized Complete Block Design with 4 treatments and  6  replications was used  in this study. The Fourth of treatment are : (1). P0 (control / without cultivation), (2). P1 (cultivated  totally), (3). P2 (cultivated of plant rows), and (4) P3 (by making seedling bed). Coconut variety that used is this experiment are Nias Yellow Dwarf (GKN)  at  22 years old and planting distance of 7 x 7 m square  system.  Curcuma were planted about 1 m from coconut with 0,6 x 0,6 m spacing, effectively about  2400 m2. The parameter were observed ose : plant height, number of young plant, number of leaf, diameter and yield of highest main and branch rhizomes. From sample of 30 plants/plot.  Result showed that soil cultivation technic had effect on growth and yield of curcuma.  Totally soil cultivation technic gave a highest main and branch rhizomes, about  10,6  and  10,9  ton/ha respectively.

Abstract

Effect of Paclobutrazol On The Growth of In Vitro Concerved Purple Ginger (Zingiber purpureum Roxb)Effect of paclobutrazol on the growth of Purple Ginger (Zingiber purpureum  Roxburgh) conserved in vitro were studied in the Laboratory of Breeding and gremplasm of Indonesian Spice and Medicinal Crops Research Instituted, from February to November 2003. Sterile shoots of Purple Ginger were used as explants sources. The treatments evaluated were paclobutrazol 0 (control); 1; 2; 3 mg/l and arranged in completely randomized design with 10 replications. The aim of research was to study the effect of paclobutrazol on the growth of Purple Ginger conserved in vitro.  Results showed that at 5 months of culture age, paclobutrazol significantly reduced the number of shoots, height number of leaves and number of roots. The higher the concentration of paclobutrazol, the lower the number of shoots, leaves and roots and the shorter the root of plantlets observed. Application of paclobutrazol at concentration of 2 or 3 mg/l could prolong the conservation period up to 9 months. Fur there more it was revealed that paclobutrazol application produced more vigorous plantlets.
