Jurnal of Ide Bahasa focuses on language, literature, and language learning with various dimensions of languages all over the world. The journal serves as a medium of ideas exchange and research findings from various traditions of learning that have interacted in a scholarly manner. The journal follows peer review policy. The paper is sent to many reviewers (the experts in the respective field) to review the paper in the light of journal guidelines and features of a quality research paper. For papers which require changes, the same reviewers will ensure that the quality of the revised paper is acceptable. This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Abstract

Euphemism is a more polite expression to substitute the rude expression which assume as the harsh or offensive words. This expression is often used in communication both spoken or written such as, the word ‘die’ is changed into ‘pass away’. The euphemistic expressions are also found on both printed or online media as newspaper. A newspaper has the power of influencing the reader’s mind in delivering many kinds of news or events in daily life. In this developing communication era, the preference and the use of the proper words in a newspaper is a must. The journalist is demanded to be able to deliver the news by using the polite and formal words instead of the offensive words. This research aimed to describe the use of euphemistic expressions on the online newspaper namely Express which was about the marriage life of the Late Princes lady Diana and The Prince Charles from United Kingdom. This was a descriptive research and Warren’s theory as cited in (Beizaee & Mirza, 2016) was used to analyze the use of euphemistic expressions based on semantic innovation and formal innovation found in some articles on Expressonline newspaper. The data is in the form of words and phrases and in analyzing the data, the researcher used the pragmatic referential method which interpret the meaning of euphemistic expressions based on the context. The results of this research are the types of semantic innovation used included particularization, implication and metaphor, meanwhile for the formal innovation included foreign words, derivation. The most dominant for semantic and formal innovation are implication and derivation. The researcher conclude that from the results, it can be said that the express online newspaper has done the good effort to deliver the news about the phenomenal marriage life of the late Princess Lady Diana and The Prince Charles by using euphemistic expressions so far.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menguji hipotesis tentang hirarki kebutuhan maslow terhadap kepribadiaan sosok Aparna sebagai karakter utama didalam cerita Hell-Heaven karya Jhumpa Lahiri. Maslow merumuskan 5 level hirarki kebutuhan yang dimiliki setiap orang yaitu; fisiologi, keamanan, Cinta dan keberadaan, Penghargaan, dan Aktualisasi diri. Kebutuhan Akan cinta berada pada level ketiga dari tingkatan tersebut. Teori ini menganggap bahwa keseluruhan dari seseorang terus menerus termotivasi oleh satu atau lebih kebutuhan dimana orang mempunyai potensi untuk tumbuh menuju kesehatan psikologis yaitu aktualisasi diri. Dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif serta analisis yang koheren, penelitian ini mencoba untuk menjawab dua variabel riset yaitu pengungkapan tentang ketakterpenuhan tokoh Aparna akan kebutuhan cinta serta sebab dan akibat atas ketakterpenuhan tersebut. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Teori Hirarki Kebutuhan Maslow juga bisa diterapkan untuk menganalisis kepribadian tokoh Aparna. Terbukti, ketika seseorang memiliki ketakterpenuhan dalam satu level tertentu maka ia akan termotivasi untuk memenuhi kebutuhan tersebut sebelum memenuhi tingkat kebutuhan lain. Ketakterpenuhan tersebut juga bisa memicu sebuah penyakit yang disebut patologi bahkan sampai ke metapatologi.

Abstract

The problem of the study is 1) what are the types of errors made by the students in changing active voice into passive voice of simple past tense . 2) what are the types of errors dominantly made by the students in changing active voice into passive voice of simple past tense. 3) Why are the students make error in changing active voice into passive voice of simple past tense. The objectives of the study are to find out a: 1) To find out the types of error are made by the students in changinga active voice into passive voice of simple past tense, 2) To find out the dominantly types of errors are made by the students in changing active voice into passive voice of simple past tense, 3) To find out the reasons of errors are made by the students in changing active voice into passive voice of simlpe past. Method of the study is qualitative research. The total number of students’ error in changing active voice into passive voice of simple past tense is 349 errors. Which is devided into 43 (12,32%) errors of omission, 10 (2,86%) errors of addition, 154 (44,12%) errors of misformation, and 142 (40,68%) errors of misordering. The dominant types of error are made by the students in changing active voice into passive voice of simple past tense is misformation 154 errors (44,12%). The students do errror in changing active voice into passive voice of simple past tense because the students do not know how to change the formula from active voice into passive voice of simple past tense. The students sometimes are bored with conventional method.

Abstract

As the students coming to senior high schools becomes more diverse, English teachers will bear a larger responsibility to perform a better teaching with different cultural backgrounds. This research illustrates how ethnographic studies with awareness and responses of local wisdom are implemented and performed by the English teachers during teaching and learning process in the classroom. The research investigates how teachers perform their awareness and responses of local wisdom in their teaching English with three specific purposes: 1) to explore how the teachers perform communicative language teaching with their awareness and responses of local cultures; 2) to explore the objects of awareness in their teaching services that could help the learners develop their communicative competence; and 3) to explore the ways the teachers respond to the learners during the teaching-learning process. The researcher uses a descriptive qualitative method that aims at exploring and describing the current issues that may probably occur while conducting the research. To gain the data, the researcher uses observation and semi-structured interview.

Abstract

This study investigated the conjunctive relation use theorized by Halliday & Matthiessen (2014) in the EFL learners’ writings of Putera Batam University and articles Newsweek magazines printed in 1998. This descriptive qualitative study found out the frequency of the semantic categories of conjunctive relation namely adversative, additive, temporal, and causal types used to link the words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and paragraphs semantically and logically in both writings. Method of identification is used to collect the data from 42 essay writings and 24 articles. This study used distributional method to analyze whereas they were selecting, sorting, categorizing, and differencing ways to get the each type of conjunction. Results of the study showed that the EFL learners’ writings appeared and as the most frequent and but was the most frequent appearance in Newsweek’s articles. Newsweek’s articles used 33 different items of conjunctive relation meanwhile the EFL learners’ writings used 26 different items of conjunctive relation. The adversative type (48, 91%) is the dominant frequency in the Newsweek’s articles and the additive type is dominant frequency in the EFL learners’ writings. EFL learners did not apply a various types of conjunctive relations but the Newsweek’s articles did. In addition, EFL learners used too over and as found 546 times in their writings.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji respon tidak santun terhadap postingan di instagram. Instagram adalah media komunikasi dunia maya yang memungkinkan pengguna bahasa untuk melakukan interaksi dengan lebih dari dua partisipan. Dunia maya khususnya media sosial seperti instagram memberikan kebebasan kepada netizen untuk mengekspresikan apa yang mereka rasakan/inginkan termasuk memberikan respon apapun terhadap postingan orang lain seperti postingan Donald Trump, Presiden Amerika. Kebebasan dalam mengekspresikan ide ini cenderung membuat netizen mengabaikan norma-norma kebahasaan sehingga memberikan respon yang tidak santun terhadap postingan orang lain. Ketidaksantunan seorang netizen akan membuat netizen lainnya kehilangan muka. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti akan mendeskripsikan penggunaan strategi ketidaksantunan berkaitan dengan respon penolakan terhadap postingan Donald Trump di instagram. Sumber data penelitian adalah semua tuturan yang ada pada kolom komentar di instagram Donald Trump. Data penelitian dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan metode simak. Teknik yang digunakan adalah simak bebas libat cakap, dimana peneliti hanya mengamati saja dan tidak terlibat langsung dalam percakapan tersebut. Kemudian, data dianalisis dengan menggunakan metode padan pragmatik. Pada metode padan pragmatik, unsur penentunya adalah mitra tutur. Pemaknaan setiap tuturan didasarkan pada konteks tuturan tersebut. Selanjutnya, hasil analisis data dijelakan dengan menggunakan metode informal, yaitu pemaparan dengan menggunakan kalimat bukan dengan tanda atau lambang. Dari hasil analisis ditemukan bahwa dari empat strategi ketidak santunan hanya empat strategi yang digunakan dalam memberikan respon terhadap postingan Donald Trump di instagram. Strategi yang tidak digunakan adalah withhold politeness. Hal ini sangat beralasan karena biasanya strategi tersebut hanya dapat digunakan dalam percakapan lisan, sedangkan data penelitia ini diambil dari percakapan tertulis di media sosial. Di samping itu, temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa strategi ketidak santunan yang paling sering digunakan adalah positive impoliteness. Budaya penggunaan bahasa langsung atau terang-terangan menjadi alasan kenapa strategi ini paling sering digunakan termasuk penggunaan kata-kata tabu.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the form and function of phatic words in Malay language of Kepulauan Riau. Phatic word is the word that does not have any information or ideas in it. This study was a qualitative study. To collect the data, it used some informants. The informants were the Malay teenagers who lived in Batam. Then, informants were interviewed and recorded during the interview session. From the data, it was found some phatic categories such as phatic particles (lah, kan, pun, sih, nah, kah), phatic words (halo, ayok, ya, yak, iye, yeh, ye, tu, tuh, cam, macam, gitu, oi, wei, eh, weh), phatic phrases (assalamualaikum, insyaallah), and phatic integration (cam tu lah, gitu lah, cam.. sih, nah gitu). It was also found the phatic function such as the way to break, to prove, to confirm, to affirm, to convince, to start and end the conversation.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are (1)to find out the realization of the principle of politeness in learning the Education Profession, and (2) to find out the principle of politeness that is dominantly used by students in discussions. The population in the study was all students who took the professional education courses in the German language education program and Christian religious education at the teaching learning fakulty Universitas HKBP Nommensen Pematangsiantar. The sample in this study is the entire population.This study used descriptive qualitative method. This research is a qualitative research that relies on phenomenology. This is because this research examines social phenomena (human actions) including the use of language.Data from the results of this study indicate that (1) The politeness principle used in the discussion activities in the teaching professional learning in Christianity education study programs and German language education there are 92 speeches. There are also 13 wisdom utterances, 2 generosity maxims, 3 praise utterances maxims, 1 speech modest maxim, 10 maxims of agreement, and 2 utterances of praise. Language politeness in discussions in the teaching profession is polite. Because most of them use polite speech in accordance with the principle of politeness.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to look for a significant influence on the application of using Wattpad as learning activities on students' ability to write descriptive texts. The main consideration is because an educator in this case should used interesting instructional media, particularly to teach writing so that the potential of students can be developed optimally. Meanwhile the development of writing of English Department Students of Putera Batam University is still relatively low in quality. Wattpad is an applications which provides the students an opportunity to write, promote and help their writing reach acroos the world. The design of the research was quasi-experimental research that want to find out the effect of using Wattpad towards students writing ability. To know students’ writing ability, this research uses writing test as Instrument. There are three pre tests and post tests. The pre-test were used to see students writing ability before having treatment and posttest are used to see the differences on students writing ability after giving treatments. The subjects were the students of English Department of Putera Batam University who took writing class. The data found that using Wattpad has a significant effect on student’s writing ability. This conclusion can be seen based on the analysis that has been done where the obtained Z score was smaller than critical value, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Hi) was accepted. So, based on the results , it was concluded that there was statistically diffrence between the pre-test and post-test score at the 0.05 levels. It means that teaching writing by using wattpad gives significant effect on students’ writing ability

Abstract

The study focuses on the influence of one of the prominent figures in American romanticism, Ralph Emerson. By applying the Hall’s Theory of Representation this study intends to identify the role of Self-Reliance in American culture and the impact of Emerson’s philosophy toward American life And now people all over the world have recognized his work Self-Reliance (1841) as the inspiration in many aspects of life. His hard work, ethical teaching and spirit have become the most important ideas in shaping independent American society. Through his literary works, Emerson has conveyed important messages to the world on shaping personalities.
