Abstract

English is an international language in this world, this statement is real, therefore almost every single person in this world is common with English, moreover, each person is capable of speaking and writing two languages well in English and in the mother tongue. The people in those conditions are called bilingual, they usually switch a language to another in their social life, that is code-switching. In this occasion, this research focuses on analyzing code switching used by Sarah Sechan In "Sarah Sechan" Program On NET TV, using a theory of code-switching adopted from Miller (2003), Crystal (1987), Romaine (1992), Sauders (1988), and Skiba (1997). The aims of this research are 1). to describe and analyzes the types of code switching and finding the most dominant of them, and 2). to describe the reasons for Sarah Sechan code switch her language in "Sarah Sechan" program on NET TV.This research uses descriptive qualitative approach whereas the data are collected from the utterances of Sarah Sechan in "Sarah Sechan" program on NET TV in five top video on September 2018 which are analyzed by adopted from the theory of Miller (2003), Crystal (1987), Romaine (1992), Sauders (1988), and Skiba (1997).The result of this research shows that there are three types of code-switching used by Sarah Sechan in "Sarah Sechan" program on NET TV: intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching, and tag switching. In detail, there are intra-sentential switchings, inter-sentential switchings, and tags switching. There are several reasons of Sarah Sechan code switch her language: talking about a particular topic, quoting somebody else, showing empathy about something, interjection, repetition used for clarification, expressing group identity, and intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor.This research only analyses types and reasons for code-switching, therefore it will be more interesting for the next researcher to analyze it by using another theory of code-switching. It is suggested for the next researcher to use other object or data such as youtuber or selebgram as the data source.

Abstract

Become one of the English skill in which needs the intention or behavioral dimension habit and ability for those who always drill theirself to regularly write, writing skill need to be taught and learned intensively in the colleagues and universities. Consequentely, writing skill become one of the compulsory subject in the English Department, Especially the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in Muhammadiyah University of Sidoarjo. Ornamentally crafted with Academic Writing subject at the fifth semester, the curriculum says that students proposed to be able to write argumentative essay. To analyze the students skill of argumentative essay, the qualitative research is made by using the theory from Oshima and Hogue (2006). The results show that: 1)the crtical thinking of making the argumetative essay from the students are that the students are able to stand up on a side of the student’s point of view and make sure the reader (s) that the student’s arguments are right, it is supported by solid reason and solid evidence. 2) the students are able to make make sure the reader (s) that the student’s arguments are right, it is supported by solid reason but with weak evidence, and some grammatical error. Last 3) that the students are able to make make sure the reader (s) that the student’s arguments are right, but it is not supported by solid reason and solid evidence. Key words: argumentative essay, block pattern, point by point pattern.

Abstract

This research was conducted to improving students’ speaking skill through storytelling unit in action for the EFL students in Indonesia. This teaching process provides the package in teaching speaking using pictures in series to be applied in teaching learning process. The research design of this research is descriptive qualitative. The data used in applying the creative strategy in teaching speaking, the procedure in teaching learning process are described in details in this research. This strategy was design for the 7 th graders of junior high school students.

Abstract

This study was intended to apply process-genre approach to solve the problems of the students of Class IIB of STKIP PGRI Blitar in the academic year of 2011/2012 in writing a descriptive paragraph. The research designed used in this study was collaborative Classroom Action Research. To get the data, the researcher used several instruments (e.g. observation sheet, and questionnaire). The finding showed that the students of Class IIB could write their descriptive paragraphs much better.

Abstract

WALL-E movie is one of a science fiction animated tells us the audience about global warming issues. Symbols are such as objects, signals, gestures, signs, and words that help people to understand the world. Related to this research, the aim is for interpreting and analyzing the symbols used in the WALL-E movie. This is qualitative research. This research material derived from several sources and transcripts related to WALL-E movie are classified are used as a staple whereas the research used an interpretation theory related to the symbols used in this movie then analyzing it all. Throughout the movie, there are symbols with deeper meanings. These results indicate that there are six symbols in this movie. WALL-E movie spotlight the broken environmental management which is done by human beings themselves. In order to clean the earth, the human was replaced by robots. The moral issue in WALL-E movie can be reflected in real life, relation to the structuring and environmental management with the interests of the environment in any action relating to all elements of the environment.

Abstract

This study takes Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye as its subject and white beauty standard as its topic. It solely covers the three statements of problems that aim to reveal how white beauty standard is exposed to Pauline, how Pauline shows her acceptance to white beauty standard, and how Pauline’s acceptance to white beauty standard affects her self-esteem. The first statement of problem is answered by using the concept of white beauty standard. Then, the second statement of problem is answered by showing the evidences of Pauline actions as the form of her acceptance of white beauty standard. Last, the third statement of problem is answered by using the self-concept inventory which is then supported by the concept of cognitive distortion to reveal Pauline’s self-esteem. The analysis of this study reveals that the white beauty standard is exposed to Pauline through beauty images and education, both formal and informal that exists in her society. Pauline gladly accepts the white beauty standard through the lifestyle, beauty images, behavior, and education which she practices, imitates, and adjusts from her surroundings. Her acceptance of white beauty standard then destroys her self-concept that is proven by the great numbers of negative item shown in her self-description. The negative self-concept then leads her to having a low self-esteem, as proven by the distorted ways of thinking she practices such as overgeneralization, global labeling, filtering, polarized thinking, self-blame, personalization, control fallacies, and emotional reasoning. Keywords: ideal beauty image, self-description, self-concept, distorted thinking, lifestyle, education

Abstract

This study is conducted to get better understanding regarding the role of family, particularly the role of mother towards personality of the child. In holding her role as an adopted mother for Estella, Miss Havisham adopts the type of parenting style in which she fully dominates and eleminates the rights of Estella. Miss Havisham has an intention to do the twisted revenge on men. She uses Estella as her media of taking revenge. She puts her ambition on Estella without considering Estella’s desire. Her own disappointment leading her to foster an adoptive daughter under her control. The writer interests to discuss more detail whether Miss Havisham’s parenting style can influence to the personality of Estella or not. In Writing the thesis, the writer uses literary approach which is linked with descriptive qualitative. After collecting the data, the writer classifies and clarifies the data which are related to the topic being discussed. The finding of this study shows that there is parent involvement process in forming Estella’s thought, identity and achievement. The writer concludes that Miss Havisham’s parenting style is not the best way in parent involvement process because it generates the negative impacts on Estella’s personality. Key words : Role, Parenting Style, and Motive

Abstract

In the play, Kate, the main female character, is described as a young wealthy and beautiful woman, but she is not considered as a virtuous woman because of her shrewishness, Therefore, the researcher eager to learn and discuss the significance of the idea of an ideal wife in this play since it may show what kind of behavior that has been associated with virtue in a woman to be an ideal wife. It may reveal how a wife should behave that she deserves to be considered as an ideal wife. Then while analyzing Shakespeare's the taming of the shrew the researcher find out that Petruchio’s treatment of his wife who is considered as a shrew implies a process of education that is aimed at teaching Kate to be a real woman. Thus, the order is achieved. The perpose of this research is the researcher going to discuss Petruchio's reasons in marrying Kate and to discuss the way Pertruchio changes Kate.

Abstract

This paper is aimed to discuss the importance of selecting the appropriate texts and tasks for reading comprehension. The different text offers opportunities for different kinds of exploitation and tasks related to the text. The more exploitable the text is, the more tasks can be varied. The activities include ones for pre-reading, whilst reading and post-reading forms of activities. Most of the tasks use multiple choice forms of questioning since the language and the content of the text is fairly challenging for SLTP students. The tasks themselves take the form of comprehension practices and a communicative task at the end.

Abstract

The focus of learning English as an ESL student is able to communicate in English. The communicated competence refers to listening, speaking, reading and writing. Based on the other research, as an ESL student, writing is often considered a difficult English skill. Some techniques are needed by a teacher to solve the writing difficulties. One of the problem solving is writing a diary. Additionally, students often make a mistake in writing. Therefore, this research was to know whether there is a significant influence on students' writing skill by writing a diary in recount text for junior high school students. The method of this research was a quasi-experimental method which is the treatment held in several meetings as they need and eighty minutes for each meeting. In collecting the data, the researcher used the instrument in written test questions. After tried out, the instrument was used for the pre-test and post-test. Pre-test used to find out students’ writing ability before treatment. Then post-test used to find out students’ writing ability after treatment, then the researcher analyzed the data. The population of this research was students volunteer in eighth grade, which consisted of 20 students. The sample taken from the announcement in social media, it means that the researcher makes an announcement for the teacher who wants their students to be selected as a sample in this research. It was taken by using randomly that is cluster random sampling technique.Based on the data analysis, it was found that the result is the students’ writing skill had significant influence. The conclusion of this research is writing a diary was effective to influence the students’ writing skill. It is clear that there is any significant influence of using writing diary technique towards students’ writing skill. It is better to use this technique in teaching writing for the teachers and other readers because this technique is interesting and enjoyable when it is applied.
