Abstract

As a foreign language, English is hardly ever used in daily practice at schools. It is only spoken fluently and actively in certain international schools in Indonesia, such as British International School and Jakarta Multicultural School, in which the medium of instruction is English. Indonesian learners are not familiar in English, so that they use it passively. As a consequence, more learners make mistakes in speaking, especially when they are constructing questions in conversations. Accordingly, this study aims at analyzing the common mistakes produced by students in constructing questions. This study employs descriptive qualitative methodology in which the writer describes the results of the analysis that show learners do make mistakes in constructing questions in declarative, yes/no interrogative, alternative interrogatives, wh- interrogatives, and double interrogatives form. It happens because they are not aware of the proper forms of questions, and also they do not practice English frequently. Therefore, mistakes appear due to these factors.

Abstract

This study aim at analyzing students problem in translating text in English into Bahasa Indonesia as the target language. Translating from English to Indonesia as target language is also a problem for students. There are a lot of things must be considered by students so that the result of translation equivalent with target language message. The differences of phrasal verb and collocation in English with the target language meaning may cause difference information obtained by the reader, and as a consequences, the information might mislead the reader. STBA is one of campus in Pontianak which provides students with English skill and translation skill. In doing translation, students need to think so many aspects when translating the sentences or the conversation into their native language in order to the result of the translation sounds natural. The method in this writing is descriptive method, and the writer describe students' problems in translating text from English into Bahasa Indonesia as a target language and gathering information related to the problems faced through interview. The result of the observation shows that the difference between English phrasal verb and collocations with Indonesia equivalent words become the main problem in giving the meaning in the target language, therefore students need to understand the category and the function in phrasal verb and collocation in English in order to find equivalent meaning in Indonesian.

Abstract

This paper is written to bring awareness to principals and teachers of schools in West Kalimantan that implementing field trip as one of the options for their learning activities can be very useful and effective to achieve the learning goals. Field trip which is the excursion is an experiential learning which brings many advantages to the students, such as skill improvement, learning motivation, and self – experience on learning. The writer in this paper takes one school which is Sekolah SPK Tunas Bangsa as the school model due to its consistency in implementing the field trip. The writer discusses how the field trip programs have been conducted so far in Sekolah SPK Tunas Bangsa by interviewing the principal. The result shows the enthusiastic in learning, confidence, and independency of students improve highly after implementing the programs. It also confirmed that the learning quality and achievements are much better after conducting field trip programs.

Abstract

This study aims to see the dominant error made by praja IPDN west Kalimantan campus in conversation. In fulfilling these obligations, students of-ten find difficulty in asking in English. The study of dominant error in interrog-ative sentences in of praja IPDN west Kalimantan campus is a way to identify the problems of students in making interrogative sentences so that English con-versation program can run well and praja can ask question to each other with correct questions sentence pattern. The method used in this study is descriptive quaitative and the writer describes dominant error made by praja during the conversation. The data in the form of sentences obtained through list of ques-tions from conversation and interviews to determine the form of errors in making questions. The data obtained is then analyzed to obtain the results of research on the difficulties faced by praja in understanding the interrogative sentences. The results of this study show the most dominant error is in the sentence Yes / No verbs, and followed by Wh-question noun

Abstract

This study focused on describing types and functions of the directive speech act on Dracula's novel. The study used a descriptive qualitative method in which Dracula’s utterances were collected. It has found eighteen of Dracula’s utterances. Out of eighteen utterances, ten utterances were directive speech acts which have a function to stating and commanding, three utterances belong to requesting speech acts, two utterances were questioning, while three utterances belong to prohibiting, asking, and advisories speech act. The data analyzed has proved that there are four functions of directive speech acts based on Levinsons’ principle and three functions based on Allan. It is concluded that the directive speech act is the way how the speaker influences the addressee to do something.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to improve student learning outcomes through the implementation of a phonetic method of memorizing vocabulary in teaching English to fifth grade students of SDN 3 Sungai Pinyuh. The subjects in this study are 22 students who are in the fifth grade in the academic year 2016 - 2017. Furthermore, the object of this study is the implementation of phonetic methods to improve learning outcomes of English. The steps that the author did was creating action planning, action, observation and reflection. This research is a form of class action research. The research instrument consists of observation, testing, and documentation. The successful implementation of a phonetic method on subjects known by their English learning outcome of prior actions, cycle I and cycle II.

Abstract

This study concerned with translation study, which is the translation ideology used in the translation of cultural terms found in Andrea Hirata’s novel Laskar Pelangi into The Rainbow Troops. The aims of the study were to describe the cultural terms category found in the novel, to find the most frequently translation technique applied by the translator in translating the cultural terms found, and to analyze the ideology of translation applied by the translator in translating the novel. The study used was a qualitative descriptive method. The unit analysis of this research was the cultural term words and phrases, obtained from the original novel and the translation novel. The result of the study showed that the most frequently translation technique applied is compensation (18.08%). Based on the techniques of translation used, which mostly tend to Target Language, it can be concluded that the translation ideology used by the translator is domestication ideology. It could be also concluded that by applying this domestication ideology, the translator made the foreign-sounding languages and cultures found in the Laskar Pelangi novel, transparent to the target language reader with something equal and equivalent, so the work of translation is acceptable, and easy to understand.

Abstract

ESL students always encounter the issue of solving complicated problems in learning English. Various problem may occur during the learning process including speaking, listening, writing and reading. The most complicated issues are often faced by the students who learn English for the specific purpose for instance English for law, English for tourism, English for business or English for medical purpose. The prob-lems may dealing with types of expression, vocabularies, standard and formal struc-tures that will be used most of all in a specific field. This purpose of this study was to implement the problem solution strategy in the medical field especially for midwifery students in Akademi Kebidanan Panca Bakti Pontianak. The midwifery students were trained to be able to solve the problems regarding with the health issues. This study constitute an attempt to identify the common problems and how to solve by us-ing problem solution strategy. The most common issues found were dealing with terminologies and the risk signs during pregnancy. The result showed that by using problem solution strategy, students were successful in solving the health problems. They were able elaborate the way how to deal with the health sign during pregnancy for instance the risk sign dealing with weighing the mother, the risk sign if a mother has a high fever, the risk sign if a mother has a high blood pressure, the risk sign if a mother has an abnormal pulse rate and the risk sign if a mother grows fast or slowly. By understanding how to solve the problems, the midwifery students will be more professional.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of students regarding the use of Google Classroom in learning activities. The subject of this study is the seventh semester students as many as 54 students of English Literature Study Program at STBA Pontianak. The results were described using descriptive statistics, the average of students gives a positive response. For the usefulness indicator the results indicated that, the highest is Google Classroom is very useful for learning (88.51%) in the excellent category, the middle is Google Classroom makes learning effective (80.37%) in the excellent category, and the lowest is Google Classroom can improves student performances and increases student activity 70% was included in the good category. For the Google Classroom ease of use indicator the results indicated that, the highest is Google Classroom easy to use (91.85%) in the excellent category, the middle is Google Classroom easy to learn (91.48%) in the excellent category, and the lowest is Google Classroom makes learning flexible and helpful in the learning process (77.4%) was included in the good category. For the indicator of satisfaction the results indicated that, the highest is Students can use the Google Classroom according to what they want (92.60%) in the excellent category, the middle is the application is amazing (91.11%) in the excellent category, and the lowest is Google Classroom convenient and comfortable to use (87.40%) in the excellent category

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the extent to which multimedia technology can be applied in the process of teaching and learning English and affect student performance. Data obtained from classroom observations and interviews. The analysis shows how the implementation of multimedia or educational applications provides an improvement in the teaching and learning process. The implementation of multimedia particularly educational applications in computer gives students the opportunity to practice using English, as well as increasing students' interest in participating in the classroom activities. In the process of integrating multimedia technologies, the development of the students' skills can be seen. In short, this study shows that the implementation of technology raises a positive impact on students in the learning process in the classroom.
