Abstract

This qualitative study focuses on the discussion of effective teaching strategies to encourage young adolescent learners to speak English during the classroom activity. The purpose of this study is to present the speaking strategies used by young adolescent English teachers in Pontianak to motivate their students to speak English in their lesson. The participants involved five teachers in different level of education: elementary and lower secondary level, who were selected randomly to minimalize subjectivity to the research. The data were gathered by using open – ended interview. The results of the interview were described and narrated. The results showed that group work and drilling were frequently implemented by the teachers in their classroom to encourage their learners to speak. They confirmed that group work and drilling were appropriate to the level of English speaking skills of their learners.Keywords: speaking, group work, drilling.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan analisis kebutuhan mata kuliah Bahasa Inggris (ESP) untuk mahasiswa kejuruan yang berfokus pada analisis target dan kebutuhan pembelajaran. Data diperoleh dari kuesioner dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian berupa analisa target menunjukkan bahwa tujuan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris bagi para mahasiswa Jurusan Gizi adalah agar dapat berkomunikasi menggunakan bahasa inggris secara aktif. Hasil analisa kebutuhan pembelajaran yang diperoleh yaitu mahasiswa membutuhkan kemampuan berbicara secara lancar dan komunikatif dalam rangka persiapan diri memenuhi tututan profesi mereka kedepannya. Hal tersebut menunjukkan bahwa keinginan mahasiswa yang mengarah pada peningkatan kemampuan berbicara (speaking) ini sudah sangat sesuai dengan kebutuhan pasar kerja yang mensyaratkan kemampuan berkomunikasi dalam bahasa Inggris dengan baik. Hasil dari penelitian ini diharapkan akan menjadi referensi untuk menyiapkan silabus dan mengembangkan materi ajar.Kata Kunci: analisis kebutuhan, kebutuhan pembelajaran, kemampuan berbicara

Abstract

AbstrakPenelitian bertujuan untuk mengetahui dan mengidentifikasi minat baca mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Tanjungpura terhadap artikel ilmiah, khususnya jurnal. Penelitian menggunakan metode deskriptif. Subjek penelitian yaitu mahasiswa semester 3 Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Tanjungpura yang berjumlah 109 orang. Kuesioner digunakan sebagai alat pengumpul data penelitian. Teknik analisis data menggunakan analisis deskriptif. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, diperoleh enam dari tujuh indikator minat membaca artikel pada jurnal ilmiah menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris tidak memiliki minat terhadap jurnal dengan persentase 86%. Indikator yang paling menunjukkan ketidakminatan mahasiswa terhadap jurnal adalah tingkat membaca artikel pada jurnal ilmiah menunjukkan 88% dari total responden tidak pernah membaca artikel pada jurnal ilmiah dalam satu semester.Abstract The research aims to determine and identify the interest in reading English Education students of FKIP Tanjungpura University towards scientific articles, especially journals. Research using descriptive methods. The research subjects were 109 semesters 3 students of the English Language Education Study Program at Tanjungpura University. The questionnaire was used as a research data collection tool. Data analysis techniques using descriptive analysis. Based on the results of the analysis, obtained from six of the seven indicators of interest in reading articles in scientific journals show that English Education students have no interest in journals with a percentage of 86%. The indicator that most shows students' lack of interest in journals is the level of reading articles in scientific journals showing 88% of the total respondents never read articles in scientific journals in one semester.

Abstract

This study aimed at designing a multimedia-based product as supplementary material. It is known as VERBHOUSE. The product purposes were to help an English teacher in SMP Negeri 1 Anjongan teach English Vocabulary, especially English action verbs for year-8 students, and find out if it is suitable in supporting the English teachers. The product materials were designed based on “Bahasa Inggris for year-8 students in Junior High School” textbook. Moreover, the researcher gathered the data through an interview and that was supported with open-ended questionnaires. In analyzing the data, the researcher used an internal analysis. The researcher had developed the product within three phases of ADDIE: Analysis, Design, and Development. The researcher conducted the interview and distributed the questionnaire in the Analysis phase. The researcher then started to design the first draft in the second phase. VERBHOUSE consisted of four main menus, House, Exercises, Guide, and Credit. The product contained 40 English action verbs materials, exciting pictures, sounds, video, and provided explicit texts to the user. Furthermore, in the development phase, the researcher used an internal evaluation to measure the product. From the findings, it is indicated that the VERBHOUSE is suitable for classroom use. In short, this study has relatively succeeded in creating multimedia materials for year-8 students as supplementary materials.

Abstract

AbstrakPenelitian bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah penerapan teknik collaborative writing dapat mengembangkan kecerdasan emosional mahasiswa. Penelitian menggunakan metode deskriptif kuantitatif. Alat pengumpul data menggunakan kuesioner berdasarkan pada 5 aspek kecerdasan emosional yang mencakup self-awareness, self-regulation, self-motivation, social awareness, dan social skills. Teknik analisis data dilakukan dengan perhitungan persentase dari butir kuesioner, dilanjutkan dengan interpretasi dan deskripsi data dari persepsi mahasiswa terhadap kecerdasan emosional setelah teknik collaborative writing diterapkan. Subjek penelitian adalah mahasiswa Sekolah Tinggi Bahasa Asing Pontianak yang mengikuti kelas Essay Writing dan Literary Criticism berjumlah 43 orang dan dipilih menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data, terjadi peningkatan kecerdasan emosional mahasiswa setelah diterapkannya teknik collaborative writing yang ditunjukkan dengan peningkatan respons pada aspek kecerdasan emosional. AbstractThis research aimed to find out if the implementation of collaborative writing techniques could develop the emotional intelligence of students. This research used descriptive quantitative method. Data collection tools used a questionnaire based on 5 aspects of emotional intelligence which include self-awareness, self-regulation, self-motivation, social awareness, and social skills. The data were analyzed by calculating the percentages of each questionnaire item, then continued to interpret and describe the implementation of collaborative writing technique. The subjects of this research were 43 students of Sekolah Tinggi Bahasa Asing Pontianak who enrolled in Essay Writing and Literary Criticism classes, with a total of 43 students who were selected using purposive sampling technique. The results of the data analysis indicated that there happened improvements towards the emotional intelligence after collaborative technique was implemented shown by the increase of positive responses on emotional intelligence aspects.

Abstract

This paper aims at encouraging medical students of Poltekkes Pontianak to speak in English by developing a speaking handout as one of the sources for their English subject. The handout is addressed to first semester students as an introduction of English. Speaking skill is chosen because the demands of professional medical workers who are competent in speaking English have increased. In the work-life, medical workers are required to be able to speak in English as an international media of communication for the proof of their professionalism. Therefore, the development of the handout is highly important. The data used to develop the handout is primarily the need analysis results of the previous research. The material development process employs two phases of ADDIE: Design phase and Development phase adapted from Branch (2009) with some pertinent modifications to the contexts and primary data. The complete handout as the final result contains the activities and tasks of speaking English with the clear user’s guides for its users.

Abstract

ABSTRACTCurrent studies report that a teaching practice program is important for pre-service teachers of English in providing real teaching experiences at school. However, since the Covid-19 outbreak, all school activities are transferred to online delivery mode, which led to teaching practice implementation to be conducted online. This transference must cause pre-service teachers to have different teaching practice experiences. Therefore, the study aims to discover pre-service teachers' perceptions regarding their teaching practice experience during the pandemic. This research was conducted to 114 seventh-semester students of the English Education Department of FKIP Pontianak. The methodology was a mixed-method where the quantitative procedure was first done, followed by the qualitative procedure. The data were gathered through questionnaires and interviews. The results indicated that the online teaching practice program brought various experiences resulting in “satisfying” and “unsatisfying” perceptions. In detail, more than 50% of participants agreed that despite the challenging situations they faced during the practice, they found the online teaching practice program beneficial, especially in providing broad teaching insights and experience. Hence, despite limitations to its ways of implementation, teaching practice program tends to shape positive teaching mindset and attitudes for pre-service teachers. ABSTRAKStudi saat ini melaporkan bahwa program praktik mengajar penting bagi calon guru Bahasa Inggris dalam memberikan pengalaman mengajar yang nyata di sekolah. Namun, sejak merebaknya wabah Covid-19, seluruh kegiatan sekolah dialihkan secara online, sehingga pelaksanaan praktik mengajar dilakukan secara online. Pemindahan ini harus menyebabkan para calon guru memiliki pengalaman praktik mengajar yang berbeda. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi calon guru tentang pengalaman praktik mengajar mereka selama pandemi. Penelitian ini dilakukan terhadap 114 mahasiswa semester tujuh pada Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Pontianak. Metodolog yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian campuran di mana prosedur kuantitatif dilakukan pertama kali, diikuti oleh prosedur kualitatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui kuesioner dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa program praktik mengajar online memberi berbagai pengalaman yang menghasilkan persepsi “memuaskan” atau “tidak memuaskan”. Secara rinci, lebih dari 50% peserta setuju bahwa meskipun menghadapi situasi menantang selama praktik, mereka menemukan program praktik mengajar online bermanfaat, terutama dalam memberikan wawasan dan pengalaman mengajar yang luas. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa terlepas dari cara pelaksanaannya, program praktik mengajar selalu membentuk pola pikir dan sikap mengajar yang positif kepada guru prajabatan.
