Abstract

English is considered as one of important languages in human life. Recently, English is a requirement for working people, and one of the working fields which require their employees to master English is tour guide. This research is a descriptive qualitative research which described the English sentences used by Indonesian tour guide in Prambanan temple. This research investigated their competency in producing English sentences. This study focused on the percentage of correct and incorrect sentences produces by Indonesian tour guides in Prambanan Temple. The writer finds that each respondent produced three types of sentences, which are simple sentences, compound sentences and complex sentences. Based on the analysis, each respondent produced more simple sentences than other types of sentences. Keywords: Sentence, Tour Guide

Abstract

This study examines women images in Indonesian domestic product advertisements. To support this examination, this study also examines the social situations in the advertisements. Soy sauce commercials were taken as the data of this study. It used 17 commercials from three different brands, namely; Kecap ABC, Kecap Bango, and Kecap Sedaap. To conduct this study, it applied sociological approach by using theories on social situation found in Goffman’s Gender Advertisement and women portrayal in commercial in Holtzhausen’s Content Analysis of Roles Portrayed by Women in Advertisements in Selected South African. The data found show that Indonesian product commercials use religious events to promote the products; Ramadhan and Iedhul Adha. The setting of place shows job division between men and women; public area and domestic area. This commercials are dominated by domestic area as the women’s authority. The women image described in the commercials from the female models reflect Indonesian women still hold domestic role as mother and housewive. The data shows 35% as housewives and mothers, 23% as housewives, mothers, and social beings, 18% mothers, 12% housewives, mother, and work-related, 6% as housewives, and 6% as homemakers and social beings. Abstract

Technology in this era as a friend for human. It can be good or bad depending on the user. Now almost of all generation prefer the practical thing to use in their life, included in learning process. Both of teachers and students prefer to have an effective and efficient learning process. The researcher use the situation to conduct research and development. The research “Developing Ebook “Batang Heaven of Asia” as Descriptive Text Teaching Materials” was the utilization of technology in learning process. The e-book can help the teachers and the students as learning source. The research answered two questions (1) How is the need of developing e-book “Heaven of Asia” as descriptive text teaching materials? (2) How is developing e-book “Batang Heaven of Asia” as descriptive text teaching materials? The development procedures that used in this research was PPE from Richey and Klein 2005 . Those procedures were planning, production, and evaluation. In planning, the researcher distributed the questionnaire to get teachers’ and students’ needs. From the data result, the researcher analyzed the data and designed the product based on teachers’ and students’ needs. The process of producing this e-book, the researcher observed the tourism destination before writing the text. The title of e-book was Let’s Explore Batang. It contained the basic standard and learning goals, the materials, the texts, worksheet and glossary. This RND arrange e-book as descriptive text teaching material based on description of tourism destination in Batang Regency. This e-book was not only the texts but there were some pictures of the destination described. The e-book validated by some experts, they were English lecturers and English teacher. Abstract

Racial prejudice is a wrong assessment in society which is done by particular group towards other groups based on their visual appearance. These researches aimed to investigate the factors causing racial prejudice as depicted in 12 Years A Slave movie. The data were collected by using a qualitative method. This literary research examines the racial prejudice of white people towards black people. White people have negative prejudice towards black people without enough knowledge. The result of the research illustrated the racial prejudice arises because of two factors. Abstract

Popular literary work, such as detective story, is an interesting phenomenon in literature since so many people like to read this kind of literary work. Popular literature in general has certain pattern called as formula. In this research, short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in The Best of Sherlock Holmes become the research object. Two of them, ‘The Red-Headed League’ and ‘The Final Problems’ are chosen for showing uniqueness compared to the other eighteen titles with the massive use of French or other French-related terms. This phenomenon invites further research interest on what the author's intention and purpose in using French and other French-related things. The language aspect is included in the discussion field of Sociology of Literature, because language is basically created from social dynamic process. Thus, Alan Swingewood's Sociology of Literature approach which views literature as a mirror of age is considered to be appropriate for this research model. The analysis results of French construction and its related things through fictional characters in the short story show the author's expression who wants to describe the France atmosphere, the Britain-France relations, and their triumphs in the spheres of literature and economy.
