Abstract

This article show that corrupt bureaucrats do not always result in a negative effect on the forest sustainability. Even under a certain condition, a corrupt behavior may result in a positive effect on the forest sustainability. An inappropriate policy is more important a cause of the forest sustainability than a corrupt behavior. Therefore, fixing this structural mistake needs to be prioritized in combating the forest destruction, for this structural mistake is the real primary cause of the forest destruction in Indonesia. Fixing this structural mistake is much more effective in combating the forest destruction than finding honest bureaucrats.

Abstract

The species composition and forest structure of Taman Hutan Raya Bukit Soeharto - East Kalimantan were investigated using transect method through systematic sampling with random start design. During data collection,5 transects of 20 m width and  1 km length of each in Wanariset Semboja forest complex and 10 transects in Pusrehut UNMUL and Protection Forest areas were established. The study shows that species richness of trees in those three forest complexes are relatively similar, however, the regeneration stage in Pusrehut UNMUL forest complex is relatively higher than those in another two areas.  Medang (Litsea firma),  Acacia (Acacia sp.), and Mahang (Macaranga gigantea) are dominant tree species in Wanariset Semboja, Pusrehut UNMUL and Protection Forest areas, respectively.  Mahang (M. gigantea) as pioneer species is also commonly dominated forest regeneration in Taman Hutan Raya Bukit Soeharto.   Based on tree’s  diameter distribution, those forests show balanced uneven-aged forests in which the large amount of trees are concentrated in the height class of 10 to 29 m.  Species diversity of those forests are relatively high (H > 2.5) either for seedling, sapling, pole or tree growth stages, however, those forests show different plant communities (IS < 70 %).

Abstract

Acacia mangium Willd is one of the promising wood species, it is a fast growing species and can be used as raw materials for pulp, furniture and wood working. Musi Hutan Persada Company has planted Acacia mangium Willd in large scale for pulp processing raw materials and for wood working industry. The faculty of forestry of the Nusa Bangsa University in collaboration with the Musi Hutan Persada have examined the effect of “Sonic Bloom” to the Acacia mangium Willd germination and seedling growth. The results of the research are the following : (1) The seed germination with “Sonic Bloom” provided percented of germination of 82%, better than those without “Sonic Bloom”, i.e. only 34%; (2) With Sonic Bloom,  the height of 80-days old seedling is 129.6 cm higher than those without “Sonic Bloom”of only 90.7 cm; (3) the diameter of 80-days old seedling with “Sonic Bloom” is 0,24 cm higher than those without “Sonic Bloom” harving diameters of only 0.19 cm. The study concludes that sonic bloom treatment is very useful for the seed germination and the growth of Acacia mangium Willd seedling.

Abstract

he extension and designation of Gunung Halimun-Salak National Park has caused land conflict issue widely.  Many local communities have used this national park land for their agriculture crops and dwelling.  Through the historical perspective, it was found that this land conflict was due to ongoing change of land use policies. The government, from the Dutch Colonial to Japan occupation, imposed different land use policy to the Halimun-Salak land.  These changing policies have caused many local communities living inside the current designated state forestland.  Regretabbly, the current government did not solve this land conflict, but rather offered uncertainty by permitting and charging the local communities who cultivate inside the state forestland.  Undoubtedly, this uncertainty has caused problems in the future to the national park.  It was thought that border arrangement will solve this land conflict as it has been proven that changing policies have change the land-use in Halimun-Salak area.
Landslide Detection Technique using multidate SPOT Imageries: A case study in Teradomari, Tochio and Shitada Mura, Niigata, Japan I Nengah Surati Jaya

Abstract

This study describes the use of multitemporal  principal component analisys (MPCA), vegetation index differencing (VIDN) and  conventional maximum likelihood classifier (MLC) for  detecting landslides.  The study found that the synthetic images derived from stable greenness, delta greenness and delta brightness of MPCA summarized the information of landslides effectively producing accuracy of 88% for Teradomari and 91% for Tochio and Shitada Mura.  The VIDN provides relatively lower accuracies than those from MPCA, i.e., only 62.5% for Teradomari and 64% for Tochio and Shitada Mura. The MLC method also provided very low user’s accuracy, i.e. 56.9% for Teradomari and 63.7% for Tochio and Shitada Mura but high producer’s accuracies, i.e. 100% for Teradomari and 98.3% for Tochio and Shitada Mura. The study also found that the landsides that could be detected should be more than the size of spatial resolution of the SPOT imagery, i.e. 10 m x 10 m. Detecting landslides using SPOT imagery is more efficient than using only ground survey, providing an efficiency of 2.7.

Abstract

Recreation development is usually oriented toward on the mass tourism to maximise a number of tourists and rarely put the environmental aspect into consideration.  This created an effect on the sustainability of ecology.  This study’s emphasis is on figuring out an alternative of outdoor recreation product which based on the ecology aspect to support the development of outdoor recreation in the Wana Wisata Curug Cilember (WWCC). This study put the characteristic of tourist and local people into consideration which are describe the product of ecology recreation in order to achieve an ideal product that has not been reached previously and still need more serious effort.  Analysis descriptive with qualitative and quantitative approach is used in this study.  SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) and descriptive statistic are considered for alternative outdoor recreation product while the AHP (Analysis Hierarchy Process) has been  used to achieve a priority product for implementation.  The findings suggested a diversification strategy or S-T (Strengths – Threats) was chosen to develop the products of recreation in WWCC.  The priority of these products based on the AHP value are as follows: a) Water falls (0.2700), b) Natural scenery (0.1623), c) Camping (0.1405), d) Hiking (0.1073), e) Theraphy of water fall energy (0.0885),  f) Plants viewing (0.0665), g) Wildlife viewing (0.0525) and h) Outbound (0.0380).
