Abstract

The growth-site quality is one of the essential information needed to support sustainable forest management particularly in forestry planning. This paper describes the development of a site-quality class of Nypa vegetation by considering the biological and physical factors. The main objective of this study is to develop a discriminant model and to find out major factors that may be used to predict the quality of Nypa growth-sites.The model was developed using variables either measured on UAV images or from field measurement, namely soil texture (X1), water salinity (X2), water pH (X3), crown closure (X4) and stand density (N) measured on the UAV image (X5). The study found that the site quality of Nypa could be indicated by the variation of its biomass content. Then, it was concluded that the major factors that affect the site quality are the soil texture (X1),water salinity (X2),and water pH (X3) with 78.3% of overall accuracy.

Abstract

In the last two decades there has been significant leap on the spatial resolution of the satellite digital images which may be very useful for estimating stand parameter required for forest as well as environment management. This paper describes development of stand volume estimator models using SPOT 6 panchromatic and multispectral images with an object-based digital image analysis (OBIA) and conventional pixel-based approaches. The data used include panchromatic band with1.5m spatial resolution, and multispectral band with6m spatial resolution. The proposed OBIA technique with mean-shift algorithm was functioned to derive a canopy cover variable from the fusion of the panchromatic and multispectral, while the pixel-based vegetation index was used to develop model with an original pixel-size of 6 m.  The estimator models were established based on 65 sample plots both measured in the field and images.  The study found that the OBIA provides more accurate identification with Kappa Accuracy (KA) of 71% and Overall Accuracy (OA) of 86%. The study concluded that the best stand volume estimation model is the model that developed from the canopy cover (C) derived from OBIA i.e., v = 13.47e0.032C with mean deviation of only 0.92%, better than the model derived from conventional pixel-based approach, i.e., v = 0.0000067e16.48TNDVI with a mean deviation of 5.37%.

Abstract

This paper examined several methods for interpolating biomass on logged-over dry land forest using terrestrial-based forest inventory in Labanan, East Kalimantan and Lamandau, Kota Wringing Barat, Central Kalimantan.  The plot-distances examined was 1,000−1,050 m for Labanan and 1,000−899m for Lawanda.  The main objective of this study was to obtain the best interpolation method having the most accurate prediction on spatial distribution of forest biomass for dry land forest. Two main interpolation methods were examined: (1) deterministic approach using the IDW method and (2) geo-statistics approach  using Kriging with spherical, circular, linear, exponential, and Gaussian models.   The study results at both sites consistently showed that the IDW method was better than the Kriging method for estimating the spatial distribution of biomass.  The validation results using chi-square test showed that the IDW interpolation provided accurate biomass estimation.   Using the percentage of mean deviation value (MD(%)), it was also recognized that the IDWs with power parameter (p) of 2 provided relatively low value , i.e., only 15% for Labanan, East Kalimantan Province and 17% for Lamandau, Kota Wringing Barat Central Kalimantan Province. In general, IDW interpolation method provided better results than the Kriging, where the Kriging method provided MD(%) of about 27% and 21% for Lamandau and Labanan sites, respectively.

Abstract

This study describes the use of multitemporal  principal component analisys (MPCA), vegetation index differencing (VIDN) and  conventional maximum likelihood classifier (MLC) for  detecting landslides.  The study found that the synthetic images derived from stable greenness, delta greenness and delta brightness of MPCA summarized the information of landslides effectively producing accuracy of 88% for Teradomari and 91% for Tochio and Shitada Mura.  The VIDN provides relatively lower accuracies than those from MPCA, i.e., only 62.5% for Teradomari and 64% for Tochio and Shitada Mura. The MLC method also provided very low user’s accuracy, i.e. 56.9% for Teradomari and 63.7% for Tochio and Shitada Mura but high producer’s accuracies, i.e. 100% for Teradomari and 98.3% for Tochio and Shitada Mura. The study also found that the landsides that could be detected should be more than the size of spatial resolution of the SPOT imagery, i.e. 10 m x 10 m. Detecting landslides using SPOT imagery is more efficient than using only ground survey, providing an efficiency of 2.7.

Abstract

Taman Nasional Bukit Barisan Selatan (TNBBS) memiliki ekosistem yang lengkap mulai dari hutan dataran rendahtermasuk hutan mangrove hingga hutan dataran tinggi. Taman nasional ini teridentifikasi sebagai area konservasiprioritas utama untuk harimau sumatra (Tiger Conservation Unit 1). Akan tetapi, banyak tutupan hutan yang digunduli (deforestasi). Deforestasi bukan hanya menjadi ancaman besar bagi kelestarian hutan tetapi juga terhadappopulasi harimau sumatra. Penelitian ini menghubungkan data citra satelit Landsat dengan data survei harimaumenggunakan kamera otomatis (camera traps) untuk mengetahui pola deforestasi, populasi harimau, dan implikasideforestasi terhadap populasi harimau. Hasil penelitian menunjukan sekitar 27% tutupan hutan di TNBBS telahhilang. Rata-rata laju deforestasi dalam satu dasawarsa terakhir (1998 - 2006) sebesar 18,76 km2/tahun. Jumlahharimau menurun dari 57 individu pada tahun 1998 menjadi 22 individu di tahun 2006, dan kepadatan populasinyajuga menurun dari 2,25 individu/100km2 menjadi 1.16 individu/100km2. Harimau di TNBBS memilikihabitat yang bervariasi mulai dari hutan dataran rendah termasuk mangrove ikutan hingga dataran tinggi.Kata Kunci: Deforestasi, Mangrove, Camera Trap, Citra Satelit, Harimau Sumatra, Taman Nasional Bukit BarisanSelatan

Abstract

In forestry sector, the remote sensing technology hold a key role on forest inventory and monitoring their changes. This paper describes the algorithm for detecting deforestation and forest degradation using high resolution satellite imageries with knowledge-based approach. The main objective of the study is to develop a practical technique for monitoring deforestation and forest degradation occurred within the mangrove and swamp forest ecosystem.  The SPOT 4, 5, and 6 images acquired in 2007, 2012 and 2014 were transformed into three vegetation indices, i.e., Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Green-Normalized Difference Vegetation index (GNDVI) and Normalized Green-Red Vegetation index (NRGI).  The study found that deforestation was well detected and identified using the NDVI and GNDVI, however the forest degradation could be well detected using NRGI, better than NDVI and GNDVI.  The study concludes that the strategy for monitoring deforestation, biomass-based forest degradation as well as forest growth could be done by combining the use of NDVI, GNDVI and NRGI respectively.

Abstract

Hutan rawa gambut telah diakui sebagai ekosistem yang mampu menyimpan karbon hingga jumlah besar. Riset ini membahas pengembangan model estimasi massa karbon menggunakan data penginderaan jauh aktif. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah  mendapatkan informasi hasil untuk pengembangan  model estimasi volume massa karbon dengan menggunakan penginderaan jauh aktif, data ALOS PALSAR. Model dikembangkan atas dasar hubungan antara massa karbon rata-rata dan nilai backscatter ALOS PALSAR dari HH, HV dan band sintetik  HH/HV yang berasal dari berbagai ukuran pixel, yaitu : (a) 1 x 1 pixel, (b) 3 x 3 pixel dan (c) 5 x 5 pixel. Studi ini menemukan bahwa koefisien korelasi yang baik ditunjukkan antara nilai backscatter dan stok karbon. Penelitian ini juga menunjukkan bahwa korelasi terbaik diberikan oleh HV, korelasi tersebut lebih   baik   daripada   korelasi   yang   diperoleh   dengan   menggunakan   HH   dan   HH/HV.   Studi   ini mengidentifikasi model terbaik, yaitu ŷ = -5,337HV2– 111,8HV – 480,1;  R²=0,86 dan 3 x 3 pixel
