Abstract

Written in the Stars is a novel, written by Aisha Saeed. Written in the Stars was originally published in 2000 but republished again March 24th 2015. The story is about a Pakistani-American high school senior girl, torn between love for her culturally conservative immigrant parents and the boyfriend she keeps secret from them. When her outraged parents discover the romance, they take her and her brother on a vacation to visit relatives in rural Pakistan, with plans to force her into an arranged marriage to a local man. The objectives of this study are to find out the negative impacts of forced marriage in Aisha Saeed’s novel Written in the Stars and to describe the negative impacts of forced marriage. Qualitative Descriptive Research is appropriately applied in this study because this research shows the nature of the situation as it exists at the time of the study. The results of this study show that the implementation of Forced marriage only brings negative impacts to one or both parties. There are two forms of negative impacts found: violence and loss of social relationship. Violence is again divided into two forms: physical violence and verbal abuse.

Abstract

The research is concerned with types of love faced by Tara Dupont, the main character of the novel Autumn in Paris, written by Ilana Tan.  The types of love: friendship, infatuated love, romantic love and consummate love are the main focus of the study.  The objective is to find out how Tara Dupont implements the types of love in relationship with people around her. One of the theories used in the research is Robert Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love  which states that love has three components:  intimacy, passion and commitment  and these three components are to be applied to obtain or run real love.  Qualitative descriptive method is applied for the whole analysis.  The finding shows that types of love are found in the novel Autumn in Paris. Friendship appears in a relationship between Tara, Sebastien and Tatsuya. Romantic love and infatuated love are the dominant types of love and consummate love is the rarest.

Abstract

Hatred has a lot of negative impacts on the hated person and the hating one. The impacts appear due to the existence of the causes and the implementation of the hatred. The purpose of this study is to research the causes and the implementation of the antagonist’s hatred in Jeff Nathanson’s novel Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge. In this analysis, the antagonist, Captain Slazar, hates pirates very much especially the protagonist, Captain Jack Sparrow. His life’s goal is only to kill Jack in all kinds of ways. This research uses qualitative research method proposed by Gilgun (1992:22) who clarifies a research method that is more focused on understanding social phenomena from the perspective of participants by emphasizing on the complete picture rather than by detailing it into interrelated variables. This study focuses on the analysis or interpretation of written materials based on the context. In this case, the novel has to be well interpreted. Results establish the fact that hatred does not only harm the others, but also oneself. Besides, it will tell how bad the hatred affects oneself. This study also reveals how the antagonist releases the hatred to the protagonist by pursuing and trying to kill him.

Abstract

The poem is one of Pablo Neruda’s finest collections, containing undivided feelings for someone with picturesque comparisons with life and spiritual elements. The poem depicts a person’s selfless and pure love for another. It is about two choices a boy has given to a girl, whether the girl will forget him or come to him. While the first half of the poem is incredibly romantic and flattering, the third and fourth stanzas paint a very different picture, and they serve as a warning to Neruda’s mistress. The third stanza stands on its own, cautioning Neruda’s lover that if she stops loving him, he will do the same in return. It also begins the first in a string of ultimatums Neruda offers to his lover. The study is conducted by means of descriptive qualitative method, showing social pictures, in this case matters of love. The grand theory used is taken from Steinberg’s triangular theory of love. The results show that harmony in love could be obtained by means of intimacy, passion and commitment.

The method used in analyzing the data in this paper is Descriptive Qualitative Research in which it is a research method used to acquire and describe accurate, factual, and systematic data. The findings show that Cole, as a mayor in the city of Ember who is supposed to protect his citizens in the city of Ember, has misused his power to dupe his citizens. He convicingly says to the citizens that if they work hard and dedicate their life to the city of Ember, the city will be prosperous. In fact, he speaks so glibly to the citizens for the shake of his own interests that he will not need to work hard anymore to control the city. Mayor Cole is also a very greedy man. So greedy he is that he has ordered two of his trusted workers named Looper and Lizzie Bisco to steal the food supplies from the storeroom and hiden them in a tunnel pipeworks, called the room 351 to be enjoyed by himself. He has overabundance of food while the citizens of Ember are in a crisis of food. Furthermore, the finding of this study shows that Mayor Cole’s evil deeds is revealed by Doon and Lina in the long run.
