Abstract

This research is about the struggle of the first character named Ogino Ginko in reaching her dream to be a female doctor and help other women who have the same illness as she suffers in a novel, Beyond the Blossoming Fields, written by Watanabe Jun`ichi, published in 1970. It means struggle is something crucial in our life. The finding of this research shows that the protagonist is successful in her struggle to be a doctor. She becomes the first female doctor in Japan, and after she opens a clinic, there are so many woman patients coming to her clinic, and most of them are contracted with the illness as she suffers. She also becomes the inspiration for other women in Japan to become woman doctors.

Abstract

This research is concerned with Protagonist’s Physical Courage found in James Dashner’s novel The Maze Runner first published in 2009. It is described in the novel that the Protagonist of the novel has shown his physical courage in a Glade which is always haunted or attacked by dangerous creatures called Grievers. Because of his great courage, he has been able to influence his friends to fight with the Grievers. He is even admired by his friends, all the Gladers. He can even finally be able to escape together with them to live freely outside the place that has already imprisoned them in it. This research uses a qualitative research method proposed by Creswell: defining this method as a means for exploring and understanding the meaning individuals or group ascribe to a social or human problem. After having analyzed the variable in the novel, it can be concluded that the protagonist shows two forms of physical courage. They are selfishness and being one own-self.

Abstract

This research aims at identifying, analyzing and describing the psychological condition in Room by Emma Donoghue, and also the causes and effects of the problem which are described in this novel. In the novel, the writer analyze the problem by using theory of Islam (2007), Jung in Emir (2016), and Van Dijk (1997) which explains about psychological effect, psychology, and captivity. This thesis uses qualitative method in analyzing the data to be flatly described to show the evidence of the data identified from the novel. The analysis is conducted by classifying the obtained data in chapter four related to the problems of the study. Hence, there are two kinds of psychological effect and three causes of the effect to be analyzed, i.e. social anxiety disorder and posttraumatic disorder, and the causes are: held captive, domination of Old Nick and hard attempt to escape. The results of this study depict that someone who has a mental illness within himself is not spared from the causes behind them, and be brave to get out from comfort zone to be a better version of your life like what is done by Jack by bravely escaping from the room.

Abstract

This study is concerned with the causes of anger. Anger a basic human emotion, as elemental as, gladness, sadness, anxiety or disgust. These emotions are tied to basic survival and are honed over the course of human history. Anger is related to the “fight, flight, or freeze” response of the sympathetic nervous system:  it prepares humans to fight. But fighting does not necessarily mean throwing punches; it might motivate communities to combat injustice by changing laws or enforcing new behavioral norms. This is the positive trait of anger though in many cases only the negative ones are seen. Everyone experiences anger at some point. It becomes problematic, however, when the frequency or severity of anger interferes with relationships, work performance, legal standing, or mental health. All these points are faced by the main characters of the novel. The whole research is done by means of descriptive qualitative research, exposing the social features, in this case anger. The research results show that there are causes of anger found through the study: past experience and lack of problem-solving ability. Owing to traumatic past experiences, one of the main characters does a kidnapping and on the second point, the inability of solving problems, makes another main character filled with anger.

Abstract

This article is about the protagonist’s obstacles and the solutions for the obstacles in John Ronald Reuel Tolkien’s novel The Hobbit which is published in 1937. The Hobbit is about adventure in searching of dragon guarded gold. The protagonist’s name is Bilbo Baggins. On his journey, he undergoes some obstacles such as being arrested by the trolls, being attacked and arrested by the goblins, falling down to the dark cave, being pursued by the wolves, and fighting with the spider. There are two solutions which are needed in solving the obstacle; ingenuity and physical endurance. This analysis uses the data  taken from the novel applying Descriptive Qualitative Research. One of the dominant concepts of obstacle used in this study is proposed by Brian Kariger and Daniel Fierro (1998) who state that obstacle is something that obstructs or hinders progress. The conclusion from this analysis shows that the protagonist, Bilbo Baggins faces some obstacles and there are two solutions to solve the obstacles.
