Abstract

Background: Smoking habits can have a negative impact on smokers and those around them. Smokers tend to have a lower body mass index (BMI) than nonsmokers in various populations. The average cigarette smoked per day per person in Indonesia is 12.3 cigarettes (equivalent to one pack). Smokers generally have a lower body weight than non-smokers.Objectives: This study aims to determine differences in nutritional status or body mass index (BMI) between smokers and non-smokers.Methods: The study used cross-sectional, with a sample of 66 students. The research was conducted at the Health Polytechnic of the Ministry of Health in 2019. Data collection was carried out by direct interviews using questionnaires, as well as anthropometric measurements (weight and height) to assess nutritional status. Data processing was carried out by categorizing smokers and non-smokers, and nutritional status using the z-score of BMI. Data analysis used Independent T-test at 95% CI.Results: The results have reported that students' smoking habits are carried out outside the home (81.8%) by smoking between 3-6 cigarettes/day. Student nutritional status (BMI) in smokers 21.33 kg/m2 and non-smokers 21.86 kg/m2. Statistically, there was no difference (p= 0.600) between the nutritional status of smoking students and non-smoking students at the Health Polytechnic of Aceh, Ministry of Health (p > 0.05). Conclusion: There is no difference in nutritional status (BMI) between smoking students and non-smoking students at the Health Polytechnic of Aceh, Ministry of Health.

Abstract

Background: Breast milk is the main source of nutrition for babies from birth until they are able to digest other nutritional sources after 6 months of age. Failure in the breastfeeding process is often caused by maternal factors, namely breastfeeding. Actions to facilitate milk production include the oxytocin massage method. Objective: The aim of the study was to analyze the effect of oxytocin massage compared to counseling on breastfeeding techniques using leaflets on the milk production of primiparous postpartum mothers. Methods: The study used a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design. The sample selection was accidental sampling with inclusion and exclusion criteria, which consisted of 30 postpartum mothers who were divided into 2 groups, 15 respondents were given oxytocin massage and 15 respondents were given leaflets. The data analysis method was univariate and bivariate using Paired T-test and Independent T-test.Results: The results showed that the oxytocin massage treatment had a p-value= 0.000 (p < 0.05) meaning that there was a difference between before and after treatment. The control group had a p-value= 0.432 (p > 0.05) meaning that there was no difference between before and after treatment. There was a significant difference between the treatment group compared to the control group. Conclusion: Oxytocin massage has a significant effect in increasing milk production in primiparous postpartum mothers. Oxytocin massage is more effective than counseling using leaflet media to increase breast milk production.

Abstract

Background: Flies (Musca domestica) can act as vectors of typhus, dysentery, and cholera. Various methods have been used to control flies from around human life, either mechanically (light traps), a chemical in the form of toxic baits or insecticides, or with scents that are repellent. A mixture of curry leaf extract with soursop leaves can be used as an insecticide to repel house flies. Because curry leaves and soursop leaves contain compounds, tannins, saponins, and flavonoids that flies do not like. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a mixture of curry leaves with soursop leaves as a natural insecticide in repelling the flies (Musca Domestica). Methods: This research is an experimental design with a mixture of curry leaf extract with soursop leaves on the power of repelling house flies. This research was conducted in 2019 in Darul Kamal District, Aceh Besar. The object of the research was 450 house flies, which consisted of five treatments with three repetitions. Data analysis was carried out with the one-way ANOVA statistical test. Results: The descriptive results showed that at a dose of 10gr/100ml the average flies were able to repel 37 flies, at a dose of 20 gr/100ml were 44, at a dose of 30 gr/100ml were 59 and at a dose of 40 gr/100ml was 70. Of the four treatments, the most effective dose was at a dose of 40gr/100ml, which was 70 (77.7%). Statistically, it showed that there was a significant difference (p < 0.05) between various doses/treatments of mixed extracts of curry leaves (Murraya koeginii) and soursop leaves (Annona muricata Linn) on the repelling power of house flies (Musca domestica), with p-value = 0.000.Conclusion: A mixture of curry leaf extract (Murraya koeginii) with soursop leaf (Annona muricata Linn) is effective as an insecticide in repelling house flies (Musca domestica).
