Abstract

Polymer composites are expanding in scope and applications to water-based structures such as the ship's hull in ship vessels due to their resistance to water and satisfactory mechanical properties. Unforunately, few studies have tackled their water absorption properties. In this paper, a novel method, DEMATEL, is used to analyse the conflicting water absorption process parameters of cocoa pod husk composite using the cause and effect associations of the parameters. The parameters considered are particulate loading, initial weight, particulate weight, the weight of the matrix, and weight after 150 days and rate of water absorption. A comparison scale explains the extent of influence of a criterion on the other. The direct relationship matrix is normalized and the total relation matrix generated to procedure a causal diagram. The most fascinating findings of the study are the differences between the sum of row and columns, which places particulate weights as the most appealing, 1.0798, while the rate of water absorption as the least appealing criterion. Besides, the sum of the row and column that yields the most attractive results is the particulate weight (5.4982) while the least attractive result is the rate of water absorption (3.5436). The novelty of this work lies in the application of DEMATEL structure to examine contextual associations between the essential pointers of water absorption process parameters, for cocoa pod husk composites in the water environment. To our knowledge, it is the first type of work in this area on the selected agro-filler-based composite.

Abstract

This paper presents the research conducted on three tradesmen, the mechanics, carpenters, and welders, to measure and compare the left and right hands' dimensions and evaluate the hand index to understand the measurements. Despite rea's utility, the area's utility research has analyzed these technical personnel's hand characteristics. Compared with manufacturing systems, small businesses and entrepreneurs are loss studied. Still, opportunities abound to recognize, appraise, and explore novel instances associated with new product development with detailed information on their hand measurements. Data was collected from mechanics, carpenters, and welders rating in Lagos, Nigeria. The analysis is divided into hand measurements, finger measurements, hand index of the mechanics, carpenters, and welders. The subjects ranged between 18 and 60 years, and measures were made while the subject stands erect. Vernier caliper and tape rules were made. Data concerning heights, hand's height and width, and other aspects of the hand were collected. It was observed that the carpenters have higher values of the hand length to the right third finger. By comparing the mechanics and welders, the mechanics have higher values throughout the experiment. The subjects' heights for carpenters have the highest values. The right and left-hand dimensions are close for the mechanics. There is a greater deviation for the left and right hand for the welders. The deviation is also observed for the carpenters.

Abstract

Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) is a risk assessment tool that mitigates potential failures in systems, processes, designs, or services and has been used in a wide range of industries. The conventional risk priority number (RPN) method has been criticized for having many shortcomings. Various risk priority models have been proposed in various literature to improve the performance of the FMEA itself. However, there has been no literature review on this topic. This study reviewed 50 FMEA papers published between 1998 and 2019 in international journals and categorized them according to various industry and industry output. The automotive and manufacturing industries dominated the implementation of FMEA. For the industry's production: goods and services, mostly dominated by interests in implementing FMEA in their industries. Hopefully, this finding will be useful for goods and services industries willing to implement FMEA, especially the services industry.

Abstract

Technic Quality Management concepts and ideas are formalized based on the foundation of work carried out over the last few centuries, Quality management begins with a simple inspection-based system, where a product is compared against product standards by a team of inspectors. The purpose of this research is to find out how the TQM principles are implemented in various industrial sectors in improving all components of the company. In this study, we reviewed 40 TQM papers published between 2011 and 2020. The method used is to review research papers that discuss companies implementing Technic Quality Management. A total of 27 journals (about 68%) used the implementation of TQM and 13 journals (32%) as review methods. From these results it can be seen that 74% of companies that implement TQM use survey data sources and 26% of companies use other data. Finally, this paper shows that every TQM implementation contains at least one of the eight TQM principles, namely leadership, involvement of people, process approach, system approach management, continuous improvement, factual approach to decision making, mutual beneficial supplier relationships, customer-focused organization.

Abstract

The unique area of friction stir welding that involves Al-TiB2 composite development stirs controversy and fails to offer a clear understanding of how to choose the best composite among alternatives without subjectivity. At present, the experienced fabricator uses intuition in judgement, leading to wrong or inconsistent decisions. In this paper, the WASPAS multicriteria model is deployed to choose the best Al-TiB2 composite among options using tensile strength, ductility and microhardness as attributes. The procedure generally entails normalization, preference score and ranking determination and literature data was used. The emerging conclusion from this study is that irrespective of the weight determination method and the multicriteria model adopted to evaluate the alternative fabricated Al-TiB2 composites, the Al-10%TiB2 and Al6065 based alloy always reveal as the best and worst composites, respectively, even under varied normalisation methods. The research confirmed that multicriteria analysis is a potential objective method to choose among fabricated alternatives. The work showed that there is scope to evade the consequences of subjectivity in composite decision making by attaching adequate weights to the deciding factors thereby avoiding misguidance and incorrect decision making. Furthermore, multicriteria models offer novel approaches to understand the relative preference of fabricating composites to one another in the metal matrix composite development area.

Abstract

In boring E250 B0 steel material, the selection of process parameters is one of the most challenging tasks to achieve. The boring literature lacks understanding and fails to reveal how to select the important boring parameters for utmost resource distribution to the most important parameters. This article proposes a novel method to analyse the importance of parameters in boring to produce utmost surface roughness using the entropy-decision tree-VIKOR approach as a multi-criteria decision-making solution to the choice of process materials for superior surface roughness. The choice parameters include speed, depth of cut, feed and nose radius. The entropy approach was instituted to attain the weight of the diverse parameters. The decision tree approach is deployed through the classification of the parameters as beneficial and non-beneficial and the expected values at each mode evaluated. The desirable weightage is then established and serves as the input to the VIKOR approach. This converts the desirable weightage into unit measures through the best/worst value and weightage evaluation. The individual regrets are then analyzed and the final ranking obtained. Results revealed that the depth of cut is the most important parameter, then nose radius (0.98), feed (0.307) and speed (0), respectively. Therefore, a plan to assign more measures to the depth of cut may be developed and the least resources may be assigned to speed. This detail may be helpful to prepare the annual budgets for the boring operation on the factory floor.

Abstract

This paper examined the behavior of selected maintenance downtime parameters of handling equipment in a container terminal and established the system's optimal parameters. Taguchi method, Taguchi–Pareto method, and Taguchi–ABC method were applied to analyze it. The chosen process parameters are the downtime, probability density function, and cumulative density function. The L25, L25, and L20 orthogonal arrays were selected for the Taguchi, Taguchi-Pareto, and Taguchi–ABC methods. Data were acquired from a container terminal in the southern part of Nigeria, and we deployed the Weibull function to analyze the parameters at three shape functions of β = 0.5, 1, and 3 from twenty-five experiments. The signal–to–noise quotient and analysis of variance were used to establish the optimal level and contributions of the parameters. The results indicated that using the Taguchi method, for all the shape parameters of β = 0.5, 1, and 3, the most and the least significant parameters were downtime and cumulative density function, respectively. For the Taguchi-Pareto method, the most and the least significant parameters were downtime and probability density function, respectively, at β = 0.5. At β = 1, the most and the least significant parameters were downtime and cumulative density function, respectively. However, at β = 3, the most and the least significant parameters were probability density function and downtime, respectively. Finally, using the Taguchi-ABC method, at β = 0.5, the most and the least significant parameters were probability density function and downtime, respectively. Nonetheless, at β = 1 and 3, the most and the least significant parameters were downtime and probability density function, respectively. The proposed model would assist seaport maintenance managers in the effective control of downtime
