Abstract

The study provides information on social media participation in relation to social responsibility in voting. The results showed that sociodemographic factors have no bearing on the likelihood of democratic engagement because the elections affect all citizens of the country.  Moreover, TikTok has a positive effect on the odds of election participation among young adults. As for social media interaction, it was found that bad interactions led to lower odds of participation.  Political agendas such as agriculture, education, and law & order also led to lower odds of participation. The research utilized a survey questionnaire consisting of three sections which were sociodemographic factors, social media campaign factors, and voting behaviors of the young adult Filipino participants.

Abstract

Since the introduction of European model of nation-states and boundaries in Africa (1884-1885), the history of the southern section of the Nigeria –Cameroon boundary had been a bellicose one until its resolution by the International Court of Justice in 2002. For over a century, the boundary between the two proximate neighbours had gone through several alignments and re-alignments. This paper identifies different typology of conflicts along the International divide, from colonial to post-colonial periods. These include territorial and positional disputes, functional, resource-based and frustration – aggression dimensions. It further examines the intensity and progression of the conflict between the two neighbouring African States, from the European scramble for territories, through independence, up to the International Court of Justice ruling in 2002.

Abstract

A philosophical cause of universality and relevance in the acquisition of knowledge is annexed by the reality of inconsistency in the academic stadium. In essence, knowledge and by extension education is considered by universality as an essential substratum. It follows necessarily that knowledge which is an abstract reality is perceived to be universal, with minimal reference to particularity as the source of knowledge. Accordingly, when all variables are held constant, the acquisition of knowledge should be a form of a linear track which attracts the purview of particularity. This is why universality in the acquisition of knowledge is volatile due to inconsistencies caused by its nature in relation to acquisition of such knowledge in education theory and practice. Therefrom, this article delineates the cause-effect relationship of such discrepancy by emphasizing that there occurs extrication between the knower, the known, and the process of knowing. In this case, the knower is the recipient of knowledge, the known is the subject of knowledge, and the process of knowing is the modality of dispensing such knowledge.

Abstract

This study is a test of Confucian social learning theory’s ability to influence negative behavioral outcomes among young people. Material relating to learning from different social environments and the attendant behavioral outcomes was filtered out of an assortment of Confucian texts, forming a limited Confucian social learning theory. Gang activity variables, representing levels of learned immorality within a community, from the NLSY97, were tested by delinquency and substance use outcome variables. The data was attained from the initial wave of responses from the NLSY97, with a sample of 8,985 people from the United States between the ages of 12-16. Confucian theory was supported by this examination, even after controlling for several variables including gender, ethnicity, age, household income, parent education, etc. The more gang activity (or immorality) within an environment, the greater the probability that one will be delinquent and engage in substance use. The more gang activity (or immorality) among close relatives or friends (people who are imitated or in near proximity), the greater the probability that one will be delinquent and engage in substance use. The more days gunshots are heard in a neighborhood per week (or serious immorality within a neighborhood), the greater the probability that one will be delinquent. This study attempts to bridge the gap between Confucian theory and modern criminological data, adding support to Confucian social learning theory

Abstract

This study identifies the types of Indonesian-English code-mixing in YouTube videos of Devina Hermawan in reflecting global culture and cultural hybridity. In examining the types of intra-sentential code-mixing, the researchers adopt Muysken (2000) that there are three sub-types i.e. insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. The data are collected online from “Masakan Indonesia: Indonesian Cuisine” playlist on Devina Hermawan’s YouTube channel. They are transcribed and selected based on the types. The results show that there are 159 utterances containing Indonesian-English code-mixing in five selected videos. Further, the utterances categorized as insertional type become the most frequent cases, 86 utterances (54%), followed by congruent lexicalization type in the second place, 65 utterances (41%). The utterances which categorized as alternational type are less frequently found in the videos, 8 utterances (5%). In this case, hybridization in language on the level of individual languages influence the phenomenon of code-mixing. Overall, the results of this study provide the analysis of types of code-mixing, which the texts under investigation, reflect the current global culture which is cultural hybridity.

Abstract

The covid-19 pandemic has greatly impacted business operations, economic activities, working structures, and employee productivity globally. This has led to carefully thought out measures and panic-triggered guidelines to limit the virus's spread. This paper aims to examine key determinants of productivity in the service firms during the pandemic and how these factors could be sustained after the lockdown for optimal productivity. Using primary data collected from a questionnaire administered to 411 workers, a binary logistic regression was conducted to ascertain whether these determinants are of significance or not. The empirical results revealed that remote working would only be productive in service firms if working tools are available to workers; thus, productivity can be measured regularly irrespective of the worker's location. This paper responds to the need to evaluate the drivers of employee productivity during remote working, especially during the lockdown, and to understand better these drivers for organizations planning after the pandemic.

Abstract

The present study seeks to explore the relationship between Algerian EFL students’ emotional intelligence (EI) and their burnout status. To determine the levels of these variables and reach the purpose of the study, two self-report scales are employed with a sample of 57 EFL third-year students at Ecole Normale Supérieure of Bouzareah (ENSB), in Algiers. The first scale is the Brief Emotional Intelligence Scale (BEIS-10), used to measure the students’ EI level, while the second one is the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Student Survey (MBI-SS), used to measure their burnout level. Surprisingly, the findings reveal no significant relationship between the EI level of EFL students and their burnout level since the Pearson’s Correlation demonstrates that r= .024, which suggests that EI is not a factor that affects burnout. The results also show that 60% of the students have a high level of EI, and 40% have a high level of burnout.
