Abstract

The use of unmodified tapioca for dry strength additive in the wet end process of alkline handsheet paper forming, has been conducted. Although a bit lower in comparison with CMC, tapioca has a good strengthening effect on the sheet properties, i.e. tear, burst, tensile, and fold. The diifference is shown in water absorbency, the higher the use of CMC, the higher the increase in Cobb number, but it practically remains constant for tapioca. The optimum percentage of those two additives is considered to be 3 %.

Abstract

Oil and fat can be changed to become rancid. Rancidity of oils and fats may be caused by oxidative rancidity, enzymatic rancidity and hydrolytic rancidity. The most common rancidity o..f oils and fats are caused by atmosphere air oxidation. The damaged oils and fats which highly heat are caused by oxidation and polimerization process. Oxidation of oils and fats will result : aldehide compound, ketone, hydrocarbon, alcohol, lactone and aromatc compound which have rancid odor and bitter flavour. The factors which can accelerate the oxidation are radiation (heat and light), oxidizing agent, metal catalist andorganic catalist "Which is heat labile.

Abstract

One of the famous traditional food of Indonesia is tempe. Tempe is mainly produced in small scale industries. The wastewater from tempe industries contains a high organic pollutant especially from the boiling bean wastewater with COD chromium content 30, 000 mg/l -60, 000 mg/l and usually the effluent is directly blown down to the river without any treatment. To remove the high organic pollutant in industrial wastewater generally should be treated by the anaerobic and aerobic process to dare to the low cost, while the methane gas produced can be used as a fuel to boil or cook the tempe. The simple purification system of wastewater treatment with anaerobic UASB type followed with aerobic process has successfully, remove the total rate of COD content more than 90 % in anaerobic and 85 % in aerobic.

Abstract

Tempe, a traditional famous food with a high protein, is usually produced in a small industry. Until now, most of the industries do not treat their wastewater. This research work demonstrates the ability of anaerobic processes type fixed bed process. In fixed bed reactor, grinded anaerobic microorganisms growth on the surface of the media. The result of this research show that, using anaerobic fixed bed process the COD removal rate and gas generated are over 90 % and 70 I/day )for COD inlet about I 0, 000 mg/I).
