Abstract

This research has been done because the researcher found some problems in speaking at the tenth grade at SMAN 2 Lubuk Sikaping. The first problem was the students nervous when they were asked to speak up. The second problem was the students had lack of confidence. The third problem was the students had a felt panic when their teacher gave test. The last problem was the students felt afraid the teacher inform the score of the meeting. This study aimed to find out the speaking anxiety level at tenth grade SMAN 2 Lubuk Sikaping.The design of this research was a descriptive quantitative research.The population of this research were tenth grade students that consist of 134 students. The students were divided into four classes.The researcher took 25 % of the population by using random sampling technique to determine the sample because the population is more than one hundred students and there are 34 students of this research. To collect the data, researcher used questionnaire to find out speaking anxiety level of the students.The result researcher found the data there were 3 components of speaking anxiety. The consist of communication apprehension, test anxiety and fear of negative evaluation. It was found that 89 total score of the students had moderately low anxiety level in communication apprehension. Then 94 total score of the students had moderate anxiety level in test anxiety. The last result found that 88 total score of the students had moderately low anxiety level in fear of negative evaluation. In conclusion, the students speaking anxiety level at the tenth grade at SMAN 2 Lubuk Sikaping based on those three components above was 90 total score which mean the students anxiety level in speaking was in moderate level.

Abstract

Motivation is an inner condition that guides human behaviors towards a certain target. Motivation for learning is massively important, because the greater motivation that they have gained, the greater the learning outcomes of the learners. This research was done in the sense of low interaction in the classroom as learners seldom read a book, especially before attending to the lesson. The purpose of this research was therefore to discover the motivation of the students in reading activity to enrich the classroom interaction in learning English as a foreign language (EFL). The researcher used descriptive qualitative approach. Firstly, the study, first, the researcher looked for the questionnaire of motivation to read. Secondly, the researcher selected the constructs or in this term, the questions categories to be used in this study. Thirdly, the researcher spread the selected questions as a questionnaire to the students of fifth semester of English Department in Tidar University. Then, after the researcher had finished collecting the data, the researcher analyzed the data acquired by demonstrating the motivation of the students to read the literature review. Eventually, the researcher reported the results on the basis of the study evidence.

Abstract

Character building is major issue in education. The concept of national character building refers to an effort to build nation’s character as stated in National Education system Decree Number 20 of 2003 chapter 3. National education aims to develop life skill and good character building of human. Thus, as compulsory and newly published handbook with regards to the implication of 2013 Curriculum, the ninth grade students’ handbook Think Globally Act Locally should promote character values. This study aimed at exploring character values promoted in the handbook. The document analysis as one of branches in qualitative method is used in this study. The finding of this study reveals that the handbook has already promoted national character building.

Abstract

Knowledge of pragmatic has been crucial element to the students English Department. The main focus of the research to find out the level of students pragmatic awareness by using percentage, the research was due to the problem found some students still used inappropriate respond to the pragmatic situation. The design of this research was a descriptive quantitative research in which the sample was taking by using random sampling technique with 25 samples at IAIN Bukittinggi of English Department. Additionally, the analyzing of the data was done by Written Discourse Completion Test (WDCT) test which is consist of 17 situation, made the description about the students pragmatic awareness in comprehending written discourse, analyzing the data using percentage, describe the data, found the level and making conclusion. The result showed that students pragmatic awareness in comprehending term in deixis is 61% it means the level is good. In performing term of speech act is 79% it means the level is good. Moreover, in understanding maxim is 62% it means the level is good. All of the students pragmatic awareness in comprehending written discourse is 67% it means the pragmatic awareness in comprehending written discourse of English Department of IAIN Bukittinggi is good. The implication of this study to know the level of pragmatic awareness in written discourse of English Department of IAIN Bukittinggi.

Abstract

In writing an argumentative paragraph, there will be some fallacies that can be explained as students’ misunderstanding in interpreting source language to target language, in this context English is as a target language. This misunderstanding called logical fallacies where it can broke the meaning in TL. Therefore, the aim of this research was to identify and analyze types of logical fallacies done by the fourth semester students in argumentative writing at English department of IAIN Bukittinggi. The design of this research was descriptive quantitative. The population was the fourth semester students who take writing for professional context subject. The sample was 28 students. The instrument used was documentation of student’s argumentative writing tasks. The result showed that, some informal logical fallacies found in students’ writing. 76% students wrote inductive fallacy on their writing which means that students drew a conclusion without providing enough evidence on their writing.

Abstract

This research studies about the students’ ability in using auxiliary verb on passive voice sentences at the English Department students STKIP YPM. The purpose o f this research was to find out the students’ understanding in using auxiliary verb on passive voice sentences at the third semester STKIP YPM. This research was descriptive qualitative method. The population was 15 students at third semester on English Department STKIP YPM. They were selected as the sample by using total sampling technique. The data was collected by using writing test on passive voice sentences. The finding showed that students’ understanding in using auxiliary verb on passive voices sentences at third semester of English Education Program of STKIP YPM in academic year of 2015/2016 were good enough.

Abstract

This study was aimed to know the attitude of students towards the use Reflective Journal Writing a writingactivity at the excellent classes of eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Solok in 2019/2020 academic year. The research method used in this study was quantitative descriptive. The population in this research was the excellent classes of eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Solok in 2019/2020 academic year. The total of population was 66 students of 2 classses The technique sample used was total sampling, where all the students in excellent classes, class VIII A and VIII B were included as the sample in the research. To get the data of the research, the researcher used questionnaire. The research design included a 5 point Likert-type questionnaire which were strongly agree (SA), Agree (A), Undecided (U), Disagree (D), and strongly Disagree (SD). In this case the researcher used 44 number of statements which based on 3 indicators of students’ attitude. The indicators of attitude were divided into cognitive, emotion and behavioral aspects. The finding of this research show the final percentage of students’ attitude towards reflective journal writing was 76%, it was classified as in the “very good” level. It means students had a very positive attitude towards the use of reflective journal writing as writing activity.
