Abstract

This research aims to find the effect of blended learning toward student’s achievement at higher education. This strategy is expected to contribute to be better in teaching at UPI “yptk” Padang. The research is an experiment which population consists of the students academic year of 2018/2019. Instrument is used in collecting data of this research was treatment materials in the form of blending learning and data collection instruments. The results of this research revealed a significant influence on the students’ achievement.

Abstract

This study was a descriptive study aimed at describing the implementation of reinforcement used by English teacher to the students on the first grade of SDIT Padang Islamic School, Gunung Pangilun Padang. The subjects of this study were an English teacher and 24 students. The data of this study were collected by observation and interview. The result of this study showed that the English teacher on the first grade of SDIT Padang Islamic School, Gunung Pangilun Padang used various kinds of reinforcement such as verbal, gestural, contact, and proximity reinforcement. Positive and negative reinforcement were consisted by each of those types. For positive reinforcement, the teacher used “good, very good, well done, good enough, that‟s right, nice, smiling, nodding head, thumb up, applause, touching the students, standing next to the students, and sitting close with the students”. For negative reinforcement, the teacher used “sssst, calling students‟ name, giving warning, giving explanation, and putting forefinger in front of the lips”. Besides, the teacher also apply it enthusiasticly.

Abstract

When students present oral English presentation, syntactical errors and mistakes will frequently tend to occur. This research is aimed at analysing the syntactical errors and mistakes found in English oral presentation. The sample taken is the students of Economic Faculty in 2018/2019 who were taking Communication and Presentation in English course. This research used qualitative and descriptive methods. The instruments used are the transcription of the oral presentation and interview. The data are analysed descriptively by using the category of syntactical errors and mistakes by Browns (2007) and Corder (1967). The analysis showed that the most common errors and mistakes are in incomplete unit of a sentence, confusion of using part of speech and wrong use of ‘to be’. The result of the study can be used by the lecturer to see the students’ lack of English competency and specify the teaching materials.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out how the teachers implemented principles of classroom management in teaching and learning process at SMKN 3 Padang during teaching and learning process. This is a qualitative research. The data were the result of observation and interview. The participants of this research were three English teachers of SMKN 3 Padang who teach at grade X, XI and XII. The finding of this research indicates that English teachers at SMKN 3 Padang do not implement almost all of the principles of classroom managements during teaching and learning process. They implemented them in three stages of teaching; such as pre-activity, whilst-activity and post activity. Almost all of the principles of classroom management are implemented in whilst-activity. At pre and post-activity, the teacher only implemented three principles, such as warm and enthusiasm, emphasizing on the positive things and building self-discipline. Moreover, the data shows the teachers’ reasons in implementing classroom management. The reason is increasing students’ motivation and achievement. It can be concluded that the English teachers at SMKN 3 Padang should improve their focuses to the principles of classroom management in teaching English. Hopeful, this research can be a significant contribution for English teachers in teaching.

Abstract

This paper describes activities in teaching writing by using literature. The literature is diamante poetry. The purposes of this article are the first provide a theoritical discussion about writing sentence after students conduct a poem and provide a sample of lesson plan for teaching writing sentence by using diamante poetry at Elementary School. Teachers can use diamante poetry strategy to make students be able to write sentence. Because writing is important skill and should be taught from the beginning.

Abstract

This aim of this study is at improving the vocabulary mastery through the use of crossword puzzles among seventh grade students of SMPN 05 Padang in the academic year 2019/2020. This research will use the interactive method by apply the crossword puzzle and, use the Kemmis and McTaggart models. The population of this research will be targeting the students of the class 7-7 at SMPN 5 Padang. The data get from the pre test and post test. After getting the data the researcher will be using the statically technique of standard deviation and t-test for get the significant difference

Abstract

This action research aimed to improve reading skills of the seventh grade of SMPN 5 PADANG by using Story Book. Reading could give the best solution for teacher to improve all of the student’s skill in English. The data will obtain from the observation during the implementation of reading the Story Book, giving a task. This Research will use Car (classroom Action Research) method. The data was qualitative in research. Researcher used Pre-test and Post Test and Interview to collect the result and find. The subject of this research is students of VII 1 Grade of SMP N 5 Padang in Semester 1. This research showed the achievement from Pre-test and Post-test. The score Pre-test (71,40) and Post-test (73,28) as the result from the research. Based on the result and finding it can conclude that Picture Story Book can improve reading skill. This test used narrative text method to make the question test. Picture story book could recommend as a media to teach reading activity. Also based on the interview students showed their interesting in reading activity used picture story book.

Abstract

This research purposed to analyze the Contribution of Reading English Journals to Increase Academic Writing Skills for English Department Students of Putra Indonesia University "YPTK" Padang. This research is a qualitative research with document analysis type. Sampling data was collected using purposive sampling technique. The research sample consisted of 5 participants with a population of 22 participants. The research that researchers conducted is documents analysis of student academic writing assignments, which aims to determine the contribution of reading English journals specifically for English department students to improving academic writing skills. The instruments used in data collection were academic writing tasks of Paper Thesis Writing class. Data analysis used the form of quizzes by Arnold (2017). Based on the research that has been done, it is obtained assignment I <task II, 137 <197, with a total difference of 60 points. So that reading English journals in the Extensive reading class has an effect on increasing student work on the thesis writing scores for students of the English Department of the Putra Indonesia University "YPTK" Padang.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to improve students' skills in writing using pictures for grade VII 1 and VII 2 students at SMP N 3 Sungai Pua in the academic year 2020/2021. This research is an action research. Research members consisted of researchers, English teachers, and class VII 1 , VII 2 students. The research was conducted in two cycles. The steps include reconnaissance, planning, action and observation, and reflection. This research data is qualitative in nature supported by quantitative data. Qualitative data were obtained by observing the teaching and learning process and interviews with English teachers and students VII 1 and VII 2. Qualitative data in the form of field notes and interview transcripts which were analyzed based on qualitative data analysis. Pre-test and post-test were conducted to obtain quantitative data. To analyze quantitative data in the form of students' writing scores, the pre-test and post-test scores were used. The findings show that pictures effectively improve students' skills in writing English. These improvements include: 1) students perceive writing as an easy and interesting lesson, which is shown by their enthusiasm for writing, 2) students are more likely to generate and organize ideas in an orderly manner, 3 ) pictures improve students' writing skills. Researchers found that students' writing skills improved. This can be seen from the main scores of the pre-test and post-test. There was an increase between the pre-test mean (77.6) and the post-test mean (97.07). So it can be concluded that the use of pictures can improve English writing skills.

Abstract

The research questions of this study are: what is the effect of learning to listen using children's songs in class VII SMPN 5 Padang for the 2020/2021 academic year. And how to increase students' understanding of listening skills through children's songs in grade VII at SMPN 5 Padang for the 2020/2021 school year. This research is done to determine the effect of children's songs on improvement listening skills, and to find out how English nursery rhymes can improve their hearing comprehension. In obtaining these data, the authors conducted pre-experimental research at SMP 5 Padang involving 32 students in the class. The author uses one type pre-experimental teaching, namely the pre-test and posttest design of one group. The results showed that there was a significant increase understand students' hearing by using songs as the medium. This is found by comparing the pre-test and post-test scores. Score The pre-test mean score was 3.32, while the post-test mean score was 8.22. Based on the data obtained, the authors concluded that their auditory comprehension improves after being taught use children's songs as a medium, they are also interested and motivated in the learning process. And using songs as a medium to improve their listening really makes them active in class.
