Abstract

English is one of the subjects that the students learn in the school. Although it has been studied since elementary school, English is still one of the subjects that are considered difficult and boring by the students, because English is not their mother tongue. Therefore, teachers in the schools must be creative in teaching English so that the students become interested in learning it. Especially for elementary students, the teachers can teach English by using playing tricks while learning so that it can trigger the students' enthusiasm to learn, so that learning English becomes something fun. One strategy that can be implemented is learning while playing by using Crossword Puzzles. This can add or improve the students' vocabulary in learning English. For this reason, this activity aims to train the students to learn English to be fun by using Crossword Puzzles. The output target of this activity is to help the students in growing their interest in learning English and to help them to improve their English vocabularies in a fun way.

Abstract

Vocabulary is an important thing in English. Therefore, at university vocabulary is a compulsory subject for English language study program. Students cannot speak, write, listen, and read the reading texts when they do not have enough vocabulary to understand them. Thus, students should master vocabulary. The research is a descriptive one. Population is students of UPI YPTK Padang in 2018/2019 academic year. The sample of the research is students of English education faculty. They were thirty four students. The data were collected by using test and questionnaire. The test is given to know students’ ability in vocabulary mastery. It consists of thirty questions. It consists of matching test for giving definition of a word, filling blank space and finding new vocabularies from unarranged letters. The result of the test showed that different abilities of students in mastery vocabulary. The students can find new vocabularies from unarranged letters. This was an interesting activity for them. Then, in matching the vocabularies to the definitions or synonyms, the students also could do it. The questionnaire proved that students have good ability in mastery vocabulary but they have some difficulties related to the some aspects such as grammar and spelling.

Abstract

Translating text is look like an easy work, but it is a complicated job. A translation text may not have different meaning from the source text to the target language of the text. Translating text from Indonesia to English should not change the sense of language since our culture is different from abroad culture. Translating text from Indonesia to English is more difficult than from English to Indonesia. Since, English has grammar where grammar should not be error. Then, translator also should pay attention to word choice of English. The purposes of carrying this research are to know students’ ability in translating text and common errors made by students in translating text from English to Indonesia at English education students of UPI YPTK Padang in 2019/2020 academic year. This research was descriptive one. The sample of this research was 30 students of English study program of UPI YPTK Padang. The data were collected by using test. The result of the test showed that students had different ability in translating text. In general, students’ ability in translating text was categorized good.

Abstract

This paper describes activities in teaching writing by using literature. The literature is diamante poetry. The purposes of this article are the first provide a theoritical discussion about writing sentence after students conduct a poem and provide a sample of lesson plan for teaching writing sentence by using diamante poetry at Elementary School. Teachers can use diamante poetry strategy to make students be able to write sentence. Because writing is important skill and should be taught from the beginning.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze reading texts in English textbooks based on teachers' perceptions. This research data were the reading texts in the student's English textbook of the 2013 curriculum for grade XI semester I. The Source of the data in this research was divided into two. First is the analysis checklist of reading texts in the students' English textbook of the 2013 curriculum for grade XI semester three analysts filled me. Two analysts are the English teachers at different schools that implement the 2013 curriculum, while the other is the researcher herself. Second is the interview with the teacher, who is also one of the analysts, to get more data about the teacher's perception of the reading texts, especially about the strength and weaknesses of the indicator. After the researcher collected and analyzed two pieces of data, she found in this research that reading texts fulfills the good criteria of reading text in terms of interest, authenticity, cultural background knowledge, text layout, text visuals, and values. On the other hand, the lexical knowledge in the reading text is not suitable for the students' level. There are many unfamiliar words found in each reading text. Then, some of the sentences are included in complex sentences that are not suitable for the students' level, especially for the second grade of senior high school students.

Abstract

Sejak pandemi Covid 19 mewabah di dunia termasuk di negara Indonesia, pembelajaran dilakukan secara daring. Hal ini menyebabkan tujuan pendidikan sulit dicapai, khususnya dalam membentuk karakter siswa yaitu berakhlakmulia, sehat, berilmu, cakap, kreatif, mandiri,demokratis serta bertanggung jawab. Berdasarkan alasan ini maka tim dosen UPI YPTK tertarik membuat kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat yang fokus untuk meningkatkan vocabulary Bahasa Inggris yang diintegrasikan dengan pendidikan karakter menggunakan media film berbahasa inggris yang mengandung nilai karakter di youtube. Kegiatan ini diberikan terhadap siswa SD di kelurahan Gunung Pangilun. Bimbingan Belajar dilaksanakan rutin 2 kali seminggu selama 4 bulan. Disamping tatap muka, siswa dibekali sebuah buku pegangan Bahasa Inggris yang berisikan materi dan tugas anak di rumah. Sedangkan untuk pembinaan karakter, siswa dibekali dengan buku kontrol karakter. Dalam proses tatap muka Instruktur mempertontonkan video you tube singkat berbahasa Inggris yang mengandung pesan moral/ karakter. Untuk melihat perubahan tingkah laku siswa, disiapkan buku kontrol yang diisi orang tua. Selama 4 bulan proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, siswa mengalami peningkatan kosakata bahasa Inggris dengan baik. Dari 27 orang siswa yang mengikuti kegiatan pengabdian ini, 9 orang siswa memperoleh peningkatan kosakata bahasa Inggris sangat baik, 8 orang siswa lebih baik, 7 orang siswa dapat menambah kosakata sesuai harapan, dan 3 orang siswa yang tidak mampu menguasai kosakata dengan baik. Sedangkan untuk pendidika karakter, sebanyak 7 orang siswa dapat berubah dengan sangat baik, 8 orang mengalami perubahan karakter lebih baik dan 10 orang belum berkembang sesuai harapan, dan 7 orang sulit untuk berubah.

Abstract

Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PKM) ini adalah salah satu bentuk Tridharma Perguruan Tinggi. PKM ini diusulkan untuk melakukan kegiatan yang bersifat sosialisasi dan edukasi di salah satu Sekolah Dasar Negeri yang ada di Kota Padang Sumatera Barat.Kegiatan ini diusulkan untuk mengedukasikan penggunaan internet sehat bagi Siswa Sekolah Dasar. Kegiatan ini dilakukan dengan melihat penggunaan internet di lingkungan siswa sangat sulit untuk dihambat atau dibatasi. Di era modern saat ini, penggunaan internet tidak hanya bisa dilakukan melalui perangkat komputer, akan tetapi juga bisa diakses melalui perangkat telepon pintar atau smartphone. Maka semakin sulit untuk mengontrol anak dalam penggunaan internet. Akan tetapi banyak dari pengguna internet tersebut tidak sadar akan bahaya dampak negatif yang didapatkan dari internet. Maka dari itu perlu ditingkatkan kewaspadaan dan kesadaran akan bahaya dampak negatif dari internet yang secara tidak sadar dilakukan oleh para pengguna internet, terutama siswa di lingkungan sekolah dasar. Berdasarkan masalah tersebut, maka gagasan sosialisasi dan edukasi penggunaan internet sehat bagi Siswa Sekolah Dasardapat menjadi salah satu sosialisasi pengetahuan dan pembinaan mengenai penggunaan internet sehat bagi pendidikan maupun bagi pelajar.

Abstract

This research aims to explain the types of politeness strategies used by teachers and students in class interactions, how these strategies are manifested in actions in class interactions and pedagogical functions of politeness strategies. The subjects in this study are teachers and students who used politeness strategies as many as 52 students and one teacher in the learning and teaching process. The research is a qualitative research. Data collected through observation and interviews. The results showed that is used by students to talk to the teacher when the meaning of speech is conveyed implicitly. There are four pedagogic functions in politeness strategies, namely giving the distance between teacher and students, atmosphere in class, reducing student tension, and making social interaction between teacher and students.

Abstract

The occurence of using code switching in classroom appears for lecturer to explain topic, it also uses English-Indonesia, the students are difficult to understand when lecturer speaks English. The problem appears for students because of the difficulties to say something. This study aims to determine the factors that influence the use of code switching and the types of code switching used in learning English. The research method is descriptive qualitative. Collecting data by means of interviews, observations and video recordings. Data analysis is used to analyze information related to the use of code switching Indonesian English conversation. The participants of this study were two teachers who had experience of code switching while teaching. This study found five reasons teachers use code switching in teaching and learning English: discussing specific topics, making teaching and learning more practical, managing classes, building social relationships, and encouraging active student participation. From observations found three types of code switching used by teachers. The results showed that the use of code switching in learning English found 3 types of code switching, namely; (1) inter-sentential code switching occurred in 580 data (58%), (2) intra-sentential code switching occurred in 300 data (30%), and (3) Tag-code switching occurred in 127 data (12%). The factors behind the use of code switching in learning English are structural linguistic factors, internal psycholinguistic factors, and external social factors. The most dominant factor behind the occurrence of code switching is the structural linguistic factor, namely students do not master English. The teacher applies code switching to facilitate students to more easily understand the material being presented.

Abstract

Taman Kanak-Kanak sudah memperkenalkan kurikulum kepada siswanya. Pada pendidikan Taman Kanak-Kanak saat ini sudah menggunakan sentra. Seperti sentra bahasa, sentra ibadah, sentra balok, sentra olah tubuh dan sentra balok. Setiap sentra mempunyai peran masing-masing dalam mengembangkan kreativitas anak didik. Sentra bahasa merupakan sentra dimana mengembangkan kemampuan bahasa atau komunikasi anak. Di sentra bahasa inilah anak-anak diperkenalkan bahasa asing yaitu bahasa Inggris. Karena anak-anak pada masa ini adalah masa emas dimana kemampuan meniru mereka sangat besar serta kemampuan bahasa mereka harus dikembangkan. Berdasarkan hal tersebut, maka gagasan unutk menggunakan nyanyi bahasa Inggris dalam mengembangkan kemampuan kosa kata bahasa Inggris siswa di sentra bahasa Taman Kanak-Kanak Tartila Padang. Target luaran dari kegiatan ini adalah membantu siswa dalam menambah kosakata bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan nyanyi.
