Abstract

Technical materials refer to the material which is designed specifically to prepare a specialized career. This research is a descriptive research. The research conducted with an attempt to find out the students’ mastery in using context clue in reading technical material. The subject of the research was twenty students of fourth semester STIBA Persada Bunda Pekanbaru in academic year 2016/2017. The instrument used to collect the data was in the form of objective test. It was found that: (1) the students’ mastery in using synonym clue was in good category. They had problem in mastering synonym clue as they made mistake in taking the clue. (2) The students’ mastery in using antonym clue was in fair category. The problem occurred due to their vocabulary whereas the vocabulary used in technical material is high as it designed for native speaker. (3) The students’ mastery in using definition clue was in good category. The students were able to do the test because the clues were stated clearly. Besides, they also had sufficient experience and background knowledge to deduce meaning. Thus, it can be concluded that the students’ mastery in using context clue in reading technical marerial is needed to be improved because they still had limited vocabulary.

Abstract

Ability to communicate orally in Foreign Language still meets some obstacles for language learners in Indonesia. It seems a hard task to do. The learning experiences on English subject are still not sufficient for the language learners to enable them to communicate in English orally. Some previous studies showed that the students external factors are the obstacle cause their inability to communicate in Foreign Language such as the lack of the vocabulary, law of motivation, the lack amount of practice and the monotonous teaching strategy. However, since the communication process is not only involving the physical aspect, the psychological aspects should be recognized as the potential factor that might hinder students ability to communicate orally in Foreign Language. The present study showed that the students psychological factors, namely apprehension plays the role hinder the students ability to communicate. The findings showed that there were four factors cause the students inability to communicate in English as foreign language, namely 1) the ability on language, 2) the lecturers evaluation, 3) the communication task type, and 4) lecturers feedback.

Abstract

This research was taken based on the students problem to memorize, apply, understand and comprehend the English texts. The students also cannot interpret the authors message. The purpose of this research is to improve the students reading comprehension of the first semester of English Study Program of STKIP Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai. The participants of this research are the first semester students of English Study Program of STKIP Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai. The classroom action research was done in four steps plan, action, observation, and reflection in three cycles. This study shows that Jigsaw Strategy can improve the students reading comprehension. Based on the data, the percentage improve significantly from the first to the third test. The first test, the percentage was 18.92%, then at the second test was 27.03% and at the third test was 45.21%. At the second and third cycles, there was no students could achieved this level, but the percentage directly increase to 35.14%. Therefore, the students reading comprehension can be improved through Jigsaw Strategy.`

Abstract

This paper provides an overview of key issues for EFL autonomous learning. The purpose is a concise summary of ideas that should support more effective learning and develop independent students. The paper first outlines the nature of autonomous learning, particular in academic contexts, pinpoints the knowledge bases needed for EFL learner autonomy and recognize its advantages. From this foundation, a set of research implications for instruction are noted. These implications, in turn, form the basis for recommended teaching practices that will shape autonomous learning. The article concludes by noting the need for additional research to validate, and to provide new insights into, effective learner autonomy.

Abstract

The goal of the QAR strategy is helping the students in reading comprehension actively by analyzing various steps of questions. QAR (Question-Answer Relationships), which helps the students to answer the question based on the text. QAR is the best strategy that helps students in answering question and comprehending the text more effectively. This research was an experimental research. It was conducted at SMA Negeri 2 Koto Kampar Hulu which located on kampar regency. The population of this research was the eight year students of SMP Negeri 2 Koto Kampar Hulu in the second semester. They consisted of 123 students, which divided into 3 classes. The reason to choose eight year students in using QAR technique was this technique appropriate to intermediate level of students. This research focuses of QAR Strategy on students Reading Comprehension. The instrument of this research is reading test. The data collection technique that writer used to analyzed data is t-test. The result of this study is taken from the quantitative data. It can be seen that there is improvement from the score pre-test (47.9) to that of post test (74,82) for experimental class and also the t-table 1.99 is smaller than t-observed 12.4. Moreover, it can be seen that after being taught by using QAR (Question-Answer Relationship) strategy, there is increasing of the students reading comprehension and they can answer the question with more efficiently. The students can analyze how and where to answer the question effectively The results of these tests were taken as data of this research.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the origin of Minangkabau ancestors in Pasambhan Maanta Marapulai Speech produced by ELTA Record Bukittinggi. This study discusses the origin of Minangkabau ancestors found in the video based on myth. In the preparation of this study researchers used descriptive qualitative methods, which is a method that examines an object by explaining the object. Researchers get supporting data from several books that is literature books, bukujurnal, and other books related to this thesis. In analyzing, the researcher explains the implicit meanings contained in the Maanta Marapulate Extended Speech by both the bridegroom and the bridegroom. The results of this study stated that the ancestors of the Minangkabau people came from the third son of Sultan Iskandar Zulkarnain named Maharaja Diraja, Maharaja Diraja sailed through the Indian Ocean and found an island to the west of Sumatra Island. The island is called Perca Island. Or known also by the name Minangkabau, from there Maharaja Diraja see Mount Merapi then Maharaja Royal along with his entourage went to the top of the Mountain. There they first built the Village, the first village named Siligundi Nan Baselo in Pariangan Padang Panjang. Based on the analysis of the story of the origin of Minangkabau ancestors found in the video Maanta Marapulai Supplement, the researchers concluded that the story is a mythical story.
