Abstract

In the process of teaching, teachers must employ various strategies to ensure that students grasp and understand the subjects they are learning. One effective strategy for teaching reading is the Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) approach. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of the STAD technique on improving the reading comprehension scores of students at SMK Kesehatan Assyifa School in Banda Aceh. The sample for this research comprised of twenty-six second-semester grade XI students. The research involved conducting pre-tests and post-tests. The pretest was administered before implementing the STAD strategy and the posttest was conducted after four sessions of STAD treatment. The reading tests encompassed five aspects that aid in enhancing students' reading comprehension; identifying topic sentences, main ideas, details, inferences, synonyms/antonyms, and conclusions. The findings of the study revealed that students improved their reading comprehension through the STAD technique by engaging in discussions with their peers about the issues presented in the reading texts. A comparison of the pretest and posttest results demonstrated that the average score in the posttest was higher than in the pretest. Specifically, the students achieved an average score of 80.19% in the posttest, meeting the criteria for completing the minimum competency standard (KKM) set at 73%. Moreover, the students collaborated in heterogeneous teams to maximize their improvement in each cycle, which fostered a competitive atmosphere in the classroom and heightened students’ motivation to comprehend the reading texts.

Abstract

Despite the fact that incorporating technology into English learning at school has numerous benefits, there are currently very few teachers who have done so. The iPad has been widely used as a learning medium in English language study in various nations. However, using an iPad for English language learning in Banda Aceh is still unusual. Descriptive qualitative research with a case study approach was carried to describe how the teacher uses the iPad in teaching English for the seventh-grade students at SMP Islam Al Azhar Cairo Banda Aceh. An observation sheet and interview guide were used to gather the data. The data analysis was processed in the form of condensation data, display data, and conclusion data which are proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The findings show that some applications were used by the English teacher to support the learning atmosphere, such as; iTunes U App, Keynote App, Pages App, and iTunes U App. Furthermore, the web browsing function is the most commonly used and important feature for students at SMP Islam Al-Azhar Cairo Banda Aceh. It provides quick and easy access to the students and the support it provides for collaboration.

Abstract

Contrastive analysis as a synchronic method in language analysis used in this study to show similarities and differences between languages or dialects in order to solve practical problems related to languages, such as language teaching and translation. Every language has its own rules, which is unique as well as common features. A language shares some the same rules to some extent which benefit English learners to better understand the rules of the target language by knowing the similarities between the language and their target language. This research deals with the descriptions and analyses on Subject-Predicate systems of English and Acehnese languages which shows several similarities and differences. The similar structure found in both language is subject and verb in both languages need an agreement depending on the subject of the sentence.  While the differences can be seen in the position of enclitic of both languages. In Acehnese, the clitics position be found within a verb or a noun. While in English, it appears only within a verb. The example sentences of the two languages have been compared with sufficient examples, making it clear where and how they are identical and different.

Then, the actions, thoughts, words, expressions and other statements regarding the main character were described to find the analytical result. The result shows that the author develops the main character as an innocent little girl who continuously learns many things through life problems faced by his father. Abstract

Feedback is the most essential part in EFL (English as Foreign Language) teaching and learning process. At this stage, students speaking is evaluated so that they know the progress of their learning. This study is aimed at examining the application of teachers’ corrective feedback in classroom interactions. The research used qualitative methods and it used observation sheets and audio recorders. The writer collected data through observations to generate the main data and through interviews to support the primary data. The sample for this study consisted of 34 students and two English teachers. Data were analyzed by a qualitative procedure based on the Mile and Huberman (2013) model. This includes data reduction, data display, and inference. Results showed that the most common corrective feedback used by teachers in classroom interactions was recast, occurring 66.7% or 64 times in the class. Interviews revealed that there were three reasons for using corrective feedback are to help students avoid mistakes; to improve students' grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation; and to motivate students to learn English better
