Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the description of The students’ free writing toward ICT as media in English learning on midwifery students of STIKES Pembina. The sample of this research was taken by using totaling sampling technique with 36 midwifery students from STIKES Pembina, that consist of 13 students from 2nd semester students and 23 students from 4th semester. The data was obtained based on every meeting during online learning, that was from the third meeting to the seventh meeting that consists of 5 days for obtaining the data. Then from the data analysis, it’s obtained that there was the good improvement response by writing English related to the material since the frist day to the fifith day that was 63% of students response to the 95% students response in the last day. During the implementation of online learning by using ICT (whatssapp group and edlink) the obstacle raised on students. Many factor that made the students can’t join the class and response. One of the factor was the access on internet in their hometown. Even had the obstacle the use of ICT can be good choice in conducting the teaching and learning EFL proces of midwifery students of STIKES Pembina PalembangKeywords: free writing and ICT.

Abstract

This study was conducted to find out whether or not there was significant difference in reading comprehension between those students who were taught by using guided reading and those students who were not at the eleventh grade students of Ethika Senior High School of Palembang. The sample of the study was 68 students of the eleventh grade students of SMA Ethika Palembang n the academic year of 2015/2016 that were taken by using intact sampling technique. Thirty four students were in the exerimental group and thirty four students were in the control group. Experimental research by using quasi-experimental was used. The used instrument was in the form of 30 items of multiple choice questions. The results of the test were analyzed by using t-test (paired sample t-test and independent t-test). The result of paired sample t-test from experimental group was 7.165, it was more than t-table 2.0322 with df was 34 students. Based on independent sample t-test analysis, it was found that t-obtained was  2.556 at the significant level p<0.05 (5%). The critical value of test was 1.9955 with df was 68 students, so that 2.556 >1.995. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It could be concluded that there was significant difference in students’ reading comprehension between those students who were taught by using guided reading and those who were not.Keywords: Improving, Reading Comprehension, and Guided Reading

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the fundamental components learned in language learning. The teachers should prepare good English materials to support the students’ learning activities during vocabulary instruction. Kahoot Online application and Google Form can be used as learning alternative to facilite the process of vocabulary instruction. This study was intended to find out (1) the students’ vocabulary achievement after being treated with Kahoot Online and Google and (2) the significant difference in implementing Kahoot Online Application and Google Form toward students’ vocabulary comprehension enhancement. The researcher used quasi-experimental method to conduct the research. The population of this study were all elementary students of SD Manggala in academic year 2020/2021. All fourth grade students had been involved in this study as the sample. The sample of this study used purposive sampling. The independent sample t-test results showed that the value significance (2-tailed) 0.096 was higher than the value significance 0.05. While, the value of t-obtained (1.319) was lower than t-table (1.6909) with degree of freedom was 34. In other words, there was no any significant difference on vocabulary comprehension between the third grade students of SD Manggala who were taught by using Kahoot Online Application strategy and Google Form (Vocabulary Quiz). Keywords: Kahoot Online Application, Google Form, Vocabulary Comprehension

Abstract

This study highlighted the implementation of jigsaw strategy to improve eleventh graders’ reading comprehension at SMA Karya Ibu Palembang. Jigsaw is one of learning strategies under cooperative learning method that promotes group work and problem solving practice among the group members. This strategy encourages each member to focus on solving a given task in a reading practice. The objective of this study was to find out whether or not jigsaw strategy could significantly improve students’ reading comprehension of explanation text. It examined the influence of Jigsaw strategy on students’ reading achievement. Pre-experimental research design was administered as the research method since it had no control group involved. 35 students of eleventh grade that categorized low in reading achievement, participated as the sample of this study. A reading comprehension test, consisting of 20 items of multiple choice, used as the data collection technique. The obtained data was analyzed using Paired Sample T-Test. Research finding showed that Jigsaw strategy could significantly improve students’ reading comprehension.  The result of Paired Sample T-Test revealed that the value of t-obtained (8.864) was higher than the value of t-table (2.032) and the significance level (2-tailed) was 0.000. It indicated that jigsaw strategy contributed significant influence toward students’ reading comprehension.Keywords: jigsaw, reading comprehension, cooperative learning

Abstract

This study focused on finding out the correlation between reading comprehension and writing ability. This study was conducted using correlation research design. The population of this study investigated the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 11 Palembang with the total number were 482 students. In selecting the sample of this study, cluster random sampling technique was implemented. There were 147 students participated as the sample. The writer collected data by using two instruments from reading and writing test. The result of this study showed that the level of students’ comprehension reading was in the average category. The analysis result showed the mean score of reading comprehension was 61.80. The level of students’ writing ability was in the average category. The analysis result showed the mean score of students’ writing ability was 6.2713. In analyzing the data of the correlation analysis it was found that there is a significant correlation between reading comprehension and writing ability. The results of this study showed that the correlation coefficient level between reading comprehension and writing ability was 0.323 with the significance value 0.000 that lower alpha value 0.05. Thus, reading comprehension gave positive contribution to students’ ability in writing.Keywords: reading comprehension, writing ability, and correlation

Abstract

Writing is one of the most difficult skill that foreign language learners are expected to acquire the mastery of a variety of linguistics, cognitive and sociocultural competencies. The aim of this study was to find out whether there was significant correlation or not between self-effficacy and writing achievement. The research used quantitativr mrthod by using correlation analysis . The population was the tenth grade students with the total 44 students from 2 classes of SMA Arinda Palembang. To select the sample of this study, cluster random sampling technique was implemented. There were 23 students as the sample. The data was gained from students’ self-efficacy questionnaire and their writing test. In analyzing the data, correlation analysis was used. Based on the statistical analysis, it was found that  the correlation coefficient level between self-efficacy and writing achievement was 0.346 with the sig. value was higher than 0.106. In conclusion, there was no significant correlation betweeen students’ self-efficacy and writing achievement.Keywords:  self-efficacy, writing achievement

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out whether or not there was any significant difference in speaking skill between the students’ who were taught by using Round Robin technique and those who were not. The population was all the tenth-grade student of SMK Pertanian Pembangunan Negeri Sembawa in the academic year 2019/2020 consisting of 130 students. The writers used purposive sampling technique in choosing the sample. There were 66 students of tenth grade students of SMK-PPN Sembawa involved in this study as the sample. They were divided into two groups, experimental and control groups, consisting of 33 students for each group. The method used quasi non-equivalent group design. Spoken test was used to collect the data.  Furthermore, the result of the data was analysed using independent sample t-test. The result showed that the mean score of experimental group increased from 70.88 in pre-test to 78.67 in post-test. The result of data analysis showed that the t-obtained was 2.625 and it was higher than t-table 1.9977. It meant that there was a significant difference between experimental and control group in speaking skill. The students who were taught using Round Robin technique could perform better in speaking skill than the students who were not taught using this technique. Keywords: Round Robin technique, speaking skill, descriptive text

Abstract

Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach (CALLA) model was used in defining about assumptions, beliefs, and theories about the nature of language and language learning. This study applied experimental research with factorial design. The population of this study was all the students of Accounting program in Politeknik Sekayu. 80 students of Accounting program participated in this study, taken by by using two stage random sampling. Test and a ready-made questionnaire of motivation were applied to obtain the data. The analysis was used t-test and two way ANOVA. Based on the finding of the result score of the motivation questionnaire in experimental group showed that 50% students had high motivation and 50 % students had low motivation. The distribution of CALLA scores were normal, since significant value was higher than 0.05. The data of CALLA and conventional model were homogenous since the result of homogeneity of variance testing indicated that significant value of all the data were higher than the significant of p-value 0.05.The result of analysis test of two ways ANOVA showed that there was a significant interaction effect of CALLA and motivation toward the First Semester of Accounting Program Students’ Hortatory Exposition writing ability at Politeknik Sekayu, since the significant value was 0.006 lower than 0.05. Keywords:CALLA model, motivation, writing ability

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out whether or not there was a significant correlation between pronunciation and listening achievement of English education study program students of Tridinanti University and how much pronunciation contributed to listening achievement of English study program students of Tridinanti University. In this study, the researchers used correlation analysis. The population of this study was all English education study program students of Tridinanti University. The researchers used purposive sampling, and the sample was 53 students taken from the 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th semester. Pronunciation and listening achievement tests were used as the instruments. The finding showed that the pearson correlation coefficient was 0,086. It means that p-value (0.539) was higher than 0.85 which indicated that there was very low correlation between pronunciation and listening achievement of English education study program students of Tridinanti University. The regression analysis revealed that the significance value (ρ) was 0.284. It was higher than alpha value (α) 0.05 which indicated that students’ pronunciation gave a positive contribution toward their listening achievement and the value of R Square was 0.022. It could be concluded that students’ pronunciation contributed as much as 2.2 % toward their listening achievement.Keywords: correlation, pronunciation, listening achievement.

Abstract

Reading comprehension  is the act of understanding of a text. It means that reader can understand the meaning, main idea, topic and summary of the text. Experience –Text – Relationship (ETR) is a strategy that draws on backgroud knowledge, prior knowledge and experience. The objective of this research were to find out whether or not there was any significant improvement in reading comprehension of narrative text by using ETR method, and to find out whether or not there was any significant difference in students’ reading comprehension of narrative text between thoso who were taught by using ETR method and those who were not. This research involved 70 students as the sample, chosen by using purposive sampling technique. There were two groups involved, experimental and control group. Each group consisted of 35 students. A reading test was used to obtain the data for pretest and post-test. The obtained data were analyzed by using Paired Sample T-test and Independent-Sample T-test. Based on Paired Sample T-test, it was found that there was significant improvement on experimental students’ reading comprehension. Furthermore, based on the Independent Sample T-test, it was found that there was significant difference on reading comprehension between the students who were taught by using ETR method and those who were not.Keywords: reading comprehension, tenth graders, ETR method
