Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is an individual's skill in using words of a language. Reading comprehension is the act of understanding of a text. Reader can understand the meaning, main idea, topic and summary of the text by mastering vocabulary. The objectives of this study were to find out whether or not there was a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Indralaya and to find out in how much the vocabulary mastery contributes toward reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students. This study used a correlational research design. This study involved 65 students as the sample chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected by  vocabulary mastery test and reading comprehension test. The techniques for analyzing the data were correlational analysis and regression analysis. The results of study found that there was a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the eleventh-grade students since p-value (0.049) was lower than 0.05. Then, the rvalue was 0.245 that showed as weak or low correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the eleventh grade Students. Vocabulary mastery also gave contribution to reading comprehension as much as 6 %. Keywords: vocabulary mastery, reading comprehension, explanation text

Abstract

Listening skill is one of language skills which is crucial to promote language users’ communicative competences. It is essential for the teachers to utilize appropriate media to create a supportive learning atmosphere.Podcast as one of ICT tools can be optimized to provide the students with periodical listening sources to help practicing the student’s listening skill. This research explored Podcast utilization in listening class and aimed at finding out whether or not Podcast utilization could enhance students’ listening comprehension and compare the students’ listening comprehension between the students who were taught using Podcast and the students who were not taught using Podcast. A quasi experimental research was applied as the research design. This research involved eighty-eight students selected using purposive sampling technique. Listening comprehension test was administered to obtain the data. The obtained data were analyzed by using Paired Sample T-test and Independent Sample T-test. The result of Paired Sample T-test showed that there was a significant progress in student listening comprehension after they got treatment by using Podcast. The result of Independent Sample T-test revealed that the progress of experimental group exceeded the progress of control group in their listening comprehension. It proved that utilizing Podcast could enhance students’ listening skills.Keywords:Podcast, listening skills, ICT utilization

Abstract

The widespread use of the internet brings impact to education and provides the solution for many educational institutions to conduct online learning during Covid-19 pandemic.This study aimed to determine students’ perception in using Zoom application during online learning in Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at Tridinanti University Palembang. Descriptive quantitative survey method was carried out. This study involved 104 students who experienced online learning by using Zoom Application. For collecting the data, questionnaire was used and distributed online to the students. Most students perceived positively toward the use of Zoom application during online learning. The results of this study showed that: (1) Using Zoom application during online learning gave students new learning experience and benefits, (2) Zoom application offers some features that can be easily operated by the users, (3) Zoom application became online learning platform preference, (4)  Using Zoom application could improve students ICT skill, (5) The use of Zoom application during online learning would be continuously used by students, and (6) Students did not find serious problem to participate in online learning using Zoom application. In brief, Zoom Application is an effective educational technology tool for online learning.Keywords:perception, online learning, Zoom application

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not using POSSE Strategy was to find out whether there was a significant difference in students’ reading comprehension between the students who were taught using POSSE strategy and those who were not. There were 80 tenth-grade students taken as the sample selected using purposive sampling, with one group serving as the experimental class and the other serving as the control class. The writers gave pre-test and post-test for experimental and control classes to collect data. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The experimental group was taught using POSSE strategy, while the control group was taught using the discussion strategy. The experimental group's mean score increased from 68.10 in the pre-test to 75.87 in the post-test. Furthermore, the results of independent t-tests from the experimental and control groups revealed that the t-value obtained was 3.060, which was higher than the t-table value of 1.664. It means that the POSSE strategy was effective in improving reading comprehension achievement of the tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 11 PalembangKeywords:reading comprehension, descriptive text, POSSE  strategy

Abstract

Fix-Up strategy is an effective strategy to develop the students’ creativity in thinking and expand their knowledge because they are connecting what is stated in the text and what have been ever experienced that could help increasing their reading comprehension. The aimsof this study were to find out whether or not there was a significant improvement of students’ reading comprehension achievement through fix-up strategy and to find out whether or not there was a significant difference instudents’ reading comprehension achievement between students who were taught by using Fix-Upstrategy and those who were not. The population was the eighth-graders of SMP Binatama with total number 127.Toselectthe sample of this study, purposive sampling technique was implemented.There were 64 students as sample. The data were obtained from students’reading comprehension test in recount text. In analyzing the data,paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test were used. The result of paired sample t-test showed that t-obtained(16.435)was higher than t-table (0.296) and the results of independent sample-test showed that t-obtained (6.697) was higher than t-table (0.296). It can be concluded that there was a significant improvement of reading comprehension through Fix-Upstrategy and there was a significant difference in students’ reading comprehension between the students who were taught by using Fix-Upstrategy and those who were not.Keywords:promoting, fix-up strategy, reading comprehension

Abstract

One of the student's obligations as a graduation requirement is to write a thesis. Scientific writing is written work that is systematically arranged according to certain rules according to the results of scientific thinking. There are several types of scientific work reports, namely: research reports, scientific works, dissertations, and proposals.  Abstract is an important part of a scientific work located on the first page of a scientific paper.Abstract is a brief description of a scientific work, background, questions, methods used, results obtained, conclusions, and recommendations. This paper discussed the results of the analysis of the errors in English abstract of postgraduate students STIK Bina Husada Palembang majoring Public Health Study Program in Scientific Writing Course. The design of this type of research was observational with a descriptive approach. The aim was to collect data through observation of scientific documents which aims to explain the feasibility of writing the English abstracts. 100% abstracts were appropriate in giving background detail, 70% were appropriate in describing the research activity and stating the conclusion, while reporting result only 60% and 40% describing the methods were appropriate. Google Translate sometimes cannot convert the word meanings appropriately, such as Posyandu, Gasurkes, and Perwali. The students must recheck their work and not rely solely on the translation application.Keywords:error, analysis, scientific papers

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out whether or not there was any significant correlation between students’ habit in listening to English songs and their vocabulary mastery of the eleventh graders of SMA Negeri 10 Palembang and to measure how much students’ habit in listening to English songs contributed to their vocabulary mastery. The sample of this study was 80 students taken by purposive sampling technique. The method used in this study was correlational study. The instruments to collect the data were questionnaire and test. In analyzing the data, the writers used Pearson Product Moment and regression analysis. The result of correlation analysis showed that the r-value (0.818) was higher than r-table (0.344) at the level of probability (p) significance with sig.2-tailed (0.000) was lower than the alpha value (0.05). It can be concluded that there was a significant correlation between students’ habit in listening to English songs and their vocabulary mastery. The result of regression analysis showed that value of R2 was 0.669 and p-value (0.000) was lower than α-value (0.05). It indicated students’ habit in listening English songs positively contributed to their vocabulary mastery as much 66.9%.Keywords: listening habit, English songs, vocabulary mastery

Abstract

In writing English essay, the students often face the problem. One of the causes as there was no appropriate method to be used to explore their ideas or paradigm. The opinion essay was one of the good ways to be used in overcoming the problem. The objective of this research was to see the differences in students’ writing achievement on nursing students between those who were taught using opinion essay and those who were not. A quasi-experimental method was used, with a non-equivalent group design for the pre-test and posttest. The samples consisted of 50 fifth-semester students of conversion nursing students from STIK Bina Husada. An essay writing test was utilized to collect data. The data were obtained by using pre and post writing test. The score of writing in control group in post test was 70 and in experiment group with the highest score was 92.The mean difference of post-test from both groups was 12.88, standard error difference was 1.68, and t-obtained was 7.46 at a significant level of p<0.05. From the result it can be concluded that the use of opinion essays leads the students to explore more ideas, point of view and paradigm into English written essays and this method can be used by lecturer to enhance the student’ writing achievement of STIK Bina Husada PalembangKeywords:opinion essay, writing achievement

Abstract

Vocabulary is central to learning of foreign language at primary level. Every person need vocabulary to express their ideas especially in English, even in a simple of conversation. The purpose of this study was to find out whether or not there was any significant difference in English Vocabulary to between the fifth students of SD Xaverius 9 Palembang who were taught by using Riddles Game and those who were not. The method in this study was quantitative research with quasi-experimental for control group and experimental group. The sample of this study was fifty seven students of the fifth grade of SD Xaverius 9 Palembang in academic year 2018/2019. The data were analyzed by using independent sample ttest. The result of Independent Sample t-test showed that the value of t-obtained (6.540) > the value of t-table (1.673) with the significance value (0.00) was lower than the alpha value (0.05). It means that there was a significant difference in English vocabulary to the students of SD Xaverius 9 Palembang between who were taught by using Riddles game and those who were not.Keywords: vocabulary, Riddles game

Abstract

The study's objectives were to determine: (1) whether or not there was any significant achievement on students' reading comprehension between students who were taught by PSRA Strategy, (2) whether or not there was any significant achievement on students' reading comprehension who were taught by QAR Strategy, and (3) whether or not there was any significant difference in students' reading comprehension achievement between students who were taught by PSRA and QAR Strategy. The population consisted of all tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Muara Payang in the academic year 2021/2022. The samples involved two groups, selected using purposive sampling, consisting of 32 students for each group. This study used a quasi-experimental design The test as data collection was given as pre-test and post-test. The findings revealed that both PSRA and QAR strategy had a significant impact on students' reading achievement in each class. Based on the data, the students' mean post-test score in the experimental group who were taught using the PSRA was 84.63 and the students' mean post-test score in the control group who were taught using the QAR was 79.70. Based on the independent sample t-test analysis, the t-obtained (3.216) was found to be greater than the t-table (1.671), indicating that there was a significant difference in students' reading comprehension achievement between those taught utilizing PSRA Strategy and those taught utilizing QAR Strategy.
