Abstract

Statistics show that Nigeria has 10.5 million out-of-school children (OOSC), the highest figure in the globe. This study investigated the media frames and framing strategies of OOSC in Punch, Vanguard, and Daily Trust Newspapers. Using qualitative content analysis, the study adopted van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) alongside the thematic and episodic positions of Framing Theory. Analysis showed five media frames and six framing strategies for OOSC. For media frames, OOSC were represented as vulnerable and poor victims; silenced voices; children sprouting from state and policy failure; children sprouting from non-state actors’ failure, as well as children in crisis and need of collaborative responses. For framing strategies, we found source avoidance as a means of masking negativity, authoritativeness as a framing strategy, positive self-presentation, and negative other-presentation, apportioning blame, and foregrounding, alongside direct and implied metaphors. Journalists used these representations to frame opinions and influence people’s perceptions of the OOSC menace. The study recommends that media houses always explore ways of actualizing the truth efficacy of news reportage, and write stories about OOSC more thematically.

Abstract

Bureaucratic behavior is the main benchmark for achieving effective public services and assesses the government's most visible performance. Every act of bureaucrats always has social motives in providing administrative services. This study aims to determine the form of social behavior of bureaucrats in providing population administration services in rural areas through a sociological perspective. This research is located in Palakka Village, Barru District, Barru Regency. The method used is a qualitative approach with a descriptive type. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 12 informants in the village. The results of this study indicate that the social background of rural communities is both a supporter and an obstacle to the performance of bureaucrats in rural areas. Social behavior that emerges from bureaucrats in rural areas is more likely to lead to value-oriented rational actions. Every behavior that appears responds to every situation faced in population administration services for people in rural areas.

Abstract

This study is intended to describe the influence of patriarchal culture during the pregnancy of the mother, especially in rural farming households. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method in the context of the "Phenomenology" paradigm. Determination of informants is done intentionally. Research informants consisted of mothers who have children, pregnant women and their husbands, and medical officers (midwives). Primary data sources were obtained directly through interviews with informants and the results of field observations. Data collection is done through (a) direct interviews and (b) observation. Data validation was carried out by triangulation to determine the accuracy of the method used and the accuracy of the data obtained. The results showed that in poor households in rural areas the influence of patriarchal culture during the mother's pregnancy can be seen in (1) Domestic activities in which men are still in important control of the household. In this activity, pregnant women are treated like non-pregnant mothers, as they continue to do household chores until it is close to the time to give birth. (2) Public activities, pregnant women are still directly involved in land or garden cleaning. (3) The husband's trust in taboo matters about eating, especially for pregnant women, so that pregnant women lack nutritional intake. (4) The attitude of the husband towards the mother's pregnancy, in which they consider that the mother's pregnancy is a natural thing and becomes the mother's own business. (5) Husband's support for pregnant women to carry out pregnancy care is still very lacking.

Abstract

Professional ethics is the most important issue nowadays and should be considered in e-learning more than in face-to-face education. This study was conducted by the hermeneutic phenomenology of the lived experience of e-learning graduate students who had registered virtually. Seven students were selected by Purposeful sampling. The selection of participants was done voluntarily. The interviews were conducted I September 2020 to July 2021. The data collection method was a virtual semi-structured interview and the interview analysis method was Diekelmann, Allen Tanner. Lincoln and Guba's criteria were used to ensure the Credibility, Transferability, and Dependability of the data. The main theme was “ethics of emphasis on words and neglected in action”, which was obtained from three sub-themes: “intentional and unintentional plagiarism”, “student exploitation” and “disregard for human dignity”. The present study showed that academic dishonesty had been experienced by students and this event affects the opinions about the quality of e-learning courses and even the reputation of the institutions offering these courses. It is suggested that more research be done in this field to identify the influential layers of faculties 'behavior on students' attitudes and performance.

Abstract

The role of language in the recently conducted May 2022 Philippine national elections could not be underestimated. For the presidential candidates, language became very functional in expressing their platform and governmental advocacies for the public. Post-election, language still became purposive when former Vice President Leni Robredo, who was defeated in the presidential elections, delivered her post-election speech and expressed her sentiments regarding her loss in the candidacy. This research analyzes the various face-saving discursive strategies in Robredo’s post-election speech using Brown and Levinson’s (1987) Politeness Theory. The researcher used discourse analysis to shed light on how Robredo used language during her post-election speech at the thanksgiving event dedicated to her supporters. The analysis of the 21-minute video recording of her speech reveals that her strategies involved accepting defeat, throwing indirect mudslinging, showing optimism or positivity, emphasizing progress, and avoiding the mentioning of opponents’ names. The conduct of this research is useful in the analysis of political speeches and in elucidating more understanding of the functionality of language for election purposes.

Abstract

A great deal of emphasis has been placed on the development of communication competencies among students in light of the significance of effective communication in the 21st century. Past studies identified communication apprehension (CA) as one factor that hindered learners’ ability to communicate effectively. This study used a qualitative, phenomenological method involving six (6) participants who have lived experience of CA in a unique Chinese context, the Sino-Foreign Joint Venture, a concept that promotes cooperation of foreign educational institutions with China’s educational services industry. In-depth interviews, essays of the participants’ experiences, stimulated recall, and classroom observation has been employed. The video-recorded interviews were carried out as the primary method of data collection. The results revealed eight themes identified as anxiety-provoking classroom situations, namely, level of difficulty and familiarity with the topic, incomprehensible input, preparation, interpersonal evaluation and criticism, voluntary speaking and being asked to, making mistakes and losing face, classroom oral presentations, and oral language assessment and rate of recurrence. This study throws in user input to sensitize Sino-Foreign higher education institutions, curriculum developers, and teachers to the debilitating influence of communication apprehension on language learners.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to review the crucial debate about undertaking a literature review and adopting an epistemological position in doing a grounded theory study. By relying on existing knowledge about the subject, three main Grounded Theory Approaches are discussed: Glaserian, Straussian, and Constructivist Grounded Theory Methodology. All of them differ somewhat both in adopting an epistemological stance that fits well with their research strategy and conducting a literature review at the earlier stages of the research process. The paper contributes to enhancing knowledge about Glaser’s dictum of ‘getting started’ which seems to be misunderstood by those who still misunderstand the Grounded Theory Methodology (GTM) orthodoxy version.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic created an atmosphere of global uncertainty that challenged established assumptions and ways of life. Amid the uncertainty, most people turned to mass and social media for updates, direction and, especially during lockdowns, companionship. An earlier study of the Kari-kasa community shows their total disdain for modernity including the mass media: radio, television and newspaper. The question then arises: was the Kari-kasa able to sustain this disdain during a pandemic that turned most people to the media? To what extent did the community uphold its aversion to modernity in the face of a crippling pandemic? Employing classical ethnographic field methods of focus group discussion (FGD), observation, in-depth and key informant interviews, this study established a reasonable level of Covid-19 awareness among the Kari-kasa members, some of whom seemed to be modifying their belief system to conform to social pressure. They largely declined Covid-19 safety rules believing it was not obligatory. The nature of their information-seeking behavior breeds information disorder and infodemic within their micro-community. The Kari-kasa appeared to be left behind in government efforts on Covid-19 containment communication interventions. It is therefore recommended that specific behavior change communication intervention be targeted at conservative marginal and hidden communities such as Kari-kasa just like it is for the Amish. Also, since Kari-kasa members exhibit ideological belief rather than behavioral belief explained in theory, behavior change interventions targeted at such groups should pay attention to this influential factor for the intervention to be compatible with their belief.
