Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to clarify the relation between characteristics of sediments andenvironmental condition based on the analysis of surface sediment samples and total suspendedsediments from the Southern of Bagan Estuary which is located on the East Coast of SumateraIsland, Indonesia. Surface sediment samples and total suspended sediments were collected at 21stations using sediment sampler and van dorm sampler, respectively, in June 2010. The sampleswere analyzed by various analytical approaches i.e. mechanical grain size analysis, ignitionloss method, bulk chemical analysis using atomic absorption spectrometer and sand-graincomposition analysis. In general, the estuary area is characterized by finer sediments (medium-grained sand), by the lower values of organic matters (less than10%), and by the higher contentof Fe and Al per non calcareous clastic content, which is an index of terrigenous material inputrespectively. Concentration of total suspended sediment near bottom is higher than that ofsurface water, indicating sediments turbulented by strong current system. Judging from thedistribution pattern of the Fe and K contents at surface sediment, terrigenous materials weretransported northwestward along the coast of Pekaitan Village and of Barkey Island by strongebb current. Contrastingly, terrigenous materials were transported southeastward along thearea located between coast of Pekaitan Village and of Barkey Island by strong tide current.Geographical distribution of sand grain composition (lithogenous) strongly indicate thatterrigenous materials derived from the hinterland of Sumatera Island discharged through RokanRiver to the Southern of Bagan Estuary. In addition to, terrigenous materials are also resultedfrom coast erosion of Pekaitan Village and of Barkey Island, and turbulented sediments.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the maximum precipitation intensity changes between theperiod 2002 - 2009 and know the drainage capacity to accommodate the maximum rainfallintensity. This research was conducted in the Village District Town Dumai, Dumai City who isprone to occurrence of inundation / flooding during rain. The research method using descriptiveof an explorative approach that aims to describe the condition and status of the phenomenon ofthe drainage channel and residential environment. The results showed that rainfall intensity forrainfall duration 30 minutes with 10-year anniversary when obtained at 257.999 mm / hour. Thecalculation of drainage channels that can accommodate a maximum flow rate / peak dischargecontained in SP1 primary drainage and secondary drainage channels SS1, SS4, and SS11. Theinability of other drainse channel accommodate the maximum flow causing inundation /flooding, in addition to blockage of drainage channels by the waste also adds to the severity ofthe situation

Abstract

A qualitative research was conducted to analyze values of local wisdom of Pekandanganculture in Kuantan Singingi Regency. This study is a qualitative research. Data are collectedthrough observation, documentation, and dept interview with the key informans including thechief Pekandangan Kerbau and society leader. The result of this study shows the following :The culture Pekandangan Kerbau contains the values local traditions or local wisdom are : (1)there are mudhole in perkandangan area (2) insect bite protection (3) there are protector treesin perkandangan area, (4) as the use of half dried log (mati koro), (5) the use of hard wood,buffaloes’ dirt for firewood; (6) the knowledge of hungry buffalo, (7) the consumtion of thehealth traditional food and (8) Mandawai is community working together (gotong royong). Thelocal wisdom is useful for the environment base development

Abstract

The newspaper-sellers are one of informal sector workers who are susceptible to suffer respiratorysystem diseases affected by traffic air pollutant’s exposure. This study was aimed to desribe theprevalence of abnormality of Peak Expiratory Flowmetry Rate (PEFR) value among newspaper-sellers at traffic-lights in Pekanbaru and factors which were influenced. The study was held usinganalytic cross sectional disaign among 108 newspaper-sellers at 14 points of traffic-lights inPekanbaru. Interviewed and pyhsical examanination were done to the respondents to excludesubjects whom having respiratory illness which might caused by other causes inspite of traffic airpollutan’s exposure. The level of SO2, NO2 and PM10 as traffic air pollutants at those traffic-lightshad been examined by an officer from Laboratorium Udara Bappedalda Kota Pekanbaru usingmulti gas detector and lighthouse handheld 3016 IAQ. The PEFR value was examined by usingmini peak flowmeter. There were only 25 respondents fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria. ThePEFR value was 327,2 + 81,3 litre/minute. The prevalence of abnormality PEFR value was 52%among respondents. There were not association between age (p 0,165), sex (p 0,645), smokinghabit (p 0,286), length of work (p 0,541) and duration of exposure in a day (p 0,55) to theprevalence of abnormality of PEFR value among the respondents.

Abstract

Observation was conducted to analyze the different density of Diadema setosum urchin in theseveral condition of coral reef in Mapur Island of Riau Archipelago Province, from 16 until31 July 2010. The result showed that density of urchin increase by decreasing coral cover.Density of sea urchins Diadema setosum were found 8.8 ind/m2 in the highest percentagecoral cover, i.e. 84.62%, and followed by 22.46 ind/m2 urchin in 59.74 % coral cover, and32.06 ind/m2 urchin in the condition of coral cover 35.15%. The different results amongthree research station may be coused by available of D. setosum.

Abstract

Schlumberger geoelectric configuration can be applied to investigate the presence anddistribution of detergent waste water below the surface. The resistivity of detergent provide alarge response at near point where the water sprinkler, while the resistivity decreases at point farfrom the water sprinkler. The resistivity value of the pure water, pure detergent and grossdetergent are 20.0 Ohm.m, 12.4 Ohm.m and 11.2 Ohm.m, respectively for the measurement ofthe track AB, while the values of resistivity for the measurement of track CD are 16.8 ohm.m,13.3 ohm.m, and 10.9 ohm.m, respectively

Abstract

This study have been conducted in Kecamatan Pekanbaru Kota, on October-December 2009. Theaim of this research is to know relationship of the community behavior towards free larva index(ABJ) and dengue haemorrhagic fever (DBD). The relationship among education level andeconomy status of community with behavior monitoring free larva index (ABJ) were significant.The others factors (knowledge, attitude, available of infrastructure, and instruction) were notsignificant.
