Abstract

This research was carried out to investigate the modality used in beauty product advertisements on Instagram caption. The objective of the research was to describe the types of modality used in beauty product advertisements on Instagram caption. The data of this research was the clauses consisting of modality used in beauty product advertisements which are taken from official account of three local brands on Instagram. Descriptive qualitative method was used in this research. The instrument of this research was observation. The types of modality were analyzed by using the theory of Carrettero (2007). In this research was found four types of modality. The types were found in this research, namely Epistemic, Deontic, Dynamic, and Boulomaic.Keywords: Types of Modality, Beauty Product Advertisements, Instagram Caption

Abstract

This study deals with the discourse marker in Joko Widodo’s Speeches in KTT APEC CHINA in 2015. This study attampted to investigate the domaint elements of Discourse Marker of Joko Widodo speeches in KTT APEC in CHINA 2015, the type and how discourse marker are coded in the president Joko Widodo specches in KTT APEC in CHINA 2015. The study was conducted by quantitative design. The data in this study were the vidio of JOKO widodo’s Speeches in KTT APEC in China 2015 which got 102 clauses from the vidio. The clauses were transcribed in order to be analyzed. In relation to the problems of the study, the purpose of the study is to find the types of discourse markers and to elaborate the reasons of occurrence of discourse markers used the speech based on situational context. And this research was using descriptive qualitative method. From the data analysis and findings, there were four categories from discourse markers found in Joko Widodo speeches they are interpersonal category, referential categories, structural category and cognitive category,  and the dominant category found was cognitive category.Keywords: Discourse Markers, Speeches and Types, KTT APEC

Abstract

In accordance with translation, the metaphors must be translated very carefully in order to avoid misunderstanding. Larson (1984:250) states that If metaphors from source language are translated literally into the target language, they will often be completely misunderstood. Because the translation cannot simply reproduce, or be, the original. In fact, in the folklores there are still literally in translating the text. The aims of this study were to describe the realization of translation strategies in the translation live metaphors in the Sumatera Folklores. The research was conducted by using qualitative design. The data of this study were live metaphors in the Sumatera Folklores. The source of data were 15 folklores in Sumatera. The data were collected through documentary technique and the instrument for collecting the data was documentary sheet. The technique of data analysis was descriptive. The findings of this study revealed that the realization of translation strategies in live metaphors in the Sumatera Folklores into English by applying two process, namely: Single Strategy (91.83%), Double Strategies (8.16%). Metaphors often become the problem in translation and in accordance with translation, the metaphors must be translated from source language (SL) into target language (TL) in order to avoid misunderstanding. Keywords: Translation Strategies, Live Metaphor, Sumatera language, Folklores

Abstract

This research deals with the using of speech acts in Indonesia Lawyers Club (ILC): KPK vs Novanto: Berpacu dengan Waktu. The objectives of this research were: (1) to investigate the types of speech acts used by Karni Ilyas in ILC “KPK vs Novanto: Berpacu dengan Waktu”, (2) to describe the way of performing speech acts realized by Karni Ilyas, and (3) to explain the reasons why those types of speech acts are realized by Karni Ilyas. The research applied descriptive qualitative method. The source of data in this research was taken from Indonesia Lawyers Club (ILC) “KPK vs Novanto: Berpacu dengan Waktu” video. The instrument used for collecting the data was the observation by recorded the utterances of Karni from seven parts of videos. The data were clauses contained of Speech Acts used by Karni. The findings of this study showed that: 1) There were three types of speech acts, namely locutionary act, illocutinary act and perlocutionary act that utilized by Karni Ilyas in his utterances when discussion with all the guests in Indonesia Lawyers Club (ILC) “KPK vs Novanto: Berpacu dengan Waktu”. The dominant types of speech act was illocutionary act and the dominant classification was directive. 2) There were two ways in performing speech act used by Karni, namely direct and indirect speech. Direct speech was more dominant than indirect speech. 3) There were four reasons why Karni using speech act, namely to actuate, to entertain, to stimulate, and to inform. Abstract

The objective of this study is to explain the reason of using euphemism in religious language especially in article on Konsultasi Syariah. The research methodology used in the research is qualitative research design. The data were analyzed by using interactive model of qualitative data management and analysis namely data collection, data condensation, data display and verification and conclusion. The findings of this study revealed that the reasons of writer used euphemism especially in religious language tot only to make fear but also avoid taboo words, to show respect and to avoid uncomfortable feelings. The conclusion is euphemism that used on Konsutasi Syariah are in Arabic language and the most dominant used for taboo words  Keywords: Euphemism, Religious Language, Article, Online

Abstract

This research focused on language shift in Tamil Ethnics in Lubuk Pakam. It is aimed at finding out the process of language shift and the reason of the language is shift. The data were taken from the Tamil families living in Lubuk Pakam. This study was based on qualitative research. The subjects of the study were 72 Tamil people in Lubuk Pakam. The subjects were divided into two groups, namely intra marriage and inter marriage of Tamil people in Lubuk Pakam. Questionnaires and interviews were used to gain the data. The data were analyzed by using data collection, data reduction, data display and data verification. The findings show that there are five domains, which influence the process of language shift into Bahasa Indonesia of second and third generation in intra marriages and intermarriages of Tamil ethnics, namely family, friends, education, religion and employment. The status of Bahasa Indonesia as the official language and social success are the reasons for first generation of intra marriages and inter marriages Tamil ethnics shift into Indonesian language mean while in third generation the status of Bahasa Indonesia, social success and language use since child as the reason of Tamil ethnics shift into Bahasa Indonesia.Keywords: Language Shift, Domains, Tamil, Ethnics

Abstract

Proverb is one of many ways for people in communication. Linguistics and people cognition play vital role for people in constructing proverbs and it also depends on their natural background knowledge. Figurative meaning as a component which found in proverbs gives unexpected orientation toward subject matter. This research deals with the figurative meanings of Peribahasa Text Book. This study revealed the investigation of the types of figurative meanings in Peribahasa text book. This research is conducted by the qualitative research. The data are analyzed by applying interactive models of Miles, Huberman and Saldana. Based on the analysis data then there are another six figurative meanings beyond personification, simile, metaphor, metonymy, and synecdoche , they are Irony 26 proverbs (7.1%), Hyperbole 23 proverbs (6.3%), Symbol 15 proverbs (4.1%), Understatement 6 proverbs (1.6%), Paradox 7 proverbs (2%), and Allegory 1 proverb (0.3%) and the rest refers to the construction identity, such as reiteration formula, cultural figurative expression and proverbial reality. This implied that proverbs were created by genius imagination, by chosing the words, then combining them and producing the idea formulation in the form of scenic series of words and full of aesthetics.Keywords: Proverbs, Figurative Meanings, Construction Identity

Abstract

Semiotic is the study of sign or the science that study about the sign in human beings. The objectives of this study were to investigate the semiotic meanings applied in cigarette advertisement, to analyze how the meanings were coded verbally and non-verbally, and to reason why it is used in the ways they are. The data for the study were clauses, phrases, and sentences drawn from selected billboard advertisement of cigarette in Medan. The verbal data analyzed with linguistic devises and textual analysis of Leech Theory and visual grammar of Kress and Van Leeuwen as theoretical framework. The result were two broad categorize of meaning. They were related to verbal and non-verbal aspects. The relation between the verbal and non-verbal expression were elaborate, manipulate, and exageratte,  the advertisers make the major use of declarative sentence that are found on 11 texts. Then, by using 8 imperative and 8 adjective. Next, by using 6 disjunctive and 6 noun/pronoun. In image/picture use of visual features such as calor saturation, symbolic structure representation, offering gaze, the use of large size, logo, slogan. Various social context were discoverd in the advertisement such as promoting the standar of quality, quantity, creative, enjoying the life. The standard idea about how particular mode like young and old man should be differentiated based on the conventional values in society when it comes to what types of product that is competible to them. Cigarette advertisement also hide threats with persuasive expression and colorful meaning for commercial purposes.Keywords: Semiotics, Sign, Critical Discourse Analysis, Cigarette Advertisement.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objectives of this study were the descriptive lexicogrammar and text structure written by   Junior High School students. This study was conducted by descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data was the descriptive text written by the students where they describe the pictures of cats and sunflower. The technique of data collection was observation. The technique of data analysis was Interactive Model by Miles and Huberman (2014).The findings show that the students used all the descriptive lexicogrammar, they are Tense, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs and Reference. The finding also show that all the students written descriptive text by applying all descriptive text structure components, they are Classification, Appearance, Behaviour, Attribute, and Location. The students of grade 7, 8, and 9 of Junior High School used five components of lexicogrammar on descriptive text, namely, Tense, Verb, Adjectives, Adverbs, and Reference, but,  the use of tense has not been used properly up to grade 9 because there is found that there are incorrect subject verb-agreement and incorrect choosing and using lexicogrammar. In term of text sructure, the students used five components of text structure, they are, Classification, Appearance, Behaviour, Attribute, and Location, but, the use of Classification have not yet been used correctly since there is still mistake related to place the classification on the text.Keywords: Lexicogrammar, Text Structure, Descriptive Text

Abstract

This study is concerned with the use of metaphors in onang onang of Bobby and Kahiyang tortor dance. The objectives of this study were to describe the types of lexical metaphors and to find the reasons of the use of lexical metaphors in onang onang of Bobby and Kahiyang tortor dance. This study was conducted by qualitative content anaylisis method. The data in this study is the lyric of onang onang in Bobby and Kahiyang tortor dance. Meanwhile, the data source is the video of onang onang of Bobby and Kahiyang tortor dance. The findings of this study showed that the types of lexical metaphor used in onang onang of Bobby and Kahiyang tortor dance were five concepts of lexical metaphors, namely noun noun, noun verb, noun adjective, circumstance preposition noun, and verb preposition noun. The reason of using metaphor in onang onang of Bobby and Kahiyang wedding ceremony were first, to embellish the language in the lyric of onang onang itself and second, in order to the lyrics can easily arousing the feelings or emotions of the audience who heard it when the onang onang is sung. Keywords: Lexical Metaphor; Onang Onang; Tortor Dance
