Abstract

This study focus on investigating utterances used by male and female teachers in teaching learning process based on inquiry model. It is a qualitative research design. The subjects were six teachers in SMP AL-Wasliyah 29 Medan. There are three male teachers and three female teachers. The data of this research is collected by recording, transcribing and analysing. Recording was applied to record utterances of male and female teachers in teaching learning process based inquiry model. Transcribing was applied to transcribe the utterances of male and female in teaching learning process based on inquiry model. And analysing was to analyse the utterances of male and female in teaching learning process based on inquiry model. The study proposed by Tanen’s theory. The problem of the study are how the categories of male and female teachers’ utterances realized and why realized in the ways they are. The data were analysed by using Miles and Huberman. The result of this study revealed that: Male and female teachers were different in delivering their utterances. It could be seen from the categories showed on their utterances. Male teachers showed the categories of male utterances, such as support, intimacy, understanding, feeling, and proposal in their utterances to their students. Abstract

The objective of this study is to explain the reason of utilizing subtitling strategies in The Meg movie texts. The research methodology used in the research is qualitative research design. The data were analyzed by using interactive model of qualitative data management and analysis namely data collection, data condensation, data display and verification and conclusion. The findings of this study revealed that the reasons of translator used subtitling strategies in The Meg Movie Texts consisted of historical circumstances, traditions and the strategy to which is accustomed for both the source and the target viewer. The conclusion that the strategy to which is accustomed for both the source and the target viewer as the focused on translator reason used subtitling strategies in The Meg movie texts.Keywords: Movie, Subtitles, Subtitling Strategies, Translation, Texts

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research, entitled Translation of Cultural Terms in Mirah of Banda Novel, deals with the analysis  analysis of the translation of cultural terms in the novel. The main objectives of the study were to answer the research problems under study; which is to identify categories of cultural terms  which found in the novel,Mirah of Banda . The data were collected from  Mirah dari Banda, as the SL; and Mirah of Banda, as the TL, by applying documentation method of close-reading and note-taking technique. Then, the data was classified into some groups according to their categories  and displayed in table. The data was descriptively analyzed based on theories from Newmark to find out the answer of the research problems. The result of the data analysis shows that there were six categories of cultural words in Mirah of Banda Novel namely (1) ecology (2) material culture, (3) social culture, (4) custom, concept,( 5) gestures and habits and (6) Indonesian metaphor and Indonesian metaphor was the new categories found besides the prior categories which is proposed by Newmark.   In detail, it is dominated of ecology in 33.75% (27 data), material culture 25.00%  (20 data), social culture 23.75% (19 data), custom 6, 25% (5 data), concept 6. 25% (5 data),gestures and habits 1. 25 % (1 datum), and Indonesian Metaphor 3.75% (3 data) and The cultural words in Mirah of Banda Novel were translated by applying  ten  strategies, namely: transference (12%), cultural equivalent (2,5%), functional equivalent (10%), descriptive equivalent (2,5%), synonymy (20%), through translation (22,5%), modulation (6, 25%),compensation (5%), couplet (1, 25%), as a new strategy, trope change (3,75%)Keywords: Translation, Cultural Terms, Mirah of Banda Novel,Concept

Abstract

The objective of this study is to explain the reason of utilizing modality in Teaching Learning Process. The research methodology used in the research is qualitative research design. The data were analyzed by applying the theory of Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). The findings of this study revealed that the reasons of the teacher applied  the modality to give the instruction during teaching learning process and to show the power of the teacher in managing the class and to encourage the students to give feedbacks or responses to the teacher. Abstract

ABSTRACTLanguage forms a dialogue that becomes a very important matter in communicating. Dialogue is related with speech function. Halliday (1994) suggests that dialogue is a process of exchange involving two variables; those are: (1) a commodity to be exchanged; either information or good and service and (2) roles associated with exchange relations; either giving or demanding. Halliday (1994) states that there are four basic types of speech functions; those are: offer, statement, command, and question. This study tries to analyze the speech function of used by Anies Baswedan in his speech when he was ceremonially approved the governor of Jakarta in the Period of 2017-2022. Based on the data analysis, it was got that there are 75 independent clauses of which speech functions are statement, and there are 7 independent clauses of which speech functions are command. The speech functions of statement are in marked and unmarked mood, while the command ones are in unmarked mood. The types of speech function found in the speech are correlated with the function found in the speech are correlated with the function and the goal of the speech. Keywords: Speech Function, Speech, Governor, Inaugural Ceremony.

Abstract

This study was concerned with the use of speech acts in ILC (Indonesia Lawyers Club) Talk show program. The objective of this study was to describe the types of speech acts used by the host and the guests of ILC. Qualitative content analysis method was applied in this study. The sources of data were the host and the guests in ILC. The data of the study were the sentences and the phrases gathered from the conversation in the episodes of ILC. The finding of this study showed that four types of speech acts, namely rex`x` presentative, directive, commissive, and expressive were used by the host and the guests of ILC, while declarative speech act was not found at all in the episodes of that talk show program. The dominant type of speech act used by the host was directive, while the guests dominantly used representative speech act. Keywords: Speech Acts, Indonesia Lawyers Club, Talk Show Program. Abstract

The aim of this study was to know the cognitive process manner of different gender in writing argumentative text. The population of this study was grade XII of Free Methodist Senior High School Medan in 2019/2020 academic years and the sample was three males and three females. The sample was taken by snowball technique. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research design of which data were the transcript of think aloud protocol and retrospective interview. In analyzing the data, this research used model of Miles and Huberman, namely data collection, data reduction, data display, and data verification. Based on the data analysis was found that male and female had difference manners in writing argumentative text. The male students generated the ideas by brainstorming, and then they outlined the thinking ideas orderly as a guide in writing. In the translating process, they tended to transform the ideas based on the generic structure of argumentative text referred to the outlines which were made before. In the process of writing they did reading and editing words and sentences have been arranged well. In the end of their writing, they tended to read their writing result to make sure. While the female students had different way with male students where in the planning process, they generated the ideas by brainstorming then, they developed the points by outlining the ideas and the ideas were improved the quality by reading and revising the ideas. In the translating process, they tended to develop their writing by structuring it based on the argumentative generic structure without reading and editing because they tended to write it fluently. In reviewing, they did reading the text to check all words and sentences. Abstract

The paper describes the perspective of “Sambah Manyambah” Tradition”(literally ‘to greet a bride-groom up’) tradition and the attempts to analyze the euphemism such tradition which is mainly found in Minangnese regency and becomes an oral tradition that requires indigenous actors who have indigenous knowledge and expertise in speaking and in using indigenous language. The actors are considered customary actors (or pelakuadat) who, in this case, deliver custom speech or tribute (pasambahan or pidatoadat) which is aimed at declaring the intention and the purposes of the tradition. The research method is qualitative descriptive and attempted to obtain the necessary information from informants with observation techniques. The results show that since the actors’ existence is lack of appreciation today, the tradition undergoes significant changes; therefore, a model of this research will take the euphemism to the tradition has been created and is hopefully accepted by local communities. In here the researcher will get the types of euphemism used in ‘Sambah Manyambah’ Tradition for the tradition of Minangnese wedding ceremony. It is suggested that Pariaman should be getting the point of ‘Sambah Manyambah’ Tradition itself.Keywords: Euphemism, Sambah Manyambah, Wedding Ceremony

Abstract

This study deals with the language  communication strategies in conversation used by extrovert and introvert students at Politeknik LP3i Medan. It uses qualitative research design with a single case study to gain an understanding on this study. It is conducted descriptively. This study aims to find out the types of communication strategies in conversation used by introvert students of Politeknik LP3i Medan. The subjects were 10 persons of introvert and of Politeknik LP3I Medan. The use of instruments in this study were observation ,interview and documentation. The observation were the types of communication strategies in conversation used by extrovert and  introvert students of Politeknik LP3i Medan. The interview was used to in depth the data. The theories of Celce-Murcia was used in this study. The data were analyzed by Spradley (1979) analysis. The result of the study there were three reason of communication strategy were used by students of Politeknik LP3I Medan. Abstract

The objectives of this study was to describe the writers’ ways of persuading readers in argumentative writing. This study followed the theory of Ramage et.al. (2016) about the ways of persuading readers which comprises of text structure, reasoning, and persuasive appeal. This study used descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were gathered by using elicitation technique, asking the 8th semester of undergraduate students to write argumentative text under predetermined topic Social Media Should be Banned with three intended readers, they were: Junior High School, Senior High School, and Undergraduate students.This study revealed that the subjects manipulated the text structure by presenting three-layered text structure of argumentative writing, and presenting the pseudo-evidence and organizing cause and effect relationship in terms of the reasoning aspect.Keywords: Cognitive Consideration, Argumentative, Writing, Persuasive
