JLLLT is a double-blind peer-reviewed, published biannual on January-June, July- December. It is dedicated to promoting scholarly exchange among teachers, practitioners, and researchers in the field of languages. Although articles are written in English, the journal welcomes studies dealing with other than English as well. The scope of JLLLT includes Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. Abstract

This research is about lexical cohesion (repetition, synonym, antonym, hyponym, collocation). This study's objectives were: (1) to find the type of LC in the reportage, and opinion column of Jakarta Post News and (2) find the dominant type of LC in the reportage and opinion column of Jakarta Post News. Researchers used library research, while the data sources were the news reports and opinion texts of the Jakarta Post News, which consisted of 30 opinion news and 30 reportage news in edition October. Data analysis used Miles and Huberman's model (reduction, display and verification). The results found synonym 94, repetition 87, antonym 67, hyponym 40, collocation 30. The total LC in the Jakarta Post News is 318. The dominant LC in the Jakarta Post is synonymous with a total of 94 words.

Abstract

This study investigated increasing students' ability to write procedure text through learning model pictures and pictures in ninth grade at SMPN 4 Takengon. The study used the quantitative method with experimental design. To collect the data, the writer uses the test (pre-test and post-test). The population in this research is all students of the ninth grade in SMPN 4 Takengon, which consists of 196 students. The writer uses purposive sampling to take the sample in this research. A first group is an experimental group, which amounts to 37 students, and the second group is the control group which amounts to 37 students.  The writer uses the t-test formula to analyze data in this research. The result of tscore is 5,71. Compared with the ttable, the tscore is higher, i.e., 5,71, than ttable is 1,99. It can be concluded that learning model pictures and pictures can increase students' ability in writing procedure text. The writer suggests that students try to write in English as habitual because it can help add more vocabulary and make the students have good writing.

Abstract

Educational media is one of the aspects that determine the success of learning. Language learning uses specific learning media because it requires a unique approach. The purpose of this study was to determine the educational media used in language learning and their effectiveness. The research method used is a literature review; the article's source comes from the Scopus database. The number of articles used as data sources is 16 articles. The study results found that the learning media used in language learning were: social media, Facebook, website, mobile learning, and Android. The entire educational media utilizes technology. Only one educational medium was found that did not utilize technology, namely the use of musical instruments. The results showed that the educational media used was effective. The use of educational technology in learning provides opportunities for further development in its use strategy.

Abstract

Politeness is usually related to speech acts done by the speaker, and this can be seen in everyday life when people are having a conversation. The conversation that we often see in video debate is a conversation that has the value of politeness. This research analyzes politeness introduced by Brown and Levinson in Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton's presidential debate 2016. This research used a qualitative approach with library research. The sources of data were primary and secondary data. The data were in source primary the form of utterances that contain politeness strategies. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton's presidential debate 2016 script was the data source. Secondary data in this research is the politeness aspect related to the problem in this research. The collecting data techniques are reduction, display, verification, or drawing conclusion. The result of the analysis is bald on record (16), positive politeness (26), negative politeness (34), and off-record (10).  So the total politeness that occurred in Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton's presidential debate in 2016 is 86. The dominant utterance varieties politeness in presidential debate 2016 is 34 negative politeness.

Abstract

The research is the teaching narrative text using team assisted individualization (TAI) method to increase students' writing ability at second years SMPN 31  Takengon. The researcher used quantitative research with experimental design. The second year of SMPN 31 Takengon (VIII1 and VIII2)  as the sample. Technique data analysis in this investigation uses statistics with the score t-test and formulate uses to compare the actual difference between control and experimental samples. The result of the using the team-assisted individualization (TAI) method is increase the students' writing in narrative text. It can be seen from the result of test tobs >  ttable value tobs 2.88 and ttable 1,60 or tobs ? ttable. The team-assisted individualization (TAI) method also helps the students increase imagination and make the students easy to write in narrative text.

Abstract

This research is qualitative applying content analysis. The objectives of this research are to describe the types of register, and to describe the meanings of register based on the Reader’s Digest magazine’s food columns. The source of the data in this research was the food columns in Reader’s Digest magazines. Technique of data collection was carried out by reading and taking note. The main instrument of this research was the researcher herself while the secondary instruments were data sheets. The trustworthiness of the data analysis was achieved with the employment triangulation technique. The research findings show 138 register items. The results reveal that the forms of register found in this research are the oratorical frozen register (12.3%), the deliberative/formal register (60.2%), the consultative register (11.6%), the casual register (12.3%), and the intimate register (3.6%). Of the five types of register, the deliberative/formal register ranks first. This means that the writer honors the reader beside the intimacy between them.

Abstract

Understanding culture and language is a communication instrument that is often used in communicating with other people, especially when we speak a foreign language with foreigners. Good communication will be seen when we talk with good words. This study is to know the understanding of 6th and 2nd-semester students regarding cross culture and language. The research used a qualitative descriptive method with an observation and interview approach for 6th and 2nd-semester English Language Study Program students at IAIN Takengon. The results that can be concluded show that students' understanding of cross-cultural language is in a position of knowing enough. Students in semesters 2 and 6 believe that communication is important, culture is important, and language is also essential to learn and understand. Because learning culture, and a foreign language makes it easier to communicate with foreigners, not only easy but allows us to not have any complications with people because of the misunderstanding of other people's cultures.

Abstract

Culture is the identity of a country, and as a differentiator between one country and another, the purpose of studying cross-cultural understanding is to understand the differences between cultures in other countries so that there will be no misunderstanding of the culture of one country and another. Therefore, it is essential for students, especially English students. This research is descriptive quantitative research with interviews and observations. The results show that the understanding of the 6th-semester students of the English study program about cross-cultural and language is excellent. In observations and interviews, students understand the cultural rules inherent in other countries, the concept of discipline and respecting time in other countries, and how to respect one's privacy. And students understand the relationship between language and culture.

Abstract

Princess Pukes is the small kingdom's beloved girl and the only child. Because she denied his mother, who said she should not look back when escorted to the groom's house before passing through the Pukes area. But because she couldn't stand her parents' choice, the princess accidentally looked back, suddenly lightning struck, and the rain was weighty. So Putri Pukes took shelter in the cave. Inside the cave, Putri Pukes stood in a corner because of her cold body temperature. Slowly the princess's body hardened and turned into stone. The prince who entered first heard the news that the princess had turned to stone. Enthusiastically, he prayed to be turned into stone. Ultimately, the love story between Princess Pukes and the prince ends tragically. This study aims to (1) describe the moral values ??in the Putri Pukes folklore, (2) describe the cultural values ??in the Putri Pukes folklore, and the source of the data taken is the Putri Pukes folklore. The results of this study aim to be an example for the younger generation and to have an extensive and positive influence, especially on those who have read this story, so as not to imitate the wrong attitude of the Pukes daughter, who violates the message of her parents. However, to reduce incidents like this, always teach other younger generations to obey and listen to their parents' messages to get good right from Allah SWT.

Abstract

This story about Atu Belah is one of the most famous stories for Gayo children. Once upon a time, in Penarun Village, Gayo Highlands, Central Aceh, there lived a low-income family. In his free time, his father always hunted deer in the forest. In addition, he also caught many grasshoppers in the fields to eat if he did not manage to find a game. He collected the grasshoppers little by little in the barn. However, he had caused the death of his wife. This study aims to (1) describe the moral values ??in the Atu Belah story and (2) describe the cultural values ??in the Atu Belah story. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The data source in this study is the story of Atu Split, published on the website of the Central Aceh District Government. The object of this research is the moral and cultural values ??of the Atu Split story. The data collection technique was done by reading and taking notes. The results of this study indicate that (1) the moral values ??contained in the stone split story are (a) the value of hard work, (b) the value of independence, (c) the value of curiosity, and (d) the value of responsibility; (2) the cultural values ??contained in the stone split story are philosophical values, (b) the value of patience, and (c) true values.
