Abstract

This research was conducted to describe the intercultural pragmatic perspective in the grade 8 Indonesian Junior High School EFL textbook entitled “When English Rings a Bell”. Researchers hope that the result of this study can increase teachers’ awareness’ of interculturality in Indonesia, so that they are able to provide language material that can be linked to the learning process. In this study, researcher used content analysis. The text can be in visual form which is used as a communication tool such as documents, film, picture, and book. In this study, researcher used a book entitled “When Rings a Bell” 8th grade Junior high school. In general, this book has been previously used by Junior high school students in Indonesia which was designed by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia in 2014 but revised again in 2018. Researcher used Moran’s (2001) theory as a data analysis on cultural aspect in English textbook.Keywords:     intercultural perspective, EFL textbook, junior high school

Abstract

This study aimed at describing the teaching of English to the kindergarten students in Manado City which contributed to the improvement of English Teaching and Learning quality for young learners. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design with 14 teachers who taught English in 5 kindergartens as participants. The data was collected through interview to the participants and documentation of English learning materials and media. Then, the data was analyzed by applying three techniques; data reduction, data display, and data verification. The results revealed that the teachers who taught English designed the learning materials such as the alphabet, numbers, colors, animals, and days. In terms of teaching and learning media, seven teachers (50%) used the textbooks provided by the school. Two teachers (14%) used flashcards to help them convey the teaching material. Three teachers (22%) used pictures and two teachers (14%) used songs. The researchers found that 36% of the teachers used story telling method, 22% used singing, 21% made small groups, 14% conducted repetition, and only 7% applied the Role Play method. Moreover, findings on the challenges faced by the teachers in teaching English showed that the students’ difficulty in pronouncing English words, inadequate time to teach English, and the teacher’s non-English academic background became the factors influencing the teaching and learning process in Manado City Kindergartens.Keywords:          Teaching English, Young Learners, Media, Method, Challenges

Abstract

In this life, elements of literature can be found in almost every part of human being. Even in some activities with the goal to entertain, such as movies, there are values that are meant to deliver lessons, for example educational values. This research tries to unfold the educational values of the main character, Latte, in the film “Latte and Magic Waterstone” by Regina Walker. This underrated movie on Netflix is filled with many life lesson and values that people needed to be reminded of in today’s fast life. The purpose of the research is to observe the types of educational values existed in the film, especially focused on Latte as the main character. The method used is qualitative study by observing the educational values in the film. The results of this research showed that there are 4 types of educational values dealing with Value of Being consist of 4 data: Honesty, Brave, Confidence, Patience, and there are 3 points in types of educational values dealing with Value of Giving consist of 3 data: Love and Affection, Unselfish, Responsibility. Keywords:         Educational Values, Latte, Main Character, Film

Abstract

This research studies about the motivation of the main character who chooses to leave his family for free and peaceful life. The objectives of this research is unraveling and exploring McCandless motivation in the movie “into the wild” directed by Sean Penn. The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach with the type of content analysis study. In this cas, psychological analysis is employed. The data are collected through observing the script of the film and take notes. The result of this research shows that there are intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation and also there are five types broader motivation that classified into physiological needs, safety needs, love belongingness needs, esteem needs and self-actualization.  Keywords: Film, Main Character, Motivation, Psychology

Abstract

This study aimed to describe students' perceptions in learning grammar using social media during the Covid-19 pandemic. This research used qualitative method with descriptive analysis. The subjects of this study were 20 students who had been taught grammar through social media due to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak in the third semester of the English Education Department of the Sultan Amai State Islamic Institute of Gorontalo in the academic year 2020/2021 which were taken with a purpose. Data collection that used was questionnaires and interviews. The data obtained were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions / data verification. The results of this study indicated that Students perception show that the most preferred social media for learning grammar by using social media was YouTube, Zoom, and WhatsApp and based on the result of research it showed that learning grammar by using social media are quite diverse and elaborate it. was very helpful, increasing the value, quite flexible but less motivated, less facilitated, not effective, has more disadvantages than advantages and less of interested. Based on students’ perception, 15 out of 20 students feel that they are not facilitated by the network to access the internet to learn grammar online because many students learn in their respective areas which are still difficult to signal to access the internet. Abstract

Students' Anxiety in Reading Aloud at MTs Negeri 3 Bolaang Mongondow Timur was a study that aimed to find out what factors influence students anxiety in reading aloud. This study employed descriptive qualitative method with a qualitative approach. The participants were 15 students in VIII-1 class of MTs Negeri 3 Bolaang Mongondow Timur-Sulawesi Utara. Furthermore, the data was analysed and portrayed into charts, then discussed with existed theories. The result of the research revealed some factors that make students feel anxious in reading aloud. First, personal factors caused students felt anxious such as worry about reading effects and afraid of making an error. Second, the text features also influenced the anxiety in reading aloud such as unfamiliar culture, unfamiliar topic, and unknown vocabulary. By understanding the result, it suggested to the teacher to implement several ways to minimize the students’ anxiety such as determining the times of reading aloud, encouraging the students to learn while reading and providing feedback in illustrating language learnt, using text talk, print referencing, and previewing.  As a result, this study contributes to the improvement of techniques that the teacher used in conducting reading aloud activity to reduce the students’ anxiety.Keywords:     Anxiety, Reading Aloud
