The purpose of this descriptive qualitative research is to investigate the used of fillers in speaking fluency, especially for novice teachers in Asia. This research was conducted at one of the state universities in Indonesia. As a result, the level of fluency which was followed by 16 novice teachers in Asia was classified as good with a presentation of 48.6%. In addition, the researcher also found that the use of filers showed the number 1,215 consisting of 12 fillers words. However, this percentage of numbers shows that the novice teachers are strongly advised to reduce the use of these fillers.

Abstract

Videoconferencing tools with their webcam features are among the platforms that support the implementation of an online learning system amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Thus, students' attitudes toward webcam use can carry out essential meanings on the teaching-learning process in distance learning. Through an explanatory case study, the study aimed to determine students' preferences toward webcam use; and the reasons behind their behaviour. The results indicated that Indonesian EFL students at an average level agreed to keep their webcams on during virtual classrooms. To this point, there are situations where they turn their webcams on and off during courses in a week. A number of reasons such as facing anxiety issues, having an internet connection problem, concerning their privacy; become the primary reasons why they turned the camera off. Findings also highlighted that even students had some difficulties using it, they tried to keep their cameras on during several courses, even it is not mandatory, in order to show respect and closeness to their lecturers and be more attentive in joining the online classes. Thus the study offers implications for educators to encourage—not as mandatory—their students to turn their webcam on during online classes. Emphasize that even if they are in an online learning classroom keeping their webcams on will demonstrates their socio-affective skills, namely showing respect, attentiveness, and closeness to their lecturers.

Abstract

The Qur'an as the holy book of Muslims, of course, has many interpretations of verses, including the content of verses discussing education. One of the letters and verses of the Qur'an that discusses education is Surah al-'Alaq verses 1-5, which refers to science, namely by ordering reading as the key to knowledge. The command to 'read' in that verse is called twice an order to the Messenger of Allah, and then an order to all his people. Reading is one of the keys to science, both etymologically in the form of reading literature written in books, as well as terminologically, namely reading in a broader sense, meaning reading the universe (verse al-kauniyah). Seeking knowledge is a commandment for every Muslim, male and female, in addition to the basic knowledge, namely syar'i science, including the pursuit of science and technology, this is clearly seen in the verse that was first revealed with the word iqra' , whose meaning includes all knowledge, both the knowledge of the world and the science of the hereafter. However, the generality of the iqra' command is muqayyad (interrelated), not absolute, so that seeking knowledge that is justified by the Shari'ah is on the condition of 'bismi Rabbik' (in a way that is justified by the Lord). This research is to explore the values contained in surah al-'Alaq verses 1 to 5, which focuses on the science of education. After deciphering the meaning of words in the verses of Surah all-'Alaq verses 1 to 5, it was found that at least 3 (three) educational values were found, namely: skill values, divine values and intellectual values (reason).
