Abstract

Conversational implicatures is an important thing that need to be interpreted in a conversation to avoid misunderstanding between the speaker and hearer so that the goal of communication can be reached. This research focuses on analysing the types of flouting maxims used by the characters in science fiction movie entitled Ready Player One since it is important to make the conversation become more effective. The theory of cooperative principle proposed by Grice used to analyze the types of flouting maxims. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method to describes the data in order to provide deep understanding about the types of flouting maxims used by the characters in the movie. The result of the research shows that there are 25 data of flouting maxim in Ready Player One movie. Flouting the maxim of quantity is the highest frequency of flouting maxim in this movie with 8 number of occurrence or 32% occurrence. Furthermore, flouting the maxim of relation and manner has the same frequency with 7 data or 28% occurrence. Flouting the maxim of quality is the lowest frequency of flouting maxim with 3 data or 12% occurrence.

Abstract

Podcasting is being introduced into academic fields as an e-learning tool. The existance of podcasting contributes to help teaching learning activities running well. However, there were difficulties for the students to attain the meaning in listening subject. It was because that listening comprehension is becoming complex process to comprehend spoken language on English Foreign Language learner. This study aimed to investigate the use of audio podcast in achieving listening skill in teaching activities. This study  conducted  as library research using systematic reviews method to find the effectiveness of audio podcast  in teaching listening on all level of students. According to literature reviews, this study revealed the use of audio podcast in teaching listening is effective for the students both in classroom and  out door class

Abstract

This thesis is entitled An Analysis Of Translation Shift Of Noun Phrase In The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn Novel by Mark Twain’s. it has two objectives, namely (1) To Identify the types of noun phrase in terms of its constituent parts are used in The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn Novel and (2) To Identify the types of translation shifts of noun phrase in The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn Novel. Theory proposed by Catford (1965) about types of Translation Shift and it was combined with theory of Types of Noun Phrase by Quirk, Greenbaum, (1985: 245). The collected data were analyzed by reading the novel and classify the data base on the theory adopted. Based on final result show that the researcher finds 434 data of Noun Phrase found in the novel were Determinative + Head 266 data, Head + Pre-modification 99 data, and Head + Post-modification 69 data. The Types of Translation shift researcher finds 434 data that found in the novel were Translation Shift divided into two categories the first is Level shift its found 52 data and Category Shift is 382 data that divided into four categories the first is Unit Shift 35 data, Structure Shift 279 data, Class Shift 56 data and the last is Intra-system Shift 12 data.

Abstract

Language is the primary media to communicate, and it can build the relationship with each other which has function to carry the meaning. This study concerns to analyze hyperbole found in Shawn Mendes song lyrics that were released in 2016. There are two problems that are formulated in this study, they are: (1) what are hyperbole found in Shawn Mendes song lyrics; (2) what are the meaning of hyperbole found in Shawn Mendes song lyrics, there are two theories used in this research the first theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963:367) that is used to identify hyperbole and the second theory is the theory of meaning which supported by Leech (1981) to analyze the meaning. The method used in collecting the data was done by formal and informal method. The writer collected the data by listening the songs, reading the scripts, underling, and classifying the lyrics which are contain one type of figurative language that is hyperbole. The data analyzed descriptively by using qualitative method. The total of hyperbole found in eight tittle of Shawn Mendes lyrics are 10 terms, the songs that most appear used of hyperbole is “lights on” which has three terms.

Abstract

Abstract This study explores the teaching of listening in pesantren-based university during COVID-19 pandemic. There are 18 male students and 6 female students taking part in the study. They are taking Listening for Daily Conversation course for 7 meetings. The data is collected using questionnaire in the form of Google Form. There were two aspects asked to the respondents; (1)about the materials and (2)about the teaching and learning activity. The study found that; (1)the level of difficulty used by the lecturer teaching Listening for Daily Conversation class needs to be adjusted to students’ current level of competence, (2)lecturer teaching the course at the male campus gave less questions in the assignment compared to lecturer teaching in the female campus who give more questions to the students, (3)male students’ answers are more homogeneous compared to female students’ answers, (4) male students tend to show more happiness and gratefulness compared to female students showed more sadness, (4)almost all of the male students think that them could not meet the lecturers do not affect them. Meanwhile, the female students are more affected, (5)students from both campuses  needed assistance from the Internet, books, dictionary, and their friends, (6)lecturers from both campuses provided assistance to the students. Being an effective English lecturer requires being able to help and assist students in their learning process, (7) can be interpreted that students’ suggestions on what needs to be improved are divided into the teaching and learning activity for male students and students themselves for female students.  It is hoped that this study will contribute to the body of knowledge in terms of the teaching of listening during COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Speaking skill is a skill that must be possessed by everyone, especially for a teacher. However, for a novice teacher who is teaching, speaking fluently in front of the class for the first time it is certainly not easy. Then, not infrequently in conveying material, they often use fillers. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative research is to investigate the used of fillers in speaking fluency, especially for novice teachers in Asia. Class observation is chosen in this study to find out the concrete data. Researchers use Brown and Abeywickrama's (2010) theory as to classification of the level of fluency in speaking. This research was conducted at one of the state universities in Indonesia. As a result, the level of fluency which was followed by 16 novice teachers in Asia was classified as good with a presentation of 48.6%. In addition, the researcher also found that the use of filers showed the number 1,215 consisting of 12 fillers words. However, this percentage of numbers shows that the novice teachers are strongly advised to reduce the use of these fillers.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Time management is essential, and it may affect an individual's overall performance and achievements. Research has shown that all the time management behaviors are positively related to academic achievement. This study aims to measure the level of time management possessed by PMPBI UNJ the year of 2019 students and find out the correlation between the level of time management and the success of achieving a Summa Cum Laude honorary degree. The primary data collection for this study is through an online questionnaire survey. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the presentations were made in tables and figures to some extent. The result shows that 55% of the participants possess a moderate level time management score, while 45% of the participants possess high-level time management scores. No participants have a low-level time management score. Furthermore, the result also reveals that the level of time management (High or Moderate Level) correlates with the success of achieving a Summa Cum Laude honorary degree for students of the PMPBI UNJ class of 2019. Lastly, the results also show that Short-Range planning, and Time Attitudes, each variable correlates with the success of achieving a Summa Cum Laude honorary degree. However, the results show that Long-Range planning does not correlate with the success of achieving a Summa Cum Laude honorary degree. Keywords: time management level, short-range, time attitude, long-range, students’ achievement, Summa Cum Laude.

Abstract

Politic is a struggle for power to gain attention and persuade the audience. This study attempts to describe the political discourse on Joe Biden’s Speech. The data were taken from Joe Biden’s acceptance speech at the 2020 Democratic National Convention. The analysis of the data was conducted by a descriptive qualitative method. The writers tried to find the structure of political discourse in Joe Biden’s speech. The result of this study shows there are 8 topics found in Joe Biden’s speech, namely (1) Crises, (2) the country that everyone wishes to live, (3) missions of Joe Biden, (4) Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’s life story and family, (5) the campaign and election’s value, (6) Joe Biden’s reason for running as president, (7) Joe Biden’s opinion of his opponent, and (8) Joe Biden’s perspective about America. Each topic consists of some elements of political discourse structures: local semantic, lexicon, syntax, rhetoric, expression structure, and speech act and interaction. Therefore by considering the use of political discourse structure, the speaker able to persuade the audience.

Abstract

Development of language areas, especially in terms of addresses, has not been widely studied by sociolinguistic researchers. This gap is strengthening this research to be integrated with translation aspect. Its application of qualitative research methods with a descriptive approach is carried out with data sources and data taken from Okky Madasari’s novel, which exposes a lot of the social live in various ways. Analyzed in a content analysis will produce a combination of linguistic context with the applied aspect of language translation. The patterns presented in the context of language focus on the address of the person who is the object of utterances and the application of the aspect of language translation is focused on the language technique of the summon context which has a neat effect on assessing the quality of the translation results.

Abstract

 This study was considered library research. This study was focused on analyzing a poem entitled “When I Have Fears That I May Cease to Be” written by John Keats using psychoanalysis criticism theory that was proposed by Sigmund Freud in 1952. The limitation of this study was about the author’s life including psychological aspect, experience, and author’s feeling that affected the poetry. The qualitative method was used in order to present the result of the analysis. The result of the analysis showed the three aspects, such as psychological aspect, author’s experience, and also the feelings are link together and affected the beauty of the poem. John Keats not only entertaining the reader but also educated the reader, through the theme that Keats brings to this poem, invite the reader to always being grateful and always do the best to improve our life to be better.
