Abstract

The aims of this research are to find out the teacher’s challenges in teaching English and the student‟s challenges in learning English at junior high school during pandemic dealing with learning English online. This research uses qualitative method. The data of this research were collected through questionnaire and interview. The subjects of this research were the teacher who teaches at second grade and the second-grade students at SMP PGRI BAREMBENG that was consisted 30 students which were taken by using random sampling. The result of data analysis found that (1) there are some challenges faced by the teacher in teaching English online at second grade students including, student‟s interest and enthusiasm in learning English online, difficulty in using ICT, difficulty in providing and explaining learning material, difficulty in measuring student‟s improvement and achievement and assessing student‟s work, (2) there are some challenges faced by the students at second grade including less enthusiastic (student‟s interests and motivation), difficulty in the learning process, and the lack of internet package and internet network.

Abstract

This study aims to describe students’ perceptions of the use of Google Classroom in the learning English process. The researchers applied qualitative methods to achieve the research objectives, the data collected in this research were in the form of interviews. The subjects of this study were students in the third grade of SMA NEGERI 2 BONE. The interview sample was 20 students, using voluntary sampling technique. In this study, researchers analyzed the data by understanding, compiling codes, looking for themes and drawing conclusions. Based on the results of the study, the researchers found that students' perceptions of the use of Google Classroom in learning process as a flexible, efficient, effective media and interaction between teacher and some of students continued smoothly learning process. Although, cheating is still common due to lack of control, but Google Classroom has features that can overcome this. Most of the students in this study agreed that Google Classroom were effective when used for Learning process.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to find out the students’ most frequent problems in listening English story via YouTube and the students’ ways to solve their problems. This research applied mixed method, which used both quantitative and qualitative approach. To achieve the purpose of the study the data in this research were collected through online questionnaire and online interview. The respondents of this study were 30 students of English Education 2018, State University of Makassar who participated in online questionnaire and there are 15 students who participated in online interview. The result of data analysis found that (1) there are five most frequent problems students faced when listening English story: lack of vocabulary with 3.93 mean value and percentage of 83.3%, noisy atmosphere with 3.82 mean value and percentage of 65%, lack of knowledge about the topic with 3.80 mean value and percentage of 58%, speaker speaks a bit fast with 3.65 mean value and percentage of 67%, lack of grammar with 3.63 mean value and percentage of 68.3%, (2) there are two ways in solve their problems in each factor. Those are taking a note and practice listening through audio and video, looking for a comfortable place and try to focus and concentrate, looking for the information of the topic and try to understand the topic, repeat the audio or video and use the subtitle feature, learning a lot and reading a book.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to discover whether some effects of Zootopia movies on vocabulary mastery of the junior secondary students in vocabulary teaching have an effect or not. The pre-experimental design was the method used by the researchers with one class pre-test and post-test. The secondary students were the population of MTsN Kota Parepare in the 2021/2022 academic year. The sample was taken with a cluster random sampling technique that consisted of 25 students. The instrument of this research was a vocabulary test administered as a pre-test and post-test. This research found a substantial difference in students' scores before and after treatment. As can be observed from the mean score, students' pre-test means score was (53,24), which was lower than their post-test mean score (85,96). The significant value of this research (0.000) was lower than the significant level (0.05). Therefore, the use of Zootopia Movie as a teaching media can increase students’ vocabulary mastery of the secondary students of MTsN Kota Parepare. The result of rxy is -0,461, and after being consulted to the table, rxy (- 0,461) is very weak. It means that the correlation is negative, using the Zootopia movie as a teaching media. In this case, the researchers conclude that there is a negative correlation between vocabulary test and students' responses using the Zootopia movie as a teaching media at secondary students of MTsN Kota Parepare.

Abstract

This research was quantitative approach that aimed to find out the student perception in using podcast as a medium to improve listening skill at English Education study program, Faculty of Language and Literature, State University of Makassar. The research sampel is students English Education 2017, Faculty of Language and Literature, State University of Makassar. Purposive sampling will be used in this research. The data was collected by used Questionnaire and Interview. The result of the data analysis showed that the student and teacher agreed about their easier understanding to the subject when the teacher used podcast in teaching listening. They also agreed that using podcast can help them in remembering the subject. It was proved from the result of the questionnaire and interview. The result of the questionnaire showed that 64% of student stated that the use of podcast in listening helps them in understanding vocabulary in listening to understand the content, and the result of interview showed that podcasting can be a facilitating tool in EFL teaching that helps students mostly in listening. So, it can be concluded that students’ perception on using podcast in teaching listening was positive. By using podcast, they felt more interesting in learning the subject of listening and they didn’t get bored during the lesson, so they can more enjoy understanding the content of listening.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the kind of online learning the students prefer and the reasons why the students prefer the online learning in learning English at SMA Negeri 16 Makassar. This research applied mixed methods research design. The data were collected from the questionnaire and interview. The subject of this study was the second-grade social science students. The questionnaire was conducted on 98 students and the interview was conducted on 12 students. The result of this research showed that the mean score of the students' preference in synchronous was (46,17) indicated "like" category and the mean score of the students' preference in asynchronous was (44,64) indicated "neutral" category. From the result, the researchers found that the mean score of synchronous was higher than asynchronous. The reasons why the students prefer synchronous are because there is the direct interaction between the students and teacher, being easy to understand, direct demonstration, and good emotional relationship between the students and teacher. Meanwhile, the students prefer asynchronous because there is saved task history, the materials can be repeated, providing clear materials, and facilitating assignment submission. Therefore, it can be concluded that the students prefer synchronous. Synchronous can be used to deliver the material and asynchronous can be used to provide the material or task, and students' assignment submission.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out whether or not the animation video improved students’ vocabulary. This study's population consisted of second-grade students from senior high school 4 Sidenreng Rappang in the 2021/2022 academic year. The sample was composed of 21 students and was drawn using the cluster random sampling approach. The findings of this study suggested that the utilization of animation video improved pupils' vocabularies. The value of the t-test (21,864) was larger than the value of the t-table (2,086) with the level of significance (p) = 0, 05 and the degree of freedom (df) 20. The students' pretest means score was (39,62), while their post-test mean score was (39,62). (80,38). It can be concluded that using animation video can significantly improve the vocabulary of the second-grade students of senior high school 4 Sidenreng Rappang.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to see the utilization of presentation activities in online speaking class. Pre-experimental design was adapted in this study. The respondents in this research were students in the eleventh grade at SMA Negeri 4 Sidrap academic year 2021//2022 through random sampling technique and XI IPA 1 was selected as the sample of this research. The instrument of this research was speaking test which was delivered as pre-test and post-test. The result shown that the utilization of presentation activities was significant to improve students’ speaking performance. It was proved that the students’ mean score of pre-tests was 5.72 and the students’ mean score of post-tests was 7.31 with percentage 28% of improvement. It could be concluded that the utilization of presentation activities in online speaking class can improve students speaking performance.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was To Find Out whether or not the Image Streaming Strategy affects the student’s narrative English text. This study used Pre-Experimental in quantitative methods and image streaming was used as a research strategy. The population in this study were students of class XI IPA SMA Negeri 1 Tinambung. in the 2021/2022 school year. Samples were taken using a cluster random sampling technique consisting of 29 students. The instrument of this research is a Writing test of a sheet essay writing short story. From the analysis of data and computations, it was found that the image streaming strategy has an effect on the skills writing narrative English text for class XI Students of SMA Negeri 1 Tinambung. The result writing skill narrative text by students before use image streaming strategy was 53.17 in the poor category and after using the image streaming strategy was 89.73 in the Good category. This means that there is the effect of Image Streaming strategy in learning to write narrative English text for XI Students SMA Negeri 1 Tinambung.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the level of student anxiety from the factors that cause anxiety and the impact of speaking anxiety on the student learning process at SMA Negeri 1 Parepare. This research applied mixed methods research design. The data were collected from the questionnaire and interview. The subjects of this study were second-grade students in science and social students. The questionnaire was conducted on 96 students and the interview was conducted on 9 students. Based on data analysis, it was found that the percentage of the Foreign Language Class Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) questionnaire on internal and external factors of students' speaking anxiety in the learning process was 1 student (1,04%) at a very anxious level and 10 students (10.42%) at the level of anxiety. while the other 59 students (61.46%) were at a mildly level of anxiety. 23 students (23.96%) were at the relaxed level, and 3 students (3.13%) were at the very relaxed level. The results of this study indicate that the average score of students' speaking anxiety as a whole is at a mild level of anxiety, with an average score of 78.43. The impact of speaking anxiety on the student's learning process is due to the low motivation of students to learn in English, lack of vocabulary, lack of knowledge of grammar, lack of pronunciation, never having practiced speaking in English, lack of opportunity to speak in front of crowds, and nervousness. This has a negative impact on students by causing them to be blank, stuttering, afraid, nervous, and anxious.
