Abstract

In this globalization era, people have to communicate globally. English plays a very important role especially in international communication. It is used in various activities like education, business, politics and technology. Consequently, it is taught in Indonesia to provide supplementary knowledge for communication. The importance of learning English cannot be ignored, it is the greatest common language spoken all over the world. In addition, learning English is very important to increase knowledge and language ability. In Indonesia, English has been introduced at kindergarten school, as the development of the world globalization that demand English skill for all people from different nation in the world. Every school has learned English, there is no need to fear but urgent need for wise adaptation and negotiation so that English becomes a powerful tool for gaining tremendous and unlimited knowledge for all kinds of subjects learned at school. Teaching English to young learners is not as easy as imagined, the teachers is not only help the students to get knowledge, competences and morality, but also have to prepare everything’s need. The teachers have to use many strategies in teaching such as applying various strategies, media and game in order to keep students’ interest in learning English. In this research, quantitative research was used that aim to find out teachers’ strategies in teaching English to young learners. The population was all of the teachers at one of kindergartens in Palembang, and the sample was selected through simple random sampling technique. In collecting the data, interview and questionnaire were used, and then the data was analyzed through descriptive method in this research. Based on the result of the research, it was found that there were three teaching and learning strategies used by the teachers in teaching English for young learners

Abstract

This research was conducted to improve speaking achievement of the tenth grade students of SMA N 10 Palembang in academic year of 2017/2018 by using Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) method.The objective of this research was to improve the speaking ability. The method of this research was quasi experimental design. There were 20 students taken as the sample for both experimental and control group, respectively. The speaking test, in pretest and posttest, was used to collect the data. The data of speaking test was then analyzed by using SPSS program. The research findings revealed that holistically there a significant improvement on the students’ speaking achievement who were taught by using TSTS Method. Analytically, there a significant improvement on the students’ speaking aspects achievement who were taught by using TSTS Method where the highest score of speaking aspects in the experimental group were in fluency (0.85)  and pronunciation (0.75). Also, there was a significant mean difference between the students’ speaking achievement who were taught by TSTS method and those who were not.Key words: Two Stay Two Stray, speaking achievement

Abstract

ABSTRACTIn this digital era, the product of technology such as tablet PC, iPad, Smartphone, computer, internet access and electronic book reader are close in our daily life. This article highlights the benefit of using electronic picture story book. Electronic picture story book is one of the tools that can be used in teaching reading for young learners in the literacy activity. It is development of modern education which integrates with technology. Electronic picture story book  can be helpful as a supplement to the language.Young learners have their own perspective in comprehending a message. They have different way to transfer what they have in their mind. By having visualization, young learners will more enthusiastic and interested to read in order to get good stimulation through their imaginations. Electronic picture story book could be considered an aggregation of multi-pages, responsive and lively multi-media (includes information of characters, picture, voice , sounds effects, music, animation, etc). Visual aids in electronic picture story book are helpful for getting the information and mental representation. Electronic picture story book could become innovative and creative as their guide in the literacy activity. Ini adalah pengembangan pendidikan modern yang terintegrasi dengan teknologi. Buku cerita bergambar elektronik dapat membantu sebagai pelengkap bahasa. Pembelajar muda memiliki perspektif mereka sendiri dalam memahami pesan. Mereka memiliki cara berbeda untuk mentransfer apa yang ada dalam pikiran mereka. Dengan memiliki visualisasi, pembelajar muda akan lebih antusias dan tertarik membaca untuk mendapatkan stimulasi yang baik melalui imajinasi mereka. Buku cerita bergambar elektronik dapat dianggap sebagai kumpulan multi-halaman, multi-media yang responsif dan hidup (termasuk informasi karakter, gambar, suara, efek suara, musik, animasi, dll). Bantuan visual dalam buku cerita bergambar elektronik sangat membantu untuk mendapatkan informasi dan representasi mental. Buku cerita bergambar elektronik bisa menjadi sesuatu yang inovatif dan kreatif sebagai panduan mereka dalam kegiatan literasi. Abstract

The objective of the study was to find out whether or not Dictogloss is effective in improving students’ listening achievement to the tenth grade students of SMA N 3 Palembang. The method of the study was quasi – experimental design, non – equivalent control group design. The sample of this study was 40 students which was selected from class X Mipa 2 to be sample. The data were collected by using listening test which consisted of 50 questions. In analyzing the data, paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test were used. Based on the results of statistical analyses, it was found that t-obtained was 8.437, which was 0.05 of the level significance with the degree of freedom (df) 19 with the critical value of  t-table 2.0930. so it can be concluded that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, because t-obtained( -8.437) higher than t-table (2.0930) and significance level P (.000) was lower than α (0.05). it mean that there was significance difference between the tenth grade students of SMA N 3 Palembang who were taught through Dictogloss and those who were not. It also indicated that Dictogloss could improve the students’ listening achievement of tenth grade students of SMA N 3 Palembang. Key words : Improving, listening, and dictogloss.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research was made based used non-equivalent control group design that was conducted University of Indo Global Mandiri Palembang. The aim of this research was to find out the effectiveness of e-learning as teaching media in EFL classroom. In this research, there were two different samples to be judged their writing achievement. First is experimental group which was given a treatment and second is control group which was not given any treatment. As data source, a test in written test was used in this research. Before starting the research, a pre-test was taken from both groups and two raters scored the students’ written tests based on rubric score. After implementing the treatment, both groups were given a post-test and the same raters scored their tests to know the significant improvement and significant difference between the scores of both goups. The results indicated that by using this technique, the students’ writing achievement was improved. It was shown from the mean scores of pre-test in experimental group that increased from 43,30 to be 77,20 in post-test. The significant difference of the post-test scores between both of experimental and control groups could be seen from the results of the t-obtained of both groups. It was considered higher than the t-table. Accordingly, it could be claimed that teaching writing by using e-learning brought about an improvement in students’ writing achievement. This technique was good way to help students learning English.Keywords : improving, e-learningABSTRAKPenelitian ini di buat berdasarkan penelitian desain kelompok control tidak setara yang dilakukan di Universitas Indo Global Mandiri Palembang. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa dengan menerapkan e-learning. Dalam penelitian ini, ada dua sampel yang berbeda untuk dinilai pada kemampuan menulis siswa. Pertama adalah kelompok eksperimen yang diberi perlakuan dan yang kedua kelompok control yang tidak diberi perlakuan. Sebagai sumber data, tes dalam bentuk tertulis digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Sebelum memulai penelitian, pre-test diambil dari kedua kelompok dan dua penilai menilai kemampuan berbicara siswa berdasarkan skor rubrik menulis. Setelah menerapkan pengajaran, kedua kelompok diberi post-test dan penilai yang sama menilai kemmpuan menulis siswa untuk mengetahui peningkatan yang signifikan dan perbedaan yang signifukan antara skor kedua kelompok. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa dengan menggunakan teknik ini, kemampuan menulis siswa meningkat. Hal itu di tunjukkan dari nilai rata-rata pre-test pada kelompok eksperimen yang meningkat dari 43,30 menjadi 77,20 pada saat post-test. Perbedaan yang signifikan pada saat post-test antara kedua kelompok eksperimen dan control dapat dilihat dari hasil t-hitung. Nilai tersebut dianggap lebih tinggi dari t-tabel. dengan demikian, dapat dikatakan bahwa mengajar kemampuan menulis dengan menggunakan e-learning meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa. Teknik ini adalah cara yang baik untuk membantu siswa belajar bahasa inggris.Kata kunci : peningkatan, e-learning

Abstract

This study was entitled “An Analysis of Deixis in Black Swan Movie Script”. The problems of this study were what types of deixis are used in Black Swan Movie Script? and what is the dominant deixis used in Black Swan Movie Script? The objectives of this study were to find the types of deixis and to find the dominant of deixis in Black Swan Movie Script. This study only focused on movie script. This study was purposed to find out the types and the dominant of deixis are used in Black Swan Movie Script. This script got from internet. The study applied descriptive qualitative method. The following steps, it applied was the first, this study looked for the movie, the second, this study watched the movie, then, looked for the movie script of the movie “Black Swan”, the fourth, this study identified the sentence of the movie script based on four types of deixis. From the analysis, it is found that there are four types; personal deixis, spatial deixis, temporal deixis, and discourse deixis and the most dominant deixis used in Black Swan Movie Script is personal deixisKeyword : deixis, Black Swan, and Movie Script

Abstract

This study was aimed to observe the use of Theme-Based Teaching with short story, and to find out the obstacles, advantages and disadvantages of theme based teaching using short story and narrative text. This study was conducted by using a quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttest. The population of this study consisted of 259 tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang in Academic Year of 2016/2017. There were 40 students taken as sample. Each group consisted of 20 students as experimental group and 20 students from class as control group. The sample of this study was taken by using purposive sampling method.  In this study, the researcher used pretest-posttest non-equivalent group design. The instrument used in collecting the data was oral test in the form of presentation. The test was administrated twice as the pretest and posttest for both experimental and control group. The results of the test were analyzed by using IBM SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science) Statistics 21. The result showed that “there was means significant difference from students posttest score in experimental and control group, it was found the p-ouput (Sig.2-tailed) was lower than 0.05 level and t-obtained (9.823) is higher than t-table (2.024). So, the Ho (the null hypothesis) was rejected and Ha (the alternative hypothesis) was accepted. It means that there was significant difference on students’ reading comprehension achievement taught using Theme-Based Teaching than students who were taught by using teacher’s strategy. The findings of this study suggested that Theme based teaching  was effective in improving students’ reading comprehension on narrative text as indicated by a statistically higher reading score of experimental group students.Key word : theme-based teaching, reading achievement

Abstract

Two main types of educational technology tools (ICT and DERs) are likely mediate and enhance reading motivation as well as reading comprehension through personalized activities and engaging activities. Though, technology provides students with various interactive features that can suit students’ learning style and learning level, framework and approaches like constructionist framework, top-down and bottom-up approaches, as well as learning from technology and learning with technology concepts will navigate learning activities on what ways and how the technologies are used in reading activities, thus improve students’ reading motivation, reading comprehension, and reading fluency. Reading motivation questionnaire alone might give insight to the researchers on the change of reading motivation before and after the intervention, but triangulating the data from questionnaire with the data from interview, observation, and students diary likely expands the information gauged in terms of students’ problems and difficulties in using the technologies, their preference regarding learning activities, and how the technologies with the approaches/concepts/approach can enhance learning, increase students’ reading motivation, comprehension, and fluency.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find outthe types of semiotic signs, the verbal and visual meanings of these signs, and the relationship among verbal and visual signs used in weight loss product ads. Qualitative method with descriptive approach was used in this study. 10 weight loss product ads were used in this study. There are icons, indexes, and symbols found in this study. There are 10 icons (100%), 7 indexes (70%), and 4 symbols (40%). Peirce’s theory was used in finding the types of semiotics in this study, and Saussure’s theory was used in finding the verbal and visual meanings as well as its relationship among them. The result of the study shows that the verbal and visual signs are used to create clear meanings and both of them have strong relationship in delivering messages of the products.Key words : Semiotic, Weight Loss Product Advertisements, and Verbal and Visual Signs.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis article describes about the concept of children’s literature, the genre and the role of children’s literature in teaching English as a foreign language. In Indonesia, English as a foreign language because Indonesian use Bahasa Indonesia for communication.Children’s literature is a kind of literary texts such as picture story books, fable, novel, short stories etc in order to make students interested in reading especially for English as a foreign language. Sometimes they feel bored and lazy to learn English because they think  that it is a  difficult subject therefore, English teacher in Indonesia usually teaches the students with language combination between Indonesia and English in teaching and learning  pocess in order to make their students understand what they learn. Not only that, teachers always use textbook as material in teaching and learning process without introducing  new material like literature text and usually the use of teacher-centered strategy in classroom without involving students. One  solution  for solving this problem is introducing literature in teaching and learning process. Motivating students to learn English Literature is one of the best approach for teacher in teaching of English language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) because it can make students enhance their knowledge from story that they read in literary text.Keywords : Childrens’ literature, genre and role of children’s literatureABSTRAKArtikel ini akan menjelaskan tentang konsep sastra anak-anak, macam-macam dan peran sastra terhadap anak-anak dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing.Di Indonesia, Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing karena orang Indonesia menggunakan bahasa Indonesia untuk berkomunikasi.Sastra anak-anak adalah jenis teks sastra seperti buku cerita bergambar, dongeng, novel, cerita pendek dll supaya siswa tertarik membaca terutama untuk bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Terkadang mereka merasa bosan dan malas belajar bahasa Inggris karena mereka pikir itu adalah pelajaran yang sulit oleh karena itu guru pelajaran bahasa Inggris di Indonesia biasanya mengajar siswa dengan menggunakan bahasa campuran antara bahasa Indonesia dan bahsa Inggris di proses belajar mengajar supaya siswa mengerti apa yang mereka pelajari. Tidak hanya itu, guru selalu menggunakan buku paket sebagai bahan ajar di proses belajar mengajar tanpa mengenalkan bahan ajar baru seperti teks sastra dan biasanya menggunakan strategi yang berpusat pada guru tanpa melibatkan siswa. Salah satu solusi untuk mengatasi masalah ini adalah memperkenalkan sastra dalam proses belajar mengajar. Memotivasi siswa untuk belajar Sastra Inggris adalah salah satu pendekatan terbaik untuk guru dalam mengajar keterampilan bahasa Inggris (membaca, menulis, berbicara dan mendengarkan) karena itu dapat membuat siswa meningkatkan pengetahuan mereka dari cerita yang mereka baca dalam teks sastra.Kata kunci : Sastra Anak- anak, macam sastra dan peran sastra anak- anak
