Abstract

Backgrounds: Severe class II skeletal malocclusion could cause unfavorable facial appearance and impairments of mastication, swallowing, speaking, and breathing functions. Mouth breathing is one of the etiologies of malocclusion, caused by the narrowing of upper pharyngeal width. The aim of this study is to determine the upper pharyngeal width of class I and class II skeletal malocclusion. Materials and Methods: This study is an analytic observational method with cross sectional study design. Cephalogram samples are taken from patients of Trisakti University Dental Hospital in 2016-2017. The analysis is performed by measuring angles of SNA, SNB, ANB (class I, ANB: 2-4° and class II, ANB>4°), and upper pharyngeal width according to McNamara Analysis. Results: Average SNA angle is 8,40° (± 3,91), average SNB angle is 75,82° (± 3,62), average ANB angle is 4,58° (± 1,55), average upper pharyngeal width is 9,24 mm (± 2,20), average upper pharyngeal width of class I skeletal malocclusion group is 9,47 mm (± 2,37), and average upper pharyngeal width of class II skeletal malocclusion group is 9,01 mm (± 2,04). Conclusion: Average upper pharyngeal width of class I skeletal malocclusion is 9,47 mm (± 2,37) and average upper pharyngeal width of class II skeletal malocclusion is 9,01 mm (± 2,04).

Abstract

Background: Periodontal disease could mediate the systemic effect through the action of periodontal pathogens and lipopolisacharide that  increase postaglandin and cytokine production, which will trigger the delivery of preterm low birth weight. Pregnant woman with periodontitis have significantly higher risk to deliver preterm low birth weight infants <37 weeks gestation period, and birth weight < 2500 gram. Periodontal therapy significantly reduces the rates of preterm low birth weight among women with periodontitis. Conclusions: It is concluded that periodontal disease as an independent risk factor for preterm low birth weight. Plaque control procedure during pregnancy should be considered to reduce the occurrence of preterm.

Abstract

Background: Bulk-fill composite resin is a tooth-colored restoration material that is developed to obtain better aesthetic and mechanical properties, which include compressive strength. The factors influencing the reduction of compressive strength of composite resin are hydrophilic matrix monomers and inadequate bonds between compositions. One of the absorbable liquids is a mouthwash commonly used to control dental caries and reduce the amount of plaque after brushing the teeth. Objective: To determine the effect of mouthwash containing 9% alcohol and nonalcohol on the compressive strength of bulk-fill composite resin. Method: The research type conducted is an experimental laboratory. The compressive strength of bulk-fill composite resin will be tested using Universal Testing Machine. There were three treatment groups, which are immersion in mouthwash containing 9% alcohol, nonalcohol, and artificial saliva as a control group. Samples were immersed at room temperature 25°C for 12 hours according to instructions for use twice a day for 30 seconds. Results: The One Way ANOVA test shows a significant value, which was sig. 0.001 (p < 0.05). There were significant differences in the test of the effect of mouthwash containing 9% alcohol and nonalcohol mouthwash on the compressive strength of bulk-fill composite resin. This result is caused by the hydrophilic traits of the matrix monomers, mechanisms that occur in resin compositions, acidity and alcohol content of mouthwash can affect the reduction in compressive strength of the composite resin. Conclusion: The mouthwash containing 9% alcohol reduced the compressive strength of bulk-fill composite resin more compared to nonalcohol mouthwash.

Abstract

Background: Restoration after endodontic treatment is still a challenge that must be performed by doctors in daily practice. The gold standard treatment for this case is post-core crown. However, this aggressive preparation for post-core crown does not in line with the minimally invasive concept in modern dentistry. Objective: To restore the function and aesthetic of maxillary first molars after endodontic treatment using Endocrown. Case: A 54-year-old male patient came to the clinic with a broken amalgam restoration on the first right upper molar since 3 months ago. The restoration was felt sharp thus iritate the tongue. On clinical and radiographic examination, an old amalgam restoration was seen on the occlusal surface and had reached the pulp. At the first visit, one visit endodontic was done with warm vertical condensation technique. Gutta-percha masterpoint was cut until ⅓ apical was filled and at ⅓ middle and ⅓ coronal the root canal was filled with injectable thermoplastized gutta-percha which is compacted until 2 mm below the orifice. On the next visit, gutta percha was cut as much as 2 mm and filled with core material as intraradicular retention as deep as 4 mm. Preparation is made by the butt-joint equigingival margin around the surface with a retention cavity in the middle of the pulp chamber. After the completion of tooth preparation, the impression was made with polyvinyl siloxane silicone. At the third visit, endocrown was tested to check the marginal fit and accuracy, then cemented using resin cement, and checked using radiography. Conclusion: Endocrown can serve as an alternative restoration which is conservative, have good aesthetic, functional, and minimally invasive.
