Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Periodontal disease is a form of inflammation in the periodontal tissue commonly caused by bacteria. Periodontal disease consists of gingivitis and periodontitis. The clinical signs appears in gingivitis only occurs in the gingiva. The prevalence of periodontal disease in Indonesia in 2018 reached a number of 37,057%. Gingivitis can be occur to psychiatric disosder patient such as schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder experienced by someone depicting the discordance or disharmony in the process of thinking, feeling, and doing. Normal individuals can easily learn the proper way to brush the teeth in order to wipe the plaque effectively. While, the brushing teeth education for schizophrenic patients is much harder to be accepted correctly. Objective:  To identify the frequency distribution of gingivitis lesions in schizophrenic patients at the Regional Psychiatric Hospital Semarang. Method: The descriptive observational research was conducted by looking at the secondary data which was a medical record of schizophrenic patients experiencing dental treatment in the dental polyclinics during 2015-2019. Results:  The undergoing dental treatment of schizophrenic patients were as many as 100 medical records. Gingivitis in schizophrenic patients are found 41% in most people ranged from 26 to 35 years old and 36 to 45 years old (63.42%). Based on gender, there are more men suffering from gingivitis lesions than women. Conclusion: A study shows that schizophrenia patients suffering gingivitis comes in a relatively high of number (41%).

Abstract

The main muscle that forms a smile is the m.zygomaticus major, which pulls the corners of the mouth to the superior and lateral. The m.zygomaticus major area is related to one's appearance, both when active or inactive. Smiles are fundamentally divided into “spontaneous” or “true” smiles ("Duchenne" smiles) and “fake” smiles or “social” smiles ("non-Duchenne" smiles). In "Duchenne" smile there is an additional contraction of the orbicularis oculi muscle so that the cheeks are raised and form wrinkles around the eyes. The contraction of orbicularis oculi muscle is very difficult to do voluntarily. Clinical smile analysis can be in the form of facial palpation by observing anatomical superficial landmarks of the face. Anthropometric measurements in smile analysis are recommended using standardized photographs with 8 main components of assessment: lip line, smile arch, upper lip curvature, buccal corridors, smile symmetry, occlusal frontal plane, dental components and gingival components. The purpose of this paper is to examine smiles in an anatomical and anthropometric perspective.

Abstract

Referred pain on the orofacial structures can be diagnostically challenging for the dentists. Dental pain, which is the most common pain in the orofacial structures, is commonly  resolved with satisfactory result, However, some dental pain can have a non-odontogenic characteristics which originate from myocardial ischemia. Myocardial ischemia symptoms may be presented as angina pectoris specific pain, but also as trigeminal pain, with or without angina pectoris symptoms. When this occurred, an improper diagnostic can lead to unnecessary dental treatment and delayed of myocardial ischemia treatment which can lead to myocardium infarct.

Abstract

Background: Orthodontic Treatment aims to correct occlusion functional and  aesthetics as well as achieving  the health of supporting structure. Orthodontists frequently treat patients with periodontal problems both from aesthetic considerations as discrepancy gingival margin and functional considerations due to periodontal disease.  Review: The relationship between orthodontics and periodontics is very important in establishing the diagnosis and treatment plan, and this relationship often resembles   symbiosis. In many cases periodontal health can be improved with orthodontic movements, and orthodontic tooth movement is often facilitated by periodontal therapy.  But on the other hand orthodontic treatment can also cause periodontal problems such as gingival inflammation, recession, bone dehiscence.  Conclusion: This paper summarizes the literature to provide a basic understanding of interrelationship between periodontics and orthodontics for optimized treatment outcomes.
