Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing the students’ anxiety in speaking English. This research was designed in qualitative research with descriptive approach. The data of this research was gathered through observation, and interview. The procedures used during analyzing the data were reading/memoing, describing, classifying. The result of this research showed that the anxiety experienced by eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Dharma Caraka Telukdalam were communication apprehension, test anxiety and fear of negative evaluation. The students’ anxieties were caused by four internal factors and five external factor. The internal factors were lack of confidence, shyness, lacks of motivation and fear of making mistake. The external factors were lack of preparation, limited vocabulary, grammatical error, friends/ classmate and embarrassment. Therefore, it can be concluded that anxiety and factors caused it influenced students’ ability in speaking English. It is suggested to English teacher to apply interesting methods to teach English speaking skill for students to avoid students’ anxiety in speaking English, and the teacher should create comfortable speaking class situation so that students can follow the speaking learning process.

Abstract

Denotative meaning is the original meaning or a true meaning possessed by a lexeme. Connotation is related to value of the sense of people who use language, whether they fell happy, sad, repugnant and angry. The purposes of this research were to identify the types of connotative meaning in Kid laroi song lyrics and describe the meaning of denotative and connotative meaning in Kid laroi song lyric. The method of the research was qualitative descriptive method. The data was obtained from song lyrics of Kid laroy song lyrics. The data was collected by downloading Kid laroy selected songs, listening all of Kid laroy songs, finding the words, phrases or sentences which consists of denotative and connotative meanings, then analyzing the words, phrases and sentences which found out. The data was analyzed based on Miles et al theory. From the result, researcher found three types, they are (1) Positive Connotative 8 data in ten lyrics of kid laroi song (2) negative connotative 14 data in ten lyrics of kid laroy song. (3) Neutral connotative 1 data in ten lyrics of kid laroi song. Based on the result, it is concluded that, the researcher got are 23 connotative meaning, and 15 dennotative meaning there could be found is Kid Laroi album. Based on the conclusion, the researcher would give contribution for the college students especially at English department, than, lyrics of Kid laroi can be used as a material college students to broaden and develop their knowladge about denotative and connotative meaning and both of the types connotative meaning in the song lyrics. And also for the readers or the next researcher, the researcher suggested that, this research can be used as a conception and reference in conducting research related to denotative and connotative meaning.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding and describing types of questioning strategies used by English teacher. This research was designed by using qualitative descriptive method. The instruments of data collection were observation and interview. After analyzing the data, researcher found that the questioning strategies were used by English teacher during classroom interaction. The questioning strategies used were: (1) procedural question, (2) convergent question, (3) divergent question. Furthermore, the purposes English teacher used questioning strategies were: (1) to make sure that the students were in good health and the students’ readiness before starting the lesson, (2) to attract students’ concentration, (3) as effort to achieve the learning objectives, (4) as the stimulus to think critically (5) as the effort to provide opportunities to express the ideas. Therefore, researcher concluded that questioning strategies used by English teacher was to know how far students understood about the material and to make sure whether the learning objectives have been achieved or not. Furthermore, the researcher suggests that English teacher could use questioning strategies to elicit students’ response during teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Tionghoa people in Medan are the Chinese who has already lived in Medan even in Sumatera in many years ago. All of the Tionghoa ancestors became a part of Indonesia and gave great contributions for Indonesia for ages. One of their contribution is to produce the Chinese culinary in one street in Medan. The purpose of the research is 1) to describe how the Pau sellerto maintain the Mandarin language and 2) to describe why the Pau sellers still maintain the Mandarin language. This research is the qualitative research. The researchers used the observation and interview to collect the data. The result of this research, the Pau sellers used many ways to maintain the mandarin language in their shops are 1) they use Mandarin Language to name their shops that is Siu Hua Kue Pau and under of that name they put the Mandarin Language 2) They also make the list of Pau by giving the kinds of Pau and also using the Mandarin Language.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to develop DAR (Descriptive, Announcement, and Recount Text) Application Based Android in Reading English Text for Senior High Students in grade X. The researcher used Research and Development (R&D) method and adapted ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) models. Based on the resulting development the researcher got a result of media validation 95,8% scores, which was the “very good” category. In the material validation, the researcher got 92,1% scores, which was a “very good category”, and in the result of product implementation, the researcher got 92,1% scores, which was a “very good” category. From those data, it can be concluded that DAR Application was feasible as a learning media in teaching-learning English.

Abstract

In the world of technology, education is very important in English learning media. In this case, many students have difficulty understanding English learning, especially in pronunciation. Therefore, the author makes an English learning application media to help students pronounce English properly and correctly. At this stage, the author uses the R&D (research and development) method by adapting ADDIE (analyze, design, develop, implement, evaluate) in this development the authors get 91,6% data results in media validation which can be characterized as very good. In the results of the validation of the material, the author gets 75% data results which are categorized as good. In addition, at the implementation stage, the responses from students received 78,1% of data which can be characterized as good. From the whole data, it can be said that this ENTION (English in Action Application) is possible to use as a learning media at Islamic Senior High School At-Taufiq Bogem, Diwek.

Abstract

Code switching as one of the language events that often occurs in social interactions between speakers and interlocutors due to the ability of language users as bilinguals or multilingual. This research aimed to describe and to explain the types and the reasons of code switching occurrence between local people in Botohili Sorake Village and international tourists in Sorake Beach. The participants of this research were the international tourists (foreign tourist) in Sorake Beach. This research was conducted by utilized qualitative method with descriptive approach. The instruments applied in collecting data were the observation and interview. The data acquired were analyzed by using Miles and Huberman’s mode: 1) data condensation, 2) data displayed, and 3) conclusion drawing/verification. The results of this study indicate that the types of code switching used by international tourists (foreign tourist) in their interaction to local people in Sorake Beach, Botohili Sorake Village, Luahagundre District were: a) Inter-sentential Code Switching, b) Intra-sentential Code Switching. Thus, based on the results found, it can be concluded that the code switching in an interaction is very helpful for language users, both speakers and interlocutors in understanding and conveying messages or information. This study also reveals several reasons for the use of code switching in an interaction, none other than to avoid misunderstanding the meaning of language between the speakers and interlocutors and as an advantage, especially for bilingual. Briefly, it can be stated that code switching has an important role in a communication. However, although the presence and role of code switching is quite important in language, the researcher also suggests to language users to increase the ability to use language as communication tool, both in their own language and in other language.

Abstract

Language is the most important tool for human to share knowledge and idea. The way people used language to covey messages and idea in certain society is studied in pragmatics. sometimes, people do not only convey messages by using utterance, instead they use utterances to make someone perform action which is called illocutionary act. The aims of this research were to find out the classification of illocutionary act in A Box of Hope Movie and the meaning of each sentence that has been classified in illocutionary act. The researcher focused on analyzing illocutionary act based in Searle’s five category of illocutionary act; representatives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declarations. This research was designed in descriptive qualitative research which focused on the analysis of Illocutionary act. The result showed that there are five types of illocutionary act found in A Box of Hope Movie. The total of illocutionary found in the movie is 233 utterances, 57 representatives, 74 directives, 52 commissives, and only 2 declarations. The meaning of illocutionary act found in the movie often leads to perform an action and sometimes does not always correspond to the literal meaning. It can be concluded that all the types of Searle’s five category of illocutionary act were found in A Box of Hope Movie and the meaning of each illocutionary act can be interpreted based on the listener interpretation toward the utterance.

Abstract

This research was aimed to analyze the types of directive language function in Before I Fall Movie Script and describe the meanings of directive language function in Before I Fall movie script. This research designed by using qualitative research with descriptive qualitative approach. The data was obtained from movie script of Before I Fall. The data was collected by downloading Before I Fall movie script, finding the words, phrases or sentences which consist of directive language function, the analyze it which found out. In analyzing the data, the researcher used theory of Miles, Huberman, & Saldaria (2014:31-33). To examine the credibility of this study the researcher used triangulation such as data triangulation, investigator triangulation and theory triangulation. Based on the result, the researcher found three of the types of directive languages function, they are 25 commands, 19 requests, 11 suggestion. It can be concluded that the dominant directive used in “Before I Fall” movie script is commands are 25. Based on the conclusions, the research would give contribution for the college students especially at English Department, that script of Before I Fall movie can be used as a material college students to broaden and develop their knowledge about directive language function and three of the types directive language function in Before I Fall movie script. And also for the readers or for the next researcher, the researcher suggested this research can be used as a conception and reference in conducting research related to directive language function.

Abstract

Pronunciation is the fundamental aspect in building a communication so that everyone can convey the message or ideas to other people clearly, correctly, and orally. Pronunciation will be a problem if the people who pronounced the words not as the correct pronunciation so that, will be effected on listener or hearer comments or reaction. This research was aimed to identifying students difficulties and the causes of students difficulties in pronouncing English vocabulary at the tenth grade of SMTK Mo’ale. This research designed by using qualitative method. The instruments of data collection were interviewed and documentation by video record. The technique of data analysis were data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing verification. After analyzing the data, researcher found that students have difficulty in pronunciation such as consonants sounds[ʤ,θ, t∫, ∫, v, c], and vowel sounds[ə-ɑ, ɔ, e-I,ʌ], difficulty in pronouncing close consonant sounds , difficulty in pronouncing all the suffixes tion “∫”, and changes letter into other pronunciation. The causes of students difficulties were (1) Lack of confidence (2) Lack of practice (3) The influence of Indonesian language (4) Difference in spelling, pronunciation, and the meaning (5) Lack of vocabulary. Therefore, the researcher concluded that Identifying Sudents’ Difficulties In Pronouncing English Vocabulary was necessary because it can be primary attention in teaching learning process after knowing the difficulty and the cause of students difficulty. It is suggested that research for all the English teachers, students, and next researcher, hopefully can be used as consideration and refereces to make students can pronounced the word correctly.
