Abstract

This type of research is descriptive qualitative which aims to determine the influence of parents’ involvement to students achievement in English learning at SMPN 9 Pinrang. Data acquisition by conducting interviews with parents by asking eight questions. In this study, the research subjects were parents of eight class at SMPN 9 Pinrang whose samples was used a purposive sampling technique with the characteristics of the informants parents’ educational background, type of parents’ job, and number of family members. This study was shown by four components of the influence of parents’ involvement, namely: (1) parents as caregivers and educators (2) parents as advisors (3) parents as motivators (4) parents as facilitators.The results of this study the researcher found the influence of parents’ involvement on student achievement, namely parents as educators and caregivers, parents as advisors, parents as motivators and parents as facilitators. By conducting interviews with parents of students and seeing the value of knowledge and values ​​of students' attitudes in English learning.

Abstract

This research deals with a reading focused on analysis of the students competence in predicting pictures on reading descriptive text particularly in describe the object. The level of students analyzed is the XI Grade at SMA Negeri 1 Barru.This research used a descriptive quantitative method. The population of this research was  grade XI of the students that consist of 340 students at SMA Negeri 1 Barru. The sample of this research used purposive sampling was XI MIA 2 that consisted of 30 students. The instrument used in this research was picture and essay test.The result of this research was the competence in predicting pictures was very good. From 27 students or 90% got very good level. The second is good level, there were 2 students or 7% got good level. The third is low level, there were 1 students or 3% got low level. As well as their reading comprehension of the text with mean score 80.33. It can be conclude that the result of this research was appropriate with the theory which stated that pictures was useful for getting students to predict what is coming next in a lesson. It is also help the students can look at the picture and try to guess what it shows.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the errors students in intonation and in stressing the word in sentences. This is descriptive qualitative research. Student audio transcripts and an Oxford dictionary were used to process the data. Participants in this study were students of SMAN 4 Jeneponto X IPA 2 semester 2, totaling 15 people who were selected by random sampling technique. A pronunciation test or oral test was used as the primary research instrument, with recordings as a secondary instrument.The results showed that there were 2 errors in intonation made by students of class X IPA 2 semester 2 SMAN 4 Jeneponto, namely rising intonation and falling intonation errors. Then there is an error in stressing the word in the sentence, which lies in the verbs and adjectives. It can be concluded that the errors made by students are caused by a lack of knowledge and awareness of students in terms of pronunciation, especially suprasegmental sounds.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the improvement of students’ speaking fluency skill by using Assessment-for-learning approach. The sample of the research was the fourth semester students from UNISMUH MAKASSAR which consisted of 20 students. The sample was taken by using purposive sampling. The research findings showed that the fourth semester students of UNISMUH MAKASSAR had quite low score in pre-test. After treatment, their speaking skill was significantly improved. The result of the research was the mean score of speaking fluency obtained by the students pre-test was 44.75 and post-test was 70.25 with the significant score of the t-test is (0.00) or <(0.05). It means that there was significance difference between before and after giving the treatment. It indicated that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It was concluded that the use Assessment-for-learning approach is effective in improving the students’ speaking fluency. Assessment-for-learning approach was one of the approach that can be considered in teaching English in order to help improved the students’ speaking fluency skill.

Abstract

The aimed of this research was to find out the strategies of male and female students in learning speaking skills during the post pandemic. The method used in this research was qualitative method in the type of phenomenological research. This research used a semi-structure interview as instrument to collect the data. The subjects in this research were 4th semester students of English Education Department, at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. The research subjects were 10 students which consist of 5 female students and 5 male students. This research used purposive sampling technique. The results of this research showed that male and female students used all types of strategies; memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies, and social strategies in learning speaking during the post-pandemic. The difference only lays the number of male and female students in using the methods of each group strategies and the difference in the method used in the group strategies by male and female students. Female students used each group learning strategies more than male students. Most of female students used memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, metacognitive strategies and social strategies. While most of male students used memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies and metacognitive strategies.

Abstract

 This study aims to improve the students pronunciation using English Language Speech Assistant (ELSA) application. this research used pre-experimental research by quantitative method. There were 36 students of SMA Negeri 9 Makassar involved in this research. the test was pronounce word which consist of 40 words for pre-test and post-test.The findings of the study indicated that the English Language Speech Assistant (ELSA) application is significant in improving students' pronunciation. This was proven by the average score pre-test before treatment was 51.94 and the average score after Treatment has given was 63.47, the percentage of the improvement was 22.19%. This means that there is improvement of students' pronunciation.
